Aussie wildlife
« on: January 08, 2021, 01:35:35 AM »
Australia is well known for its dangerous, odd looking and deadly wildlife. Sometimes you wake up to find a kangaroo has broken into your home and trying to beat the crap out of you. Or the mutant mammal Platypus that lays eggs, has venomous heel spurs, senses electricity and under UV light, can glow blue/green. Some of the deadliest spiders, the deadliest snakes, the stupidest animal (Koala)

And sometimes you might see this poking through your ceiling:

Don't you also have those big frogs that people try and make sport of and try to run over?

Indeed. They aren't native to Australia though but we're stuck with them now. We also use them to play golf with when we dont have any golf balls.

I remember reading a long time ago that some genius imported them to eradicate something else, like mosquitos or something, and low and behold, like every freaking time someone does something like that, it invariably goes sideways.

For slightly different reasons, SCG's FLA brethren brought in some pythons, released them when they got too large/unmanageable/boring. Now there is open season 24/7/365 for killing any and all python looking creatures in the Sunshine State. In three years they have captured 5000. Then, "The captured pythons were handed over alive to FWC officials to be weighed and humanely euthanized with a shot to the head from a bolt gun." Lovely image. So No Country for Old Men.

The best laid plans...

I can't imagine it's much different than rattlesnake. Maybe not as tender. Also, there must be 10's of thousands of pounds of it after all that bolt gun action. I'm surprised python isn't on all the FLA Chick-fil-A menus by now.

Seriously! What a waste.

Oh, it turns out that the ones in the Everglades have a high level of mercury in them. One of the hunters says she only eats the smaller ones, and she tests them first. https://www.cnn.com/2020/12/20/us/florida-pythons-eat-study-trnd/index.html

I've had crocodile. I thought it tasted a bit like chicken lol

Kangaroo meat is very strong tasting. It's not offensive but not delicious (no fat)

When in Korea I had dog :o

Armadillo is surprisingly tasty but also you can catch some disease from it so I don't recommend.

Kinda like lamb if I had to say it was similar to something common. I guess a bit on the tough side. Nothing to write home about (apart from the fact it was a dog!).

Horrifying. I can't imagine. I know its wildly hypocritical, but I could never bring myself to do it. Though the lamb bit does have a very minor 'when in Rome' effect...

I've read somewhere that where they eat dogs there's certain breeds that they consider pets and certain breeds that are considered food.

Could be wrong on that.  I don't know where I read that.

My dog has been the light of life since I brought her home from the pound as a puppy 10 years ago. However, in an apocalyptic pinch, I think she would eat me before I got a chance to eat her.

As I recall, the cane toad was imported to try to take care of beetles infesting cane fields.  As it turns out it was a failure because the beetles live near the top of the canes and the toads aren't very good climbers, so the toads wound up eating just about everything else.

Never heard of it. They aren't normally aggressive. I remember walking through a park late at night where there were dozens of kangaroos. Some male ones standing upright trying to make themselves look really big (showing off their enormous balls doing so). I just walk up to them with my super bright LED torch shining right in their eyes and they don't do anything. Some I've shone it for a full minute right in their eyes from just 2-3m away. They don't react and when they hop away they seemingly are unaffected

If I had a torch like that in my eyes for just a second that would temporarily flash blind me lol. These guys don't even care

No reason you couldn't use mace / pepper spray. But they are very quick and nimble

As much as I would like to sympathize with all the Aussies, I still find funny all the kangaroo fighting videos. There are so many kangaroos fighting each other in this continent even in cities lol! I've seen even guys fighting kangaroos in videos and most of the day as they're getting their ass beaten. I once had a situation myself with a snake that was quite venomous to handle myself. Luckily I could call https://tulsa.aaacwildliferemoval.com/ and they took care of the issue in 15 minutes without any accidents.

When in Korea I had dog :o

Ok this explains a lot.

My food chain goes.
1. My family, friends and my dog.
2. Other dogs.
3. Other people.
4. Mammals.
5. Birds
5. Reptiles
6. Fish
7. Insects.

Might have missed one.
Humans truly, truly don't deserve dogs. They are so much better than we are.

And what does it 'explain'?

Also do you eat cows? Pigs? Because they have demonstrable intelligence of around 3 year old human

What is the difference between an ethically farmed, bred and slaughtered pig/cow for human consumption as opposed to an ethically farmed, bred and slaughtered dog?

Are you imposing your values on another culture?

Some people object to eating Kangaroo too. I've eaten it. Are you mad about that? That's Australias National icon!

Some people have pigs as pets. Maybe they think you're (and others) are monsters for eating them

No one suggests it's cool to grab someones pet dog and eat it. Would you eat someones pet pig? Or just farmed pigs?

So where do we draw the line? What can we say is acceptable to be farmed and slaughtered while other animals get a free pass because maybe they are cute. I mean, adult pigs are ugly, but despite their intelligence we can just slit their throats and eat them up right?

Do you object to eating whales too? What about cultures so far north and remote the literally need to catch and kill whales to survive the winter? See, I have less a problem with that and more a problem with the Japanese sailing half way around the world to slaughter hundreds of whales to put on a stupid burger to feed a nation that has zero food shortages

Yeah absolutely. Eating dogs is wrong.
I would also impose my values on cannibalistic societies, it's just as wrong.

Why is eating an ethically farmed and slaughtered dog wrong but a cow, chicken or pig is OK? Do you think less of people who follow their cultural norm of dining out on a dog?

You really should give up the charade D1. It's too obvious lol
