Will you get the COVID-vaccine?
« on: December 31, 2020, 06:10:53 AM »
Since many countries (including mine) have already started vaccinating the risk groups, the date where everyone else may get vaccinated is coming in the forseeable future.

Will you guys get vaccinated? Why yes, why no?

I personally would love to get the vaccine asap!

Also, what do you guys think about people not wanting the vaccine, then requiring intensive care at the hospital? I personally think if you don't want the vaccine you should write something like 'If I get severely sick from COVID-19 I do not want to be put on a ventilator and do not want to be in the ICU no matter how sick I am' in your patient decree.

I'm a field service tech and tend to be out and about a fair bit, so getting vaccinated would help keep me from becoming a super-spreader.  I'm just not sure where I rank on the priority list.

A disease that's highly contagious that causes a lot of death and cripples economies should be as 'mandatory' as possible. Basically if you refuse it for yourself or children, you should lose all eligibility for any kind of government support and funding and your kids no longer allowed to attend a government school (good luck paying for a private one)

I was pretty firmly in the libertarian camp till this year.

The public's response to the COVID pandemic changed that. People really can't be entrusted with, for all intents and purposes, "unlimited" rights and freedoms. I definitely lean more moderate now.

Like sok I wouldn't want to take someone's spot who is in a high risk category.

I'll be getting it when I can.  My kids though are a little up in the air.  As far as I know there isn't a covid vaccine approved for kids yet.

I will definitely get the vaccine when it's available, but I live in Florida. We'll probably all catch the corone before we can get in line!

My mom, who is in her late 70s, called her doctor about it and she can't get one yet. They are vaccinating the nursing homes first, I think. I don't know how long it will be before it's widely available.

Just something to keep in mind.  Biden is hoping for 1 million vaccinations per day.  At that rate it'll still take the better part of a full year to get >300 million people vaccinated.

Thankfully I'm not in a particularly "at risk" group, and bleeding edge experimental vaccines are not a habit I'm looking to pickup nor encourage - regardless of what the marketing material claims it can do for me.

If you had already been exposed, which is seeming more likely every day - then side affects/negative repercussions of the experimental vaccine(s) are likely completely unjustified.  Time will tell I suppose!

A LOT of old people have succumbed to the relentless fear porn propaganda and are now happily paying to throw themselves into the meat grinder of mass experimental vaccine trials to get that data for us!

Those of us who can afford to sit out and monitor the trials should recognize/appreciate their good fortune.

Not even a little surprised you fell for this particular conspiracy theory.

Yes... much better to catch a disease that if it doesn't kill you, can give you permanent lung scarring and heart damage. Then you can pass it on to others too, bonus!

All to avoid feeling a little sick and because you're too afraid.  I wish we could put all you anti-vaxxers in one place so you can spread disease among yourselves and spare the rest of us.

Sounds like someone has succumbed to Trump's alt-right anti-science propaganda about COVID being totally harmless and just a hoax.

As I understand it, the observed "side effects/negative repercussions" experienced by the several million vaccinated so far seem to be quite mild compared to the "effects/negative repercussions" of the disease.

Fortunately if we have a good strategy about who to vaccinate first then we'll see quite a bit of good done before we're anywhere near that many vaccinations.

I don't know why some may have a concern. I once was handed a sugar cube and a dirty old hippie took an eyedropper filled with a clear liquid and squeezed a dollop on to it and I popped it in my mouth, let it dissolve and proceeded to trip my face off for 8 hours. So yeah, as soon as I'm eligible, I'll take my chances and get my pfizer stab...Hopefully administered by a dirty old hippie.

What is going on in the UK? I keep seeing that they've given people the first part of the vaccine, but there are problems with getting the second dose.

Probably Brexit.

I don't mean to be a downer here, but bear in mind people need 2 doses before it's really fully effective. So that means 2 x 300+ million. I hope we get over that 1 million per day number. It's going to take a lot of effort though.

I think Pfizer wants to make over a billion vaccine doses this year. Not that the US is the only country in the world.

It’s deliberate.  If I understand correctly, the first jab of the Pfizer vaccine is something like 90% efficacy , while the booster makes it up to 95% and provide longer immunity.

EDIT:  Sorry, that number is BS.  It’s much lower.

As we have the new much more transmissible variant running rampant in the country, they are delaying the booster to give as many people the initial shot as possible.  Hopefully they don’t delay enough to undermine the vaccine in the long term.

The rest of the world really doesn’t want this variant.  You should all stop anyone from the UK entering your countries for a few months.

That's good to know about the vaccine. I didn't know the second dose was a booster, I thought it was required for the vaccine to work. I'm glad they will get some benefit from a single dose.

It's already in the US. I think there are cases in California and Colorado.

Sorry.  I think my figure may be way off.  Might be more like 50 or 60% efficacy for first dose.

I got that from talking to a friend last night and just regurgitated it here, instead of checking.  Not cool  for a subject like this.  Apologies.

I’ll edit above post too.

Apparently there are so many numbers floating around that it's hard to tell what's what, but the bottom line is that you want both shots if you can get them.
In November, Pfizer said that after two doses given 3 weeks apart, the vaccine's efficacy was 95%. But according to the FDA analysis, strong protection of about 82% occurred after the first doses and was 52% between the two doses.

On Twitter today, Akiko Iwasaki, PhD, an immunobiologist with the Yale University School of Medicine, said one striking finding was that people were protected as early as 12 to 13 days following the first dose. She added that high affinity antibodies and longer-term immunity will likely require the second dose and that all vaccines should stick to the two-dose regimen.

I think the UK is trying to get as many people with some immunity and then hit them with the second or with the Oxford vaccine, which has just been okayed, as this new varient is ripping through the country, my mother in law (84) has had the first jab on new years eve, they have said they will contact her in a few weeks for the booster.

One of my good friends has a wife that is an Occupational Therapist and has been doing as much as she can via Zoom but has to go on-site with patients sometimes. And she's had to go on-site with people that were COVID-positive. She can't get a vaccine yet, making your observation all the more frustrating. I mean, it's a big country and things are going to be done differently everywhere, so there's no getting around the simple fact that a perfect solution just doesn't exist and even if one did, logistically it would be near impossible to mandate it be implemented the same everywhere. But still.
