So I'm trying to expland my tasts beyond beef.  I bought a bottle of Mclellands Soctch Whiskee.  I thought it has "scotch" like butterScotch in the mname , How bad could bit could? 

Pretty bad.  I would have to describe the taste as something that could be very good at stripping paint.

Is it supposed to taste and smell like paint thiner?   

Are there any trips to drinking this stuff?  Chasers?  Just shooting it to get the pain over. Inverted recto consumption?  Feeding it to the kids?  Should I use a "gateway drink" such as wd-40 blasted in a tin cup and shooting that to prepare myself for drinking scotch?

This all stated by trying to find the most efficient beer, beer that will give you the most alcohol for the least calories.

Okay, so having read your in-depth review of this whisky and then looked it up, as it’s an “export whisky”, (shorthand for a bit shite) I have some recommendations.

First and foremost, don’t drink whisky, you and it have started way too late for this to be anything but a forced marriage ending in bitter recrimination, people will suggest various malts, grains and blends, (I could myself) and you will waste money on them and figure they are trying to poison you.
I love whisky, but my Nan started the process when I was nine by giving me Bells and ginger ale, it’s an acquired taste and if your taste is Bud, then I don’t think it’s there.

Vodka, drink that, you can add things to your liking and get quite merry and enjoy yourself.

I never got very well acquainted with peated scotch. I'm not sure if the one you picked was one of them, but it's something I associate with scotch simply because the few times I've tasted it, it's been in scotch.

Over the last year or a little more, I've been getting more into aged rum. But that's a tricky thing, because rum isn't regulated like other booze is, so if you don't know what you're buying you could end up with something that has a lot of sugar or artificial sweetener or added flavors that I generally find to be an insult to the distiller, the drinker, or more often, both. Or even worse, you could end up with Bacardi.

So if you are feeling adventurous and want to try something, here's my suggestion. Flor de Caña 18-year and Barbancourt 15-year are both fantastic. They are unadulterated and well-aged. The Flor de Caña is a traditional rum made from molasses, whereas the Barbancourt is made from fresh cane juice. Both brands have a cheaper, less-aged version that is good as well (in the $20-$25/bottle range for a 7-8 year old).

Maybe you should stick to Zimas.

I recall seeing bottles of Glenlivet at the liquor store.  Strongly considered buying one since if Jura sees fit to self apply this moniker than what stronger endorsement could there be?  But it started at $80 per bottle so... going to have to think about that.

If you're just starting with rum, then I would suggest mixed drinks as your gateway.  As a beginner's rum drink, I would suggest a traditional rum and cola.  When you get the hang of that, then you can move up to spiced rum and cherry cola.  For more sophisticated palates, it's hard to go wrong with coconut rum and hard cider.

You should mix up a pitcher of mojitos!

So if you are set on whisky drinking, go for something that is easy on the palate, Glenlivet, apart from having a good name, unless you go for the older more expensive is a bit of a let down, try Compass Box Hedonism (70cl, 43%), it's a mixed grain so not harsh, but blended to have complex taste all the way through from the masters at Compass Box.

Or, and hear me out here, India do some fine whiskies, I have a Paul John Brilliance (46%), it's not expensive and it too is complex and really nice.

Anyway, Bud Light to Scotch whisky is a bit of a jump. Why not go with the middle ground and see if you enjoy bourbon?

A relatively cheap Jim Beam has quite strong vanilla tones, that may suit the sweeter American palate. 

Now Jim Beam is vile, having said that my mother-in-law bought me a bottle of Red-Stag (JB black cherry liqueur) for doing some stuff during the summer, and I was all for giving it to a tramp, but it sat on the table that night and I thought “why not?” and it was actually not bad and 40%, so as Psycho' says of your palate, raised as you all are on everything with corn syrup, try Red-Stag.

I heard fish is good as it chicken and pork.  Just marinate it in whiskey or rum before cooking.  And then serve with glass of the same.

My strategy is usually to drink through the pain until I'm too drunk to notice the taste.

Also yeh, Jura is right... This stuff is an acquired taste that you usually acquire early. Though I would advise against vodka, it just tastes like watery alcohol, it has almost no special taste, it just burns a bit. Rum would be good.

Also ouzo if you can find any, it's taste is pretty mild and you're supposed to break it up with water, though how much water you're gonna add is up to you and how strong you want it to be. It is usually around 40%, but you could dilute it with water up to 20% effectively (if you dilute it much more than that there won't be much of a point any more).

Also gin disgusts me.

BTW every 15 year old ever got used to drinking the heavy stuff by mixing it with juice. You can mix literally anything with vodka if you're brave enough exactly because it has no taste beyond a burn.
