Deadly violence breaks out in Paris as police charge protesters furious at Macron’s re-election

Violent scenes have broken out in Paris where angry protesters have taken to the street in response to the re-election of President Emmanuel Macron on Sunday.

Police have told reporters they were forced to fire into a car that was charging towards them in the centre of the city — killing two people inside the vehicle.

President Macron convincingly defeated his rival Marine Le Pen and prompting a wave of relief in Europe that the far-right had been kept out of power.

However, not far from where he gave is victory speech in central Paris, images showed ugly clashes between riot police and protesters.

One clip shows hundreds of riot police charging at protesters in unison — while loud whistling, yelling and the sound of glass breaking can be heard. The clip appears to show police retreating after the charge.

Meanwhile, police in Paris have confirmed officers have opened fire on a car that was trying to hit them, killing two people.

The vehicle was driving against traffic and sped towards to the officers, who were forced to open fire, according to a police source.

I see what your saying, but what business does Australia (being 'down under') have in a North Atlantic Treaty Organization? We are in the South Pacific

You would gain an active treaty with a large part of the world, as opposed to ANZUS which is slowly being abandoned.  You would gain all the benefits of a safer, more stable world.  ANZUS doesn't help Ukraine at all, and New Zealand withdrew completely.  ANZUS won't even help Australia, it's non binding.

Why is it an idiotic idea to want to join a global mutual defense organization that makes everyone safer?

In light of the Chinese making headway into the Pacific, having the might of the European military backing us might give China pause if they ever wanted to take aim at us for Mr Potato's scary talk

We didn't need a NATO alliance to aid Ukraine and have already done a lot in terms of aid and humanitarian and military supplies. However us being in NATO wouldn't make a difference to Ukraine. NATO is sitting this one out on account of a lack of signature on a piece of paper and if Australia was part of NATO, we would be ordered to not get involved

This is exactly why being in NATO would help.  If you do something Putin doesn't like, with his mental state he might decide you need some ships sank or your cities attacked.  Being in NATO would be a massive deterrent.

NATO isn't overtly attacking Russia or sending in the troops but the whole framework of cooperation and logistics is how a lot of the support is getting to Ukraine.

Regardless of any of that, the more countries that join, the bigger of a deterrent it is. That's good enough reason in my book.
