Are the other planets spheres ?
« on: October 10, 2021, 06:21:16 AM »
Hello !
If the Earth is flat, what about the other planets of the solar system ? When you look through a telescope, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn appear round. Are they just disks facing us ? But we can even see the wind going around these planets, and disappearing as if they were going behind them. How can we include them in a flat earth theory ? What are they ?

How much detail can you see through your telescope on Jupiter?  I use a 10" telescope among others and all the cloud and band details you see constantly changing the appearance of the fine detail of Jupiters disk is caused by wind currents.

Also by observing the red spot on Jupiter it is very clear to see the spherical shape of Jupiter.

Depends on what angle you are looking at, doesn't it.

Depends more on how much experience you have in observing or imaging planets through telescopes I would have thought. In my case over 20 years worth using some pretty decent kit. In your case John I haven't a clue obviously.  All I can say is that they look pretty spherical to me.

A sphere looks spherical regardless of what angle you are looking.  Otherwise it wouldn't really be a sphere would it.

At what angle can you look at a plate and it completely look like a sphere that's rotating?

Back in the 1980's or whatever I could have understood the doubt or confusion. But now in the 2020s have you seen the quality of the planetary images that amateur astronomers can achieve.

Mine are pretty good but they are no match for the best out there. But one thing is for sure. There is no doubt whatsoever that other planets are spheres.

You are aware that if someone doubts that other planets are spheres
then there is doubt that other planets are spheres right?

What would be the reasons in this day and age for that someone to find reason to doubt that planets are spheres? It's not as if we are still reliant on NASA to show us clear images of planets any more is it. Any amateur astronomer (and there are many of them) can now take images of planets now which clearly show they are spheres. I guess that someone is simply not in tune with what developments have taken place in amateur astronomy over the last few decades.

Finding doubt where doubt is justified is one thing. But finding doubt when there really isn't any reason to is another.

Not if you use some context.  That clearly refers to the scientific community or the body of human knowledge.  It doesn't need all 7 billion people to be in absolute agreement.

If some random crack head stands on a street corner yelling "mars is a cube" it doesn't mean you'll turn on the news later to find the announcer saying:  "Doubts were expressed today on the shape of the planet mars.  More on this breaking story later as we interview LA resident George Dobbs from his cardboard box under a bridge".

"Neil deGrasse Tyson, when asked for statement, said 'This has really shaken things up.  Before we had no doubt the other planets were also spheres, now it's all up in the air.' " .

. . . well, if you put it that way

Some of those crack heads have even been seen standing on street corners yelling about and insisting that the Earth is flat.... that is after all where you are most likely to see a flat Earth believer in this day and age.

I've checked TED.com and I can't see any references to flat Earth speakers. John/Sceptimatic?

Quite a few of them, as it turns out.

For a flat plate I can only find 2, and only if it is rotating about its axis, which produces a fundamentally different view.

Care to enlighten us with these "quite a few"?

I think it all depends how much booze has passed your lips. Tell you what John go take some pics at all those angles you claim that flat discs look like spheres and post them. As your pal says 'evidence is all' so how about providing some. It might make a good chapter for the book.
Really…..what a laugh!!!

Spheres seem to be uninhabitable shapes while life seems to thrive on flat surfaces.

I think there's a little bit more as to how life thrives than just the shape of something.

Life cares very little about the shape of the surface.
Plenty of shapes are observed to have life.

It depends on your reference point as to the shape of the Earth

Although even from our quaint little reference point, a planet like Haumea is not a sphere.

In terms of planets, please point me to a resource depicting life on a sphere...I've yet to find one.

If you want planets, there is Earth.
Do you have any flat planets? And if so, do any of them support life?

If you want things other than planets, go look at a rock covered in moss.

Earth is not a planet

That’s a rather strange one liner. John.

Is this the new flat earth position?

The earth is not a spherical planet as it’s not a planet!

I can see how you have arrived at that.

Nature says all planets are spherical…..big  problem!

Solution :- the earth is not a planet and is therefore allowed to be any shape you care to think up!

Nice one. And your next trick of fantasy is:-
Really…..what a laugh!!!

I prefer its other name often used in sci fi, Terra

But they are still stupid names to call a planet which is 70% covered in liquid water. Also Earth is not even internationally recognized as its name. Every language will call it something different

Still, say we lived on Mars and we looked at 'Earth' and we wanted to call it something, we would probably have gone with Amphitrite.

This is your fill of Shifters useless information and thoughts of the day  8)
