Does anyone know how R works?
« on: July 10, 2020, 01:25:21 PM »
I am supposed to make a shitload of graphs and stuff with R. I have never used it. Wasted like 4h now already, have absolutely no idea how that piece of crap works. I can manage to import my data into RStudio so it shows my data in a table on the top left. But I havent yet figured out how to do anything with that.
Where do I start? I tried some youtube stuff but nothing helped.

Do you know any programming languages?

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT!!!

I wanted to let everyone know that DNS is no longer only posting in AR. And so people should check before replying to ensure they are not posting content that belongs in the lower boards in a place where that kind of reply isn't the reply that one should be posting.

Have you tried reading the instructions?

I have watched some tutorials and stuff, but didn't yet know that one. Thanks.

I have downloaded c++ like 4 years ago, got it to say 'hello world', then deleted it.
That's about it.

Basically, R is a bitch.  Don't be put off that you're struggling with it, as pretty much everyone does, including people with lots of programming experience.

You just have to put the work in.  Don't know what the Dummies book is like, but this one is good

The question I have is how did you get stuck with this assignment and why would your employer  set a deadline to have this developed in short order without an experienced user of the program.

Well I wish I was employed, because then I'd at least earn some money for it  ;D

It's for my thesis.

As for the 'why': Profs are s.o.w's and don't give a shit I guess.

What is it that you are trying to do with the data?
Nothing too complicated. A boxplot, scatterplot, some simple line diagrams (but with like 4000k data points) and maybe a few more things.

I think I'm starting to get the hang of the R thingy. I made a big graph with 4 different plots: 2 line plots (with 2 lines per plot) and 2 scatterplots (labeled).  It has over 60lines of code, including a few explanations and empty lines 8)
Gotta make a boxplot and a mann whitney u test tomorrow... Will see how that goes!

Wait, how did you get RStudio? Were you given a license? Isn't it expensive as fuck?

Also I don't know R, but I do know Fortran. You know, the very fashionable language everyone uses. Also I've done some Java, Matlab, Mathematica, C++, and a little bit of C#. Idk if it's anything like any of these other ones, but maybe I might be able to help.

Rstudio is free, no? At least I didn't pay anything and I didn't have to register.

Also, welcome back!

(right now, I don't need any help. Biggest issues were understanding where to put the scripts and how to get data from excel->r)

Yeah I just checked, it's just that there's a pro version that's like 1k bucks.

Excel confuses me.

It's based on the old S. It's by statistician for statisticians. Multiply two vectors together and see how easy it is.

R is a dick tho.

I am supposed to place a title outside of where the title() function allows it to be. So I set par(xpd=NA) so I can plot stuff anywhere. But now the s.o.w. makes my graph go all over the place, because it has quite large values  >:(

I guess I'll have to check how to further adjust xpd or how to only apply it for text and not the graph. Or I have to adjust all my data so I does not go over the plot axis...

Ah I think I got it already, I can use the xpd=NA as an argument of text() instead of par(xpd=NA) which applies it to all 4 of my plots.
Too easy...
text(-90,80, "A", cex=1.5, xpd=NA)

what makes you think I use ggplot2?

ggplot has all those fancy crap in the background, like grey colors or whatever. That's not really something scientists use.

Except for if you use r for science and not a fancy school project or newspaper. I need simple and clean graphs, standard r is perfect for that.
