Got some nasty Ransomware on my computer...
« on: November 24, 2020, 01:56:53 PM »
Well, I fucked up. I got Ransomware on my computer. It's encrypted my files, and there's a message telling me I should pay them Bitcoin or whatever. Pretty fucked. Nothing works properly.

Apparently it is some kind of BORISHORSE style virus. I installed the free version of SpyHunter, it seems to have found SOMETHING, but I don't know how to tell if it's what is causing the trouble. Even worse, I have to buy it to do the removal, or wait 48 hours until they activate a limited version or something. It's pretty fucked.

Even worse, I think even if the virus is removed, my files will still be encrypted, and I'm not sure if there is appropriate software to decrypt it.

Does anyone have any idea what to do?

Ouch.  That sucks.

If you have backups of everything vital, reformat the drive and reinstall. No safe way to come back from that in my opinion, you can never be sure you got it all.

If you pay, it's 50/50 they will just demand even more money from you.

Yeah no way I am paying. I don't have backups. I don't have anything that is too vital in this computer, but I do have many somewhat important things. I really hope this can be resolved.

If you don't have backups, then you haven't actually had ownership of your own files. You've been leasing them from fate. You are in the midst of being given a lesson from the School of Hard Knocks, because fate always comes to collect at some point. And that sucks. But you probably aren't getting your stuff back. Sorry for your loss.  :'(

Some ransomware have been crack. Here is a list from a quick search. You may be able to crack the one you got.

I don't mean this to pour salt in the wound, just curious - Why no back-ups?

Try to contact the company spy hunter to ask questions. Do you have good computer repair guys in the phone book where youo live? Call them, maybe. IDK

Relatively new computer, not enough super important stuff to care enough about making backups.

Understandable. Bummer all around. I agree with everyone else, reformat that drive. Then just do some cloud backing up of that desktop, pics, docs and music folders and you're good.

How many btcs do they ask for? How/where did you get the virus? Cloud storage shouldnt be an issue right?

Also thx for the reminder that I have to update my backups.

It didn't even say how much they asked for. I just said I should contact them, and gave me instructions about how to buy bitcoin. I imagine they'd give me a price if I contacted them. I got the virus on piratebay, probably.

One time I managed to circumvent the ransomware with a simple Windows Restore

This was before bitcoin and all they did was 'pretend' that your files were locked for your 'safety' and to pay them ~$60 for a special 'program' that could get rid of the 'virus'

Just restored to a time before that day and all was right again

I *think* it was Fritz chess that did me dirty. Although it might have been something else. I didn't, like, notice anything until like 2-3 days after I downloaded it. So I can't be sure if that's actually where I got it from, but I think that's the one, because that is the only suspicious thing I got recently.

Well I'm afraid that won't work here...

I handed it over to the techs. I hope they manage to do something. It's not a life and death issue, but it sucks having to lose your files and re-download all the apps.

Spy Hunter the 80's video game?

There might not be much you can do now. If the data was all that important then just let it go.

Lessons learned though.  Backups obviously, both on site and offsite, encrypted with a strong password.  If it's questionable then sandbox it, run it in a vm if possible.
