Well, as an admin, you can do a whois, which is simply something that resolves an IP address to a physical location,

A whois does not do this.  A whois determines what party owns a given domain name, and is not specfically related to IP address or geographical locations (though the whois report for a domain's owner usually contains the billing address as well).

Quote
and a traceroute lets you see the different hops it takes to get to his IP, and can sometimes give you much more specific data. Like an address and such.

A traceroute helps you build a logical map of the network -- what computers are connected to what others -- not a geographical one.  A traceroute will never give you a street address.

Just Gimme his IP then, I might be able to get it for you.

I dunno if the Whois site that phpBB links to still does what they used to do, but they used to give a lot of specific info.

Good, cuz /b/ sucks lately. Without the CP/loli jokes and shit, it's really boring anymore.

/s/ is still good though.

Wow, you proved me right. I knew you guys would try to do something creepy like that, so I just used my house. And did anybody else notice the "my car" was actually a truck? Man, internets people.

Besides, I go to Mountain Pointe.

What, so now you are going to backtrack?

By the way, the pictures can very easily come from aircraft, and very often do.

I'm not a flat earther, but Google gets a LOT of its imagery from aircraft. Little of it is satellite imagery.

Nice try though.

A forum search would have saved you all that trouble

Quote from: "teekay"
Certainly, but I doubt it could be done using only planes. For example, don't you think Kim Jong-il would be a little unhappy about American planes flying all over North Korea?

I posted this in the other thread about Google Earth, and no one responded. Unless you're going to revert to some crap about Kim Jong-il being "part of the conspiracy", I don't see how Google could get around this other than by using satellites.

I just tried to get some good shots in Google Earth, most of the country is obscure, except for the capital city (oddly enough). Wouldn't the obscurity mean they were taken from a satellite? Surely, if it was a plane, it would be clearer, no?

Please link me to the other thread you posted this in.

So you think, what, that airplanes can't take detailed photographs?

They do, but they really can't account for all the images.

Look at North Korea. You'll notice it's blurry. Why? Well, considering that North Korea is well... backwards.. I'm not entirely sure if they let planes fly overhead. A satellite could be to blame for the bad image quality. Cuz if I was North Korea, in the state they are in now, I'd have shot down the stratellites.

That's my point.  The pictures of the US and numerous other countries are all very clear.  Yet, the pictures of NK are not.  Why would a satellite suddenly not be able to take a detailed picture just because of the nation it's flying over?

They can barely get an IRBM off the launch pad.

Mountain range? There are sections of the US that are not clear. It seems that when I try to focus in on a part of the earth that has a lot of vivid topography, it seems to be a shitty image.

Maybe atmospheric conditions also plagued the images. But I think that a stratellite or a plane would have gotten better shots anyway.
