These companies chose who in the very long waiting list gets a machine. China currently has zero of these machines and USA has very few. I'd say it's too soon to poke the bear. Maybe if America diverted part of that $700 billion defense budget into industry to make it more self reliant, that would indirectly be a boon for self defense - because other countries know you can back up your threats because you 'dont need them anymore'. China is as belligerent as it is because they know the world needs them for their supply of goods. America and others also need to stockpile the raw materials - a lot of which is in China.

Australia should find other buyers for our raw materials and products too so when the time comes, we can seamlessly pivot and leave China in the lurch without any or much economic damage to ourselves. Right now, our success hinges on China buying from us. Absolutely stupid model as Europe found out with its reliance on Russia for energy


Although if America was keen to look at China's military preparedness, poking them is a good way to find out. Maybe China played into their hands and gave them valuable intel

As far as this idea that we're goading Taiwan into a war... We're sending old people to Taiwan to have photo ops with politicians there. If they choose to view this as an act of war then they can view pretty much anything as an act of war.

For all I know a little provocation might avoid a war. We tried appeasement with Russia. Didn't go so well.

Taiwan has almost the same population as Australia. America already doesn't like brown people coming in from Mexico. How will they feel about taking on millions of yellow people from Taiwan? Also the logistics of moving 24 million people off in short order, when it's probably an active war zone at the time might be a tall order. I'm sure most will want to stay while there is no active conflict - plus it's their home. If the Ruskis wanted Alaska back by force do you think those people would want to be resettled? Or stay and fight?

I can imagine China would also consider allowing Taiwanese people to settle in your countries (I'm sure Australia would accept too) as acts of war. (to be fair they consider almost anything an act of war). They got pretty pissed when we floated the idea that Hong Kong people under persecution from the mainland could settle here

I have a feeling Xi is a lot of hot air though. He knows the worlds resolve against Russia and we would do the same to them. We might need China but they need the world a hell of a lot more. It would end the PRC if we cut them off.

from what i can see, the taiwan strait is a whole lot less as far as the pacific ocean.

any blockade will need to be supported by bases in SKorea and japan and australia but even then, bombardment from the coast line to any armada sitting in the strait will just be a lot of death.
and if usa try to unseat from the back end, landing on the pacific side and pushing forward, it becomes an NK SK battle taht will kill the asset for generations.

Here is the naughty bit where invading Taiwan does not really help China.

Although Taiwan has a major stake in ASML, The machines are not actually made there. They are made in Europe, USA and some in S Korea. So Taiwan has control of the technology, but invading them does not help China. If China invaded them, then sanctions would mean that they just get the machines in Taiwan, which helps them until they break. And these things are super super complex, so they do break and need consistent service.

What the invasion of Ukraine taught the world,
1 - don't be fully reliant on someone that you don't fully trust. - Hence local manufacturing becoming a major theme on all political fronts in the West. Covid help set this in motion.
2 - The west will cut its ties with you if you invade an ally. And even though it will hurt the West, when done, there will be no need for you.

Russia is screwed for the next 50 years because of this. They dont have an advanced industry to dig them out of the hole like Germany had after WW1. And their only sellable resource is being found elsewhere. Their only option is to trade with the lowest bidder.

China sees this, and probably wont make the same mistake.

India is part of 'The Quad'. America, Australia, India and Japan. It's entire existence is to curtail the rise of China.

Keep in mind the Western world is also pretty forgiving on India despite their stance in the Ukraine invasion

Your thinking about a battle, not a war.

The aim is to win the war, not fight one battle.

There is the sticky situation where Taiwan has been given protection from the US. This means you risk nuclear retaliation if going against Taiwan. Sink an American air-craft carrier, and its free for all. The US has subs probably right in the middle of the Port of Tianjin.

China can certainly sink an ACC group. They have some decent hypersonic missiles (allegedly)
The US has multiple air force bases in Japan and S Korea. The closes one is Kadena Air Force base about 600km from Taiwan. China's air-force is mainly made of of Russian SU-27's and their own variant of it. At best, the SU-27 is comparable to the F-16, but im not even sure if this is true.

Chinas 400-500 Air Combat units may sound like a lot, but they wont stand a chance against what is just stationed in Japan. From Japan they can launch what ever they need to sink every single ship moving between Taiwan in China
Chinas Navy is mostly made up of old ships and small patrol boats.

But China's biggest issue will be what Russia learnt. When you invade a nation, its not your army against their army. Its your army against their entire population. Once China lands on Taiwan's shores, they are up against 7+ million male adults being consistently armed by the UN. With another 15 million women and children supporting them.

The PLA technically has over 2 million people. But most of them are support (like most militaries) and no country will send all of your soldiers to fight a war, especially when you have angered all the other nations too. So China will be sending at most a few 100 000 (How do they get so many of them to Taiwan?) scared soldiers to fight against 7 million men, fighting for their lives.

This is not a can of worms China will want to open.

The thing about Russia is that we can afford to cut them loose.  They have a lot of fossil fuels, some other raw materials, vodka I guess.  For all the noise they make their contribution to the world is actually pretty small.

China though, different story.  Severing ties would definitely hurt them a lot but it would also hurt us a lot and I don't know which one would suffer more.

Sanctions is a game played between economists and politicians.

You dont take everything away, you always need something on the table.

But you start where it hurts them more than you. Ban all hi tech microchips into China, no more phone production. But the West can still get iPhones and Samsung's from other countries. Overnight you kill their GDP and shift economic resources to S Korea, Vietnam, Thailand, which is already happening.

Still not pulling back, okay, then you go for a halt on all Iron Ore. Restarting Iron Ore production in Europe, India, USA will be pretty quick, as most of it has stopped due to cheaper Chinese iron, but the industries still exist. But China does not have a lot of local Iron Ore, so their construction industry grinds to a halt.

Want more? Halt soy, beef and pork export to China.

And so on, and so on.

If your clever, you phase these one by one as your own industry ramps them up.

Notice how Europe never cut Russian gas right away, but gave themselves time to find alternative supply. Once they have an alternative, they have no reason to go back.

Sanctions always hurt both sides, the trick is to make sure it hurts them more than you.

Taiwan being an island can also be an advantage. It's much harder to settle thousands of troops to overwhelm the populous in short order. Getting to the island will be a battle, then there is a population who has to fight or die. They can't flee like in Ukraine.

Russia can just roll in heavy artillery and thousands of troops across a land border. China cant roll in their tanks or other heavy weaponry to subdue to the populous. Everything will have to be by air and you would hope Taiwan (with the help of allies) can fend off against that

We may not want to actively fight the Russians to help Ukraine, but if we actively help Taiwan (all signs point to that we will), then it will be an unwinnable war for China despite a huge cost on all sides

Pretty sure they just want to keep the current status quo. Just whine like a bitch from time to time to assert dominance. It is enough to keep all sides from losing face (well China doesn't have much face left to lose anyway with its antics these days - not that it thinks so)

That strength is also a weakness.  China can easily blockade them.  They wouldn't even need to be close enough to engage them.  We can't just land a bunch of weapons in a country adjacent to them like we do with Poland.

Once the war starts we won't be able to supply them without declaring war on China.

Well getting to it is one thing, subduing the population is another

Then the hard bite of economic sanctions making the victory give the meaning of the word 'Pyrrhic' a whole new level. The Mainland will have to worry about its own populous getting antsy when all manufacturing and industry and thus many jobs grind to a halt. All the rich millionaires and billionaires of China who depended on the global economy will be worth nothing.

Anyway, lets hope it's all moot. China wont do anything stupid. America will keep testing the limits, everyone is just going to stay mad at each other but because we need each other more than we'd like, we aren't going to kill each other
