Protests in Belgrade
« on: July 10, 2020, 04:44:18 AM »
So, what do you guys here think, are there indeed massive protests in Belgrade going on right now, as Guardian says? I live in Osijek, around 150 km from Belgrade, and I haven't heard anything of it until now. And I speak Serbo-Croatian, but I can't find any mention of it in the local news.

Also, what do you think the name "Belgrade" means? Does the "bel" part indeed come from Serbo-Croatian for "white"? Or is it more likely related to "pel" in Pelmonostor (Hungarian name for Beli Manastir), probably an Illyrian word for hill?

Why would I have to be trolling? The fact that there appears to be no mention of the protests in the local news strongly suggests they aren't actually happening, right? Try searching the Internet about those protests in Serbo-Croatian. The only thing about that written in Serbo-Croatian is this BBC News Article written in Serbo-Croatian. It's less reliable than local news are, since it's just translating from the western media sources (which are in turn just copying from one another), right?

I couldn't agree more. NATO's Merciful Angel (also known as, if I am not mistaken, Nobel Envil) killed thousands of people, it's hard to deny that. And whether or not it did anything to end the war is very questionable. Slobodan Milošević was a tyrant, but that doesn't justify killing innocent people, including children.

Nope,  it broke up internally with ethnic separatist movements.  Nato only got involved much later when Slobbering Milosovic started ethnic cleansing.

Did you hear about this on CNN?  You don't think Albanians didn't kill Serbians? Do you know how many Christian churches were burned? Of course the fake news blamed Serbians and Milosovic, but this is why its called Fake News LOL

I'm almost 50 years old so no, not too young. I was watching operation "Strike against Yugoslavia" every day. But I also did my homework and went to other sources to get a clearer picture of what was happening. And the killings were on both sides, the Albanians were pretty fucking bad. Before all this Yugoslavia was actually a great country, the deep state and world government made sure Yugoslavia had to fall apart, this was all political. Yugoslavia was an economic threat to EU, so they split it into many nations, many poor nations that have no chance to stand up to Germany or France.

We had lots of Serbian refugees from Communism in Australia,  they would tell you that anybody who called themselves Yugoslavian were communist and not true Serb.

Yugoslavia broke up because there were never any real Yugoslavian people.

Australia is home to many criminals and exiled people so I wouldn't listen to what Serbians in Australia say. However many Serbians in Serbia do miss Yugoslavia because under Tito, it was a stable country where ethnic disputes and racism was prohibited. Croatians, Slovenians, Serbians, Macedonians Albanians and others lived in peace and no one was violent. Some compare old Yugoslavia with old Soviet Union, but this comparison only true when it comes to diversity of ethnic demographics. Economically Yugoslavia (which by the way means Southern Slavia) was much better then Russia or any other country in Warsaw pack. That is because Yugoslavia was not communist, rather it allowed private property and businesses while in Soviet Union you could own no business, so yes Yugoslavia was a very good social project and it very well.

Incredible how people will adapt to rules.

I do not doubt that the society did and acted as they were ordered.
Problem is that is not freedom.

New Earth has a very naive view of Yugoslavia.   It only lasted as it was held together by a brutal dictator

Quote
Dominic McGoldrick writes that as the head of a "highly centralised and oppressive" regime, Tito wielded tremendous power in Yugoslavia, with his authoritarian rule administered through an elaborate bureaucracy that routinely suppressed human rights.[6] The main victims of this repression were during the first years known and alleged Stalinists, such as Dragoslav Mihailović and Dragoljub Mićunović, but during the following years even some of the most prominent among Tito's collaborators were arrested. On 19 November 1956 Milovan Đilas, perhaps the closest of Tito's collaborator and widely regarded as Tito's possible successor, was arrested because of his criticism against Tito's regime. Victor Sebestyen writes that Tito "was as brutal as" Stalin.[192] The repression did not exclude intellectuals and writers, such as Venko Markovski, who was arrested and sent to jail in January 1956 for writing poems considered anti-Titoist.

Even if after the reforms of 1961 Tito's presidency had become comparatively more liberal than other communist regimes, the Communist Party continued to alternate between liberalism and repression.[193] Yugoslavia managed to remain independent from the Soviet Union and its brand of socialism was in many ways the envy of Eastern Europe, but Tito's Yugoslavia remained a tightly controlled police state.[194] According to David Mates, outside the Soviet Union, Yugoslavia had more political prisoners than all of the rest of Eastern Europe combined.

Tito's secret police was modelled on the Soviet KGB. Its members were ever-present and often acted extrajudicially,[196] with victims including middle-class intellectuals, liberals and democrats.[197] Yugoslavia was a signatory to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, but scant regard was paid to some of its provisions.[198]

This was someone who locked up poets for fuck's sake.  He also failed, it was only 10 years after his death that everything fell apart.  He didn't build a multi-ethnic country, he just suppressed everyone equally.

People in Croatia get offended when you talk against Josip Broz Tito. It's still like a God to many people here. And Bleiburg Massacre Revisionism is also rather popular here. One of the most prominent Croatian linguists, Mate Kapović, is a Bleiburg Massacre Denier.
