Is it time to reflect?
« on: June 30, 2021, 11:16:09 PM »
I just listened to a podcast about the first man in space Yuiri Gagarin, it’s an interesting listen and quite a story about a very remarkable man.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000v24g
That was a long time ago back in 1961 and since then many nations have joined in the space race such as India and China both sending and ‘landing’ craft on the moon though India’s craft more crashed than landed! China has been the more successful just recently landing a rover on Mars to Join the USA. Japan has taken a different route landing a craft on a comet and retrieving samples.
While all that is exciting the main space related activity has been the launching of satellites, with over 6500 currently in orbit with just over 3500 being in active use and scores of nations being involved.

Where does that leave the flat earth believer? It’s a serious question as their belief hangs on the conspiracy. Take that away and everything flat earth evaporates.
You can argue about, maps, horizons, flight times and any number of other topics, but at the end of the day all flat earth belief stands on a foundation of conspiracy in regard to space.
With Space X Starlight train of satellites clearly visible in the night sky along with a host of others that need more careful observations, the evidence is there for all to see.
If we approach it from the other side and look at evidence for the conspiracy there is none that would tie in China, Japan, India, the European Union, Russia and the USA , never mind the nations on the fringes.
In the UK space is big business with Satellite manufacturing and testing worth many billions of  dollars and employing thousands of people.
While flat earthers can rage against NASA and point out the alleged ‘NAZI’ connection it looks rather weak when the global picture is taken into account.
I understand how some can’t quite grasp the concept of a big ball of rock and metal spinning while orbiting both the sun and the galactic centre but the evidence is there for all to see.
Had this argument been happening 200 years ago flat earth believers would have had a case, a weak one, but a case none the less. In 2021 however it beggars belief how people can still cling to a belief that has nothing going for it.
The question is do flat earth believers need to reconsider their beliefs in the face of the cold hard facts of reality?
I know many don’t like this killjoy approach as you would rather be having some argument about some obscure and rather meaningless topic such as the O2 supply on a 1970s NASA lunar mission, which is rather pointless as all the data about such missions is freely available unlike details of the conspiracy that Flat Earthers cling on to.
As it says, is it time to reflect ?
And will Bullwinkle’s post be a one word negative response?

Timmy, I don't know how many times you need to be reminded, but this is a debate forum. People are here to argue about the shape of the earth.
I'm sorry. Am I to understand that when you have a boner you like to imagine punching the shit out of Tom Bishop? That's disgusting.

Well observed. But is any longer a valid one? Debate that is.

What’s going to happen when commercial space flights are routine?

Where will that leave your beliefs about the earth being flat when the truth is there for all to see? That’s  not saying it’s freely available now.

Will you just bolt on yet another piece to your ever expanding conspiracy that will soon involve the worlds population minus those like yourself. It’s a bleak outlook for you and the other flat earth believers.

But if I’m understanding you what you are really after is to left alone, conveniently ignore all the truth and all the evidence and be allowed to exist in splendid ignorance to rehash all the well trodden FE arguments!

Another interesting story is about Wally Funk who was denied by the establishment from becoming an astronaut because she was a woman. She will be going up into space with Bezos and will at 82 become the oldest astronaut.
Her and the other passengers will experience a few minutes of weightlessness and be able to marvel at the planet’s curvature through viewing windows before the pressurized passenger capsule returns to earth under parachutes.

Ah well!

Well good luck with that. I hope you and Tom will be happy.

I guess they were just waiting on CGI and virtual reality tech to get better to the point it's seamless with the real thing to those not looking for it

Same old same old. Rather than confronting reality you use 'out of the box thinking' to suggest its all CGI. Well if thats not lazy knee jerk thinking....

So when both flights blast off in the next few days and thereafter on a regular basis you will convince yourself its all CGI and all the passengers are brainwashed stooges.

Ah flat earth thinking at its best, the conspiracy, the catchall, the get out of jail free card, that allows your brain to be convinced its all nice and flat with no naughty curvy bits.

I am just sad that Bullwinkle did not answer "Yes". "No" would also be a funny answer.
Is it possible for something to be both true and unproven?

Are things that are true and proven any different from things that are true but not proven?

Branson’s flight into Space scheduled for tomorrow will be the first of many. It is sure to attract a huge amount of publicity.
Is crying fake and adequate response or is a more considered one required.

If Branson is dumb enough to attempt this for real, he will crash and burn. Or is it burn and crash. Whatever ::)

We will all see tomorrow. But what will you say when shown the mission footage? Or will you just resort to the no thought required answer, it’s fake? No reflection from you then.

Well, how about the possibility of it not being fake?  That seems like a pretty obvious answer, I'm surprised you missed it, but luckily I'm here to point it out, so you're welcome.  8)

Lets say for arguments sake he does exactly what he says. What is the big deal? He will simply 'skirt' the imaginary Kármán line. The ISS is 4x higher than that and even that is not 'that high' in the grand scheme. He will get high enough to see the suns true colour. Woop-de-doo ::) When he looks down for the few minutes he's up there He will still see the Earth mostly flattish looking. He wont see his country in its entirety in one frame. Not even the ISS 4x higher does that

Here is a picture from just over 250 miles altitude. Branson will be lucky if he reaches 62 miles

Even at that high, it's still not that impressive. For a couple of bucks I can buy the blu ray 'Earth from Space' and see much better pictures from my own lounge room.

What does how personally impressed you are have to do with it being real or fake?

If you think watching a DVD from your recliner is no different than personally going up into space, well that's just sad but it's also just your opinion.

Maybe we need a new logical fallacy. Argument From Disdain. If it's boring, it's not real, or something. 8)

First of all, the trip would cost a passenger hundreds of thousands of dollars. A few minutes and very little pay off

Secondly, a DVD is NOT a Blu Ray. Maybe DVDs is all you can afford but some of us prefer the better quality of a blu ray especially when TVs are so giant these days

And yeah, given the real risk of a hideous death as well as the expense of sitting in a shuttle as it skirts some imaginary line vs sitting at home and watching the best of the best pictures or video from even higher up with the comfort and safety of your own recliner  then yeah, I'll take that option

It's not like Branson is going to be taking a space walk to admire the view. He'd be lucky if he gets a view better than what you see out of an airplane window. Should he survive, he can check off a box to say 'been there done that' but as for the experience, you could probably get a bigger thrill skydiving.

Now that's something I've done and it's awesome. You actually get a real tactile sensation of doing something as you fall 200kmph. Imagine just sitting in the plane looking out the window instead. Not as big of a deal - but that's what these so called space jockeys will be doing with their coin (and with an orders of magnitude higher risk of death).

Am I 'jealous' Branson or other pompous morons with too much dollars and not enough sense (see what I did there) will skirt the Kármán line? Hell no!

Maybe if they went 1000km high and got to step outside. Yeah. That's something. But keeping your arse in your seat while you look out a window from 100km high - that's dumb ::)

The title
Billionaire Branson set to fly to space aboard Virgin Galactic rocket plane

But in the story
Quote
At the apex of its flight some 55 miles (89 km) above the New Mexico desert, the crew will experience a few minutes of weightlessness before making a gliding descent back to Earth.

Given that the 'edge of space' is deemed at being 62 miles or 100km, it's safe to say even if Branson lands safe and sound, he still cant say he's 'been to space' LOL There's still more than a Mt. Everest height distance between where he will be and where space is said to begin

I find it rather revealing you had to make a point of how you are totally not jealous of Branson taking a trip on a rocket plane while you can only watch a DVD when nobody else even brought that up.

Interesting.

Something else revealing is your comment on how amazing skydiving is and seem to think being launched up in a rocket plane won't give a "real tactile sensation".  Perhaps you think it's boring because you lack the imagination or knowledge to understand what it would be like?

Again, you need to separate your opinion from fact. Just because YOU might find something boring doesn't make that objectively true. All it does is show your claimed opinion.

Maybe you should take a hint from the thread title, sit in your lounge room and reflect on those observations. :)

Still dont read what's written and making up your own BS again. DVDs are NOT blu rays. Blu rays are way better. Buy yourself a blu ray player and see for yourself. Go one better and buy a 4K blu ray player and watch 4K blu rays

Nothing revealing at all about me preferring Sky Diving over sitting in some shuttle to look out a tiny porthole. The sky diving venture is not only way safer and more thrilling but cost like $400. Probably 100x cheaper than a trip to not even space

If I had the coin, I'd rather go on one of those MIG29 flights to the edge of space
https://migflug.com/flights-prices/mig-29-edge-of-space/

You go up to 22km high but sitting in one of those fighter planes with the view would be far more thrilling then a shuttle. I'd compare it to riding a motorbike vs sitting in a bus

It is always time to reflect.

That said, commercial "space travel" is not here nor will it be in the foreseeable future.  Those of you too young to recognize it may have missed the fact that commercial space flight has been "just around the corner" since the 1950/60's.  It will forever be thus.

The law of gravity is, what goes up must come down.  Although it is conceivable to dupe a person into believing that law can be broken, bransons trip is just a brief freefall.  If there is any commercial space travel on the horizon (that the average person can validate/verify), it will only go up and then straight back down again.

Yes but you AGAIN call a blu ray a DVD. Like you keep doing it and it shows how you make shit up when you reply

The rest of my repsonse is 'not semantics'. It's just you not wanting to reply because it would mean a more serious discussion such as the thrill of flying in a MiG29 vs your 'rocket plane' (who names this shit, a kid?)

Lets say you have $250K. You can choose to sit aboard your 'rocket plane' and look out a window akin to a regular airplane and a few minutes of 'weightlessness'.

Or for $21000 you can go in a MiG29 where you can pull serious Gs, do all sorts of aerial acrobatics and see out a much larger windshield. Real seat of the pants flying and at ~20km high. And you could do this trip 10x with change left over

I know which journey I'd rather go on lol

The Virgin Galactic trip...... Apart from a few minutes of weightlessness it would be little different to being on an actual plane.

And teh kicker is the Virgin Galactic plane STILL wont get you to space. 11km short LOL

You are welcome to your own opinions as I am welcome to mine. You trying to rubbish/dismiss mine says all I need to know about your character IRL. And that is a pompous prick

You really lost me there! Abuse aside that you will no doubt get away with!

There is a flight tomorrow, a commercial one , the first of many to the edge of space, a place that FE deny exist....don't you think thats relevant! In a couple of years from now such flights will be routine and thousand of people will have flown into space and seen with their own eyes the real shape of the planet!

The news articles say he will go to space

He will be more than a Mt Everest's height worth from the goal

If he returns whether by a safe landing or a fireball, he will not be able to say he's been to space

'Edge' is still generous

Given the massive size of the Earth, whether you are 20km or 90km high, the view would look pretty similar. For the money, the MiG29 is much more fun.

Still dont read what's written and making up your own BS again. DVDs are NOT blu rays. Blu rays are way better. Buy yourself a blu ray player and see for yourself. Go one better and buy a 4K blu ray player and watch 4K blu rays

You're such an amusing troll. ;D

That's what you got out of my entire comment? I said DVD instead of Blu-Ray? My filthy lies, exposed!

Hahahahaha. You keep being you. That response right there, pure flat earth debate style. I should frame it.

The rest of your response is pure semantics as usual. Calling a rocket plane a shuttle doesn't make it fake either.

Yes but you AGAIN call a blu ray a DVD. Like you keep doing it and it shows how you make shit up when you reply

The rest of my repsonse is 'not semantics'.

Your entire response is semantics, including this one. Just look at how much time you are obsessing over a completely pointless detail. It really makes you look stupid loosing your shit over what format you watch your videos in. You look like a four year old screaming GOTCHA because you are desperate to deflect attention from your defenseless accusations of it's a faaaaaaaake.

I don't even know what you are ranting about now. AGAIN? Please point out exactly where I called a Blu-Ray a DVD AGAIN. Because I have no idea what you think you are reading, but it's not there.

How that that even matter in this discussion, which you are desperately diverting into a discussion about DVDs and Blu-Rays.

I know which journey I'd rather go on lol

Well duh, going on one of those would threaten your entire worldview and prove you to be a crazy conspiracy theorist who is jealous of rich Americans. So yeah, easy to predict which one of them you will call sour grapes.  ::)

You trying to rubbish/dismiss mine says all I need to know about your character IRL. And that is a pompous prick

LOL. You started this by trying to trash Branson with childish insults and name calling and claiming it all a hoax and are upset people dismiss your garbage claims as garbage?  Hah. The fact that you are so jealous of other people you have to constantly belittle their achievements and hope they die says all I need to know about your character.

You can have all the opinions you want, I said that before. I also said you keep mixing up your opinions with objective truth. You seem to have an issue this this still.

Get over yourself.

Sigh. Here is the first time you said DVD when I clearly said Blu Ray...

If Branson is dumb enough to attempt this for real, he will crash and burn. Or is it burn and crash. Whatever ::)

But what will you say when shown the mission footage? Or will you just resort to the no thought required answer, it’s fake?

In fairness, what other possibility could there be? We saw what happened when 'Mad Mike' attempted his venture skywards.

What other possibility could there be other than it being fake?

And here you are again, even after being corrected, still call a DVD a Blu Ray. I never once said I watch a DVD. Who the hell still buys that format?? Oh... You obviously lol

Do you see how you're not paying attention? Even just now you are utterly confused you did it for a 2nd time. You clearly aren't here to debate/discuss and are only here to troll

Just because I defend flat earthers or play 'devils advocate' sometimes does not mean I believe the world is flat. You know I have stated on numerous occasions that I believe it is spherical for the human experience/reality. I have always argued that we dont know all there is to know. That seems to grind your gears though.

So stop making shit up and debating in such bad faith

And yes, I will make fun of Branson. This whole 'space trip' is nonsense if he doesn't reach 100km+. And judging by the articles I read, he will only hit about 89km. More than 10% of the journey less than required to make it a space trip. It might be a technological feat and achievement but I see no reason to be envious even if he does survive

You could blast me off 1000km into space but if the ride is so smooth I can't feel much of anything and the view is so restricted I cant see much of anything and the time spent there is only minutes, then frankly I dont see the pay off. Like I said, a sky dive is more thrilling. Or a MiG29 where you can pull heaps of G's do acrobatic stunts, see a shitload more out the cockpit window etc for only a fraction of the cost.

Tell me what would get your adrenaline pumping more.... A ride on a motorbike or sitting on a bus/train?

The law of gravity is, what goes up must come down.
No, the law of gravity is something more along the lines of all objects will attract all other objects with a force proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the distance between them.

What goes "up" does not need to come down.
If you exceed escape velocity (and don't get slowed down by something dropping below escape velocity) you don't come back down.
