Anyone change their mind on global warming?
« on: July 03, 2021, 10:11:16 AM »
Is there anyone here who used to think that global warming was a lie but now sees that 116 degrees in Portland is not normal, not "just weather"?

If you have not changed your mind, how hot would it have to get in Portland for you to believe that global warming is happening? 125? 130? 135?

116 degrees in Lytton Canada.

After all, by Zetetic principles, you weren't in Portland, so you don't really know, do you? It cold have been 20 below zero and fake news.

The Climate Change debate worst enemy was Al Gore. He (because of who he was) made the issue largely political. He was also a 'do as I say, not as I do' guy. It really rubbed me off the wrong way when an 'elitist' was making millions of dollars to grab he and his fellow cronies around the world to each take a private jet to some exotic location where they could have a talk fest about how the public should reduce their carbon footprint.

So at the beginning of the debate for a few years I thought it was all bullshit fear mongering that people were using to make money. When actual scientists were taking control of the room, I found it much easier to listen

You fell for right wing propaganda and misinformation campaigns. The issue was political long before Al Gore got involved, and it wasn't the tree-hugging hippies that have been running million dollar anti-warming smear campaigns for decades before.

If you thought it was all fear mongering, it was because that's what the oil and energy companies wanted to you think. Good for seeing through it eventually.

Al Gore has been demonized by the right. From a statement by the two computer guys who did "invent" the internet:

Al Gore and the Internet

By Robert Kahn and Vinton Cerf

Al Gore was the first political leader to recognize the importance of the
Internet and to promote and support its development.

No one person or even small group of persons exclusively "invented" the
Internet. It is the result of many years of ongoing collaboration among
people in government and the university community.  But as the two people
who designed the basic architecture and the core protocols that make the
Internet work, we would like to acknowledge VP Gore's contributions as a
Congressman, Senator and as Vice President.  No other elected official, to
our knowledge, has made a greater contribution over a longer period of
time.

You got the internet years earlier than without Al Gore because he saw what it could be right away. He was the leader of making it a public facility. He saw Arpanet and realized the potential of it, in a sense, he did invent it as a public facility.

I saw a ten year update on Gore's movie. It showed predictions from it, intercut with video of the predictions coming true. For example, the subways did flood, remember? Even if he got something wrong, he was right about the basic idea. Anyone who wants to continue to deny will have more and more to explain, just like FE.

Al Gore with his amateur movie was when I was probably first 'old enough' to be listening to all the commentary. Right wing propaganda or not, it irked me that a guy would have the hide to charge millions of dollars to give speeches and lectures about how the public needs to reduce their carbon footprint - all the while having him and his mates take jets to places what the rest of us plebs would love to holiday at. The carbon emissions and fuel efficiency per passenger from private jets is absolutely shocking

Could have set by example and taken a commercial airline or even better, Skype!

Greta Thunberg is at least not a hypocrite. She's not just do as I say but do as I do. If she and Al Gore were in the same room together, after she sailed halfway around the world and he jetted in on a private plane, I imagine she would be looking like this

Where do you think you got the 'idea' that anyone who is pro-environment has to live in a thatch hut and forgo every modern convenience before they are allowed to speak on the subject? I'll give you one guess. ::)

Yes, how dare he care about something and try and make a difference. For shame.

Again, take a deep introspective look inward and try and figure out where these ideas and feelings are really coming from. You are being manipulated.

Sorry, hard to believe someone 'cares' about the environment while banking millions of dollars to give a speech about how everyone should reduce their carbon footprint. Yet the very speech he organized to talk about this very important topic (and yes it is important), probably emitted hundreds of thousands of tonnes of CO2 when you take every attendees private flight to a location thousands of kilometers from most of their home towns

I have believed in climate change and that the fault is largely man and how grave and existential the threat is for the last 15 years or so. I have never though believed in Al Gores sincerity

For the modern day, take another 'elitist' and over privileged moron, Prince Harry. Clearly one rule for him and another rule for us plebs as he is a big fan of private jet setting. Now, his hypocritical and 2 faced attitude does not alter my view on climate change, but I think people like him, if they cant live by the standards they set, should simply STFU because they damage the credibility for people who for reasons that beggar belief, still need convincing the threat is real

This guy nails it.

Life is meaningless and everything dies.

Every man makes a god of his own desire

You keep falling for that right wing propaganda and repeat their talking points for them, they just LOVE when people attack environmental activists. Maybe you can get them to write you a check.

I'll ask my contacts at NASA to see who pays the anti-environmental shills. :P

Who cares anything about Al Gore. Portland Or was 116, Lytton BC was 118, and it's June.

Is there someone here who used to think that AGW was fake news and has changed their mind?
