That study, which had been posted on the preprint server SSRN, was taken down at the request of one of the authors back in May after concerns were raised about the provenance of the company’s data.

There have been a number of trials of ivermectin in COVID-19 patients, although they haven’t met all the criteria that scientists typically deem necessary to generate strong evidence—that is, being randomized, well-controlled trials with hundreds or thousands of patients and findings published in a peer-reviewed journal.

Doctor Took Ivermectin and Still Got COVID

Pierre Kory, MD, one of the most vocal proponents of ivermectin, got COVID-19 in August, despite taking the anti-parasitic medication on a weekly basis to ostensibly prevent the disease, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported.

Kory has since doubled down on the drug, urging that the prophylactic dose be increased to twice per week, according to the Journal Sentinel.

In a statement, Kory told the paper: "The most important event that occurred between my testimony [at Sen. Ron Johnson's (R-Wisc.) hearing on COVID-19 in December 2020] and my getting sick was the delta variant," pointing to Delta's higher viral load compared with previous variants.

Kory had called ivermectin a "miracle drug" at the December 2020 Senate hearing, the Journal Sentinel reported. "If you take it, you will not get sick," he said.

The Journal Sentinel further reported on the rise of the drug in the U.S. and its connection to conspiracy theories. According to data from IQVIA obtained by the paper, prescriptions for ivermectin jumped from less than 10,000 per week in November 2020, to about 40,000 per week by January 2021. While scripts went back down as cases diminished during the spring, they were back up to 88,000 for the week ending August 13, the latest week for which there were data.

There's been an uptick in side effects from the drug, the paper reported. According to the American Association of Poison Control Centers, 2021 has seen 1,810 cases of ivermectin poisoning in the U.S. as of Oct. 31, compared with 499 for the same period in 2019.

The Journal Sentinel noted that two large randomized controlled clinical trials -- one in the U.S. (ACTIV-6) and one in the U.K. (PRINCIPLE) -- will provide a more definitive picture of the use of ivermectin in COVID-19 in the near future.

Stella Immanuel, a doctor at the centre of a controversy over unproven and potentially dangerous claims that an anti-malaria drug can treat Covid-19, is no stranger to conspiracy theories.

Facebook and Twitter have taken down the viral video in which she appears, saying it violates their policies about misinformation - but not before it was retweeted by Donald Trump and one of his sons.

The US president defended himself, saying he found Dr Immanuel, who was born in Cameroon and is based in the Texan city of Houston, "very impressive".

"She said that she had tremendous success with hundreds of different patients, I thought her voice was an important voice but I know nothing about her," he said on Tuesday.

Dr Immanuel, who is also a Christian pastor, gave a speech on the steps of the US Supreme Court in Washington, captured in a video first published by right-wing website Breitbart on Monday.

Dr Stella said taking hydroxychloroquine was common in Cameroon and therefore not harmful

Along with other medics from a group called America's Frontline Doctors, she said that Americans were being denied a potential cure for Covid-19.

"Nobody needs to get sick. This virus has a cure - it is called hydroxychloroquine, I have treated over 350 patients and not had one death," said Dr Immanuel.

Despite some early studies raising hopes that the drug could be used to cure coronavirus, one subsequent larger scale trial has shown it is not effective as a treatment.

Actually I wrote approval of pharmaceuticals requires the FDA to publicly release the data it relies upon to issue approval, prior to formal approval.

That wasn't the point of the video, though. The US media all claimed the lab leak was debunked right from the start, they called it a conspiracy theory. Lab accidents happen all the time!

One conspiracy theory that can be debunked for all time is that this virus was man made. If it were, scientists the world over could spot the telltale signs it has no natural origin. There is universal agreement of any scientist worth their salt it's of a natural origin.
