I dont know of one case where the breathing issues were due to lung damage. It's usually a psychological issue.

It does depend on the type of mask.  A tight fitting P2.5 or N95 mask can get very uncomfortable when worn for many hours.

The disposable paperish surgical masks that are tied around your head do a pretty good job but are single use, itchy and n00bs will probably touch their face even more for wearing them. They are also pretty loose around the sides but better than nothing

A cloth mask is probably better in terms of its comfort which means touching it less and the fact you can wash them. We should really try harder to not be such a throw away society

I had a cloth mask, but when using it for 4h+ it kills you. It had quite thick material, if onlly used for short time, it was no big deal but once it got whet it basically didn't let air through. Its in the trash now.

Everybody should just be using surgical masks unless they need an ffp2 one for some reason.
These are cheap and well tested.

Probably.  Air not getting into the lungs fast enough making people feel like they are deprived of oxygen.

That's why you're supposed to use several thin layers.
