The son of a transplant recipient who was implanted with a genetically modified pig heart in a first-of-its-kind surgery called his father's procedure "a miracle."

Key points:There are hopes pig organs can help alleviate shortages of donor organsPrevious pig-to-human transplants have failedThe son of pig-heart recipient says his dad is "certainly changing the future"

The surgery, performed by a team at the University of Maryland Medicine on January 7, is among the first to demonstrate the feasibility of a pig-to-human heart transplant, a field made possible by new gene editing tools.

If proven successful, scientists hope pig organs could help alleviate shortages of donor organs.

For David Bennett, 57, of Maryland, the heart transplant was his last option.

"This is significant for my dad, for the United States, for the world," said David Bennett Jr, the patient's son.

David Bennett was aware that the operation had no guarantees of success.(AP: Dr Bartley Griffith/University of Maryland School)

"This is groundbreaking, this is remarkable and frankly, this is a miracle."

"I myself have some heart issues at 37 years old so my dad is certainly changing the future for even myself."

On the morning of the surgery, the transplant team removed the pig's heart and placed it into a special device to preserve its function until the surgery.

"He was in the operating room three days straight. He's got a lot of swelling throughout his body, and so he's suffering a great deal.

"This healing is going to be a process and so again, the first words out of his mouth were, 'I can't take this' but I know how strong my dad is."

Pigs have long been a tantalising source of potential transplants because their organs are so similar to humans.

Prior efforts at pig-to-human transplants have failed because of genetic differences that caused organ rejection or viruses that posed an infection risk.

If you guys needed a heart transplant, would you feel ok with a pigs heart?

I wouldn't care. You can rationalise it with 'do you want to live or die?'

It's genetically modified.  Maybe they removed the non halal gene.

It may or not be Halal, but the leader of the scientific team who developed it is Dr Muhammad Mohiuddin - a practising Muslim.

Pig heart valves have been used in human heart surgeries for many years.

Not necessarily.

So I may be talking out my ass here (drink 'n' weed does that), but as I understand it, it may be along the same lines as Judaism.

Under halakha, when something lo kasher (non kosher) is processed such that it becomes unfit for human consumption, then it can be considered as kasher.  Pork products are lo kasher for food, but pigskin leather is generally acceptable for things such as shoes (though would still be unacceptable for liturgical use, such as for a sefer.)

I believe, but may be wrong, that it is similar in Islam.  Pigskin shoes are accepted, but would probably be removed for prayer.

Also, under Jewish law pikuach nefesh (sanctity of life) would take precidence.  Any Jewish law (except murder, incest or idolatry, but specifically including kasher laws) can be set aside in the preservation of life, so a Jew shouldn't have a problem if it were considered a medical necessity.

I would have to defer to a Muslim for the Islamic understanding of this though.

Technically, a blood dripping pork chop could be considered halal if all the Muslim does is 'bless' the food prior to eating it. Similar in the way Christians say 'grace' before eating

In practice, it doesn't quite work. There was a f7asco where the 'DNA' of a pig was found contaminated in Cadbury chocolate. A lot if Muslims went apeshit, called for death, claimed there was a conspiracy to 'weaken' the Muslims or other such nonsense.

Muslims seem to be indoctrinated to have Swinophobia. If an Imam pronounced to his congregation he had a pigs heart transplant - even if it was blessed and was his only chance to live - who thinks his congregation would look at him the same way again?

Well, that's that.

https://www.news.com.au/breaking-news/first-pig-heart-transplant-patient-dies-after-two-months/news-story/9e790714ea057155894e654e50f2f4bc
Quote
The first person to receive a heart transplant from a genetically modified pig has died two months after the medical milestone, the hospital that carried out the surgery said Wednesday.

The procedure raised hopes that advances in cross-species organ donation could one day solve the chronic shortage of human organs available for donation, and the team behind the operation say they are "optimistic" about its future success.

"His condition began deteriorating several days ago. After it became clear that he would not recover, he was given compassionate palliative care. He was able to communicate with his family during his final hours," the statement said.

Bennett was able to spend time with family, participated in physical therapy, watched the Super Bowl and spoke often about wanting to go home to see his dog Lucky.

Bennett came to the hospital in the eastern US state of Maryland in October 2021.

"We have gained invaluable insights learning that the genetically modified pig heart can function well within the human body while the immune system is adequately suppressed," said Muhammad Mohiuddin, director of the university's cardiac xenotransplantation program.
