Right, because only the best people will be part of writing the new constitution.
No one elected the last group.
And truthfully, would YOU trust people to vote on who would be best to write a legal document that could protect and serve a country for 200 years?  I'd be afraid Trump would be chosen to write it.  Now just think about what THAT would look like?

I am still trying to figure this post out. Does Lorddave want to wipe the constitution out and start fresh or not?

I think he wants to wipe it out...?

Suicide kills even more people. Maybe we should have cameras in every room of our homes and especially in our therapists' offices live-feeding to local authorities so the government can help reduce suicides too. That'll help 'em get all those drug dealers and manufacturers too! Imagine the Utopian future when we're all behaving like good little lemmings because we have cameras reporting on our activities every waking moment, and the "undesirables" can just be carted away for reeducation!

Nah. Just take away the guns.
Oh, ok, so we're doing away with the 2nd and 4th amendments both, while also breaking down the barrier between church and state (that's the 1st amendment here in the US) to appease the religious fundamentalists that are trying to take over. That's 30% of our Bill of Rights. Maybe we should reconsider the rest of it too! Let's do away with the 5th, because if we can't catch someone doing something wrong on camera, we should at least be able to still get them under oath and force them to incriminate themselves about... well, something, they'll figure that out while they are questioning the person under oath. Also, the 6th is kind of a pain in the ass, I mean, when dealing with criminals (*ahem* I mean alleged criminals), why do they deserve the right to a speedy trial? THESE ARE CRIMINALS. Allegedly.

Why not all of it?  Wipe the slate clean and start fresh.  Write a constitution where its very very hard for any minority group to screw over America.  Where political parties are outlawed.  Where corruption is punishable by death.  Where if one jackass tries to take control or lie or whip up a frenzied mob, they lose it all...

I do.  It needs a total rewrite.  More specific language.  Tighter rules to ensure privacy can't be infringed.  Language to ensure the rights if all sentient beings, not just humans (for when the inevitable AI or Alien comes around).
Think of all the changes in the last 250 years.  Nation size, population, technology, culture, etc...
Religion has become less important, globally.  Guns are now able to kill dozens before a reload.  Computers and cameras allow for spying on people from half a mile away.  Hell, people can record every keyboard stroke from 30 feet away.  That needs to be addressed as well as any other technology that may crop up.

I just think it would be eaiser to start from scratch than try to patch up what already exists.

I also think we need a more parliamentary system in congress so its not just "Pick A or B".  Ranked voting as well, maybe.

Ok what I meant was what are your Bill of Rights doing for you vs other countries that don't have them
Not what your Bill of Rights are doing for a pleb like me lol

Because it seems your government is ignoring it because to look at America, it's not better. Your government is always finding ways to fuck you around and screw with your rights. Did anyone get in deep shit after the Snowden leak? Apart from Snowden who is considered a traitor. His crime? Exposing the governments crimes

When our govt infringes on our constitutional rights, the constitution is what allows us to basically take the govt to court. You might think it's too expensive to fight the govt, and sometimes it probably is, but if you've been targeted by the govt for something that is protected there are networks of constitutional lawyers who will help, and often pro bono. They are super constitution nerds, and winning a case is a big deal.

I don't know if you're aware of it, but in the UK if you say the wrong thing online, you can be visited by the police. I'm not talking about threats of violence, or plots to commit crimes, but silly things. Harry Miller was visited by the police for "liking" a poem on Twitter. They came to his work, to check his thinking. There are many other instances of the police in the UK coming after people for similar things.

I don't know how to judge Australian news sources (heck, the US ones are bad enough) but this seems like something constitutional rights to free speech might be useful for https://www.abc.net.au/news/science/2020-09-09/environment-scientists-censored-suppressed-data/12643824
I'm sorry. Am I to understand that when you have a boner you like to imagine punching the shit out of Tom Bishop? That's disgusting.

The abc is a good source. Not biased. Neutral. The shitty tabloid opinionated one to watch out for is news.com.au

That article doesn't suprise  me with our Liberal party government. Note that our 'Liberal' government is NOT liberal. They are conservative and swing to the right. Usually allying itself with far right minor parties.

The article mentions scientists receiving funding from commercial sources, eg mining companies. That's always a problem but our current government doesn't give a shit about science so isn't keen to fund it. It's also very pre occupied with spin and how it looks so I'm not surprised they want to suppress information that makes them look bad. Xi Jinping would be impressed

At some stage in the pandemic, didn't Trump want to take control of the CDC reporting because the numbers were making him look bad? I guess no matter where you go, politics is a bastard

https://ncac.org/resource/research-findings-suppressed-by-government-environmental-science

Have no idea if this place has any bias but it seems governments everywhere aren't keen on the truth being reported. I just wish governments dumped a bunch of money to universities, research organisations and scientists and took a complete hands off approach. No researcher should have to get money from commercial sources to do their work. The report is tainted before its even begun

Trump wanted to take control of everything, I wouldn't be surprised if he tried to suppress the CDC. I seem to recall lots of rogue govt workers during his administration leaking information.

" Write a constitution where its very very hard for any minority group to screw over America. "

There are protectiond  wehre minorities are able to have a more powerful voice so as not to be squahsed by the majority.

You wouldnt want the lowly populated breadbasket states to be pushed around by the more populated metropolises.

However gerrymander amd voter supression is NOT the wya.l and is not built into the constitution - is it?

You can't put all that shit in a constitution, that's what laws are for...  No, you can put a bunch of crap in a constitution, just look at Florida's. That's what happens when you let people vote on what goes into a constitution, and when elected officials ignore what the people want (like marijuana).

In the America that exists right now, agreeing on a new constitution is an almost certain impossibility. Scrapping what we have without an already-hashed-out replacement is a fantastic way to slip into anarchy. Or worse.

The term gerrymander was used in a derogatory way originally. It's named after an old governor from Massachusetts with the last name Gerry. The name was a way to make fun of him for a district remapping that heavily favored him and made a very weird shaped district that was said to look like a salamander, or Gerrymander. It was in the early days, but definitely after the Constitution was written.

Not that it specifically worded.
The constitution is vaguish for a reason as spzce says - yoy cant fit all law books into a single paper.

Constitutions work like irobots asimovs 3 rules.

The first law is that a robot shall not harm a human, or by inaction allow a human to come to harm. The second law is that a robot shall obey any instruction given to it by a human, and the third law is that a robot shall avoid actions or situations that could cause it to come to harm itself.

There must be a scotus or top court to use their brain things and discuss the relevancy of gerry and water on sundays to see if these conflict wirh the right to vote.

Even those nra nut jobs who use the talking point - the word "license" isnt in the 2ndA so we dont need it.

It doesnt say and it doesnt not say.
But at the heart of the intent, what laws are you making for the people?

"The bill eliminates the Postal Service’s retiree health care pre-funding mandate"

This alone will save the Post Office, as the 75 year pre-funding mandate that NO other agency has to do is what has been sinking them.

Lets hope the Republicans don't manage to kill it.

The grant guidelines do not specify what the smoking kits should include. According to Harm Reduction International, a London-based nongovernmental organization, such kits can contain rubber mouthpieces, brass screens, lip balm, disinfectant wipes and glass stems — the “crack pipes” in question. The contents can vary based on the organization distributing the kit as well as state and local laws on the distribution of drug paraphernalia.

It can be true that the Biden administration isn't advising or instructing anyone to go out of their way to find kits with that kind of stuff in it, and it can also be simultaneously true that some of the kits that are being distributed have the raw materials to build yourself a nice little crack pipe.

Quote
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden is expected to issue an executive order on Friday to split the $7 billion in Afghan assets frozen in the U.S. to fund humanitarian relief in Afghanistan and compensate victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, according to a U.S. official familiar with the decision.

The order will require U.S. financial institutions to facilitate access to $3.5 billion for Afghan relief and basic needs. The other $3.5 billion would remain in the United States and be used to fund ongoing litigation by U.S. victims of terrorism, the official said. The official spoke on the condition of anonymity because the decision had not been formally announced.

Okay, maybe he did put crack pipes in the safe smoking kit.

It's the only thing stopping me.  Same with heroin, I'd be shooting that stuff up all day but I can't find any clean needles.

I wish the government would help me get addicted to crack and heroin.  I am just unable to do it by myself without help.
