Do you guys think you'll get through the coming month or two without catching the omikron?

I personally think I won't be able to get through the winter without getting it, but thanks to the vaccine I'm not too worried.

Also omikron has shown to replicate 70x faster in the bronchial tissue, but 10x slower in the lung (which means reduced risk for pneumonia, which is what kills you). Apparently, hospitalisations are 2/3 down with omikron compared to delta. Which is good news, but considering it is so much more infectious, hospitals might still get heavily overloaded.

The Aussie state of NSW has given up and decided to 'let her rip' just before Christmas. Even something as cheap and effective as wearing masks indoors has been scrapped as well as the 'check in' QR code at places. So contact tracing will be long and arduous. The end of any lockdowns I agree with. Over 90% double vaxxed. But we'll see thousands of infections per day and everyone moving everywhere to meet up with family over the Xmas new years and if they kept the masks to indoor public spaces and transport that could save a shit load from getting infected.

Oh well, I still wear my mask when indoors in public like shopping.

Despite 99% of people in my city being vaccinated, the omicron variant has been found here weeks ago (in school kids mainly) so no doubt we'll get it eventually.

I'd like to say I pity the poor unvaxxed bastards around here but they are so few and far between. We got booster shots organised to be given to everyone 5 months from their 2nd shot. 4 months possible if the shit really hits the fan with omicron

I'm not 100% sure, but considering how infectious omikron is, I doubt masks are helping too much. I personally would make it a rule that unvacced people have to stay at home and only recovered/vacced are allowed in public. This would be the only rule, no further restrictions needed.

I wish the news about omicron would become clear. A week ago they were saying it might not be as bad, but this morning I read that it's just as bad. Maybe they are trying to get people to take it seriously so they are not willing to say if it really is milder.

Whatever reduces the r0 value helps. Masks are cheap and QR check ins do not take much effort. I think now was the wrong time to do away with these simple and cheap measures.

Everyone has had their chance here to be vaccinated by now. The only people not vaxxed, are the ones that chose not to. Lockdowns and lockouts only hurt businesses and the economy. It's time we stopped pandering to anti vaxxer muppets and if they choose to face a deadly virus head on naked, that's their choice.

Make health care for the antivaxtards user pays. As a tax payer I object to funding their shitty BS choices that's an affront to every good bit of data. A vaccine dose is a few dollars. Treatment for covid in hospital can run into tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars. Fuck 'em

If you're vaxxed and run into trouble, I'm happy for my taxes to help them. If they chose to disregard and avoid a proven safe and effective vaccine - they can be sent home or mortgage their house to pay for treatment.

Maybe that threat would be enough to kick some hesitant muppets to do the right thing

Life has got to return to normal. We have an effective vaccine and the infrastructure and ability to vaxx the population every 4 months if that's what's needed. But crippling our economy on account of sparing a few morons getting sick or dying? To hell with them. In the absense of a vaccine, I'd say we should be strict with lockdowns and quarantines. But we have a vaccine. It works. Aiming for 'covid zero' is simply madness. We should accept we'll get it while taking cheap and easy mitigations to 'flatten' the curve. That was always the point. Covid zero was never the plan

People are going to get sick and people are going to die. That's just reality.

It's still too early for conclusive data, mostly because death rate lags so much behind infection rate. But the preliminary data we got looks promising. In my opinion it's safe to say omikron is less severe than delta; but by how much we'll see in a couple of weeks.

No chance.  I've got symptoms now, just off for PCR test.  Though I suspect it could be super fucking busy at the testing centre - it's ripping here.

I know plenty of people who've caught it last week or have someone in their house with it.

I don't know. It's the weirdest thing. Cases are down in Utah for now. We've had random cases show up in our kids school but they never infected anyone else. So there was never a school wide outbreak.

I just think we don't have enough data to be all that worried yet.

I'm tripled and flu shotted.

Yes, could well be a cold, but the omicron symptoms are meant to be pretty similar to a cold.  I also went for Christmas dinner with 8 colleagues from work on Tue and then one tested positive.  I'm not really worried about catching it  - as I'm vaxxed up, middle aged, fit and with a decent immune system.  I just need to know whether to isolate or not, so went for PCR yesterday.  Then again, I don't want to be passing any other bugs around.   :P

My wife had the Moderna for a booster yesterday and it has laid her out.  She's more sick than when she had covid - though it will probably pass quickly.

Yeah, just the text.  I'm positive - will have got it on Tuesday in the pub  - symptoms 2-3 days later, which is about the norm for The Omicron.

Thanks guys, appreciated.

And yes, The Witcher is getting a viewing - had most of xmas off as hols anyway, so was planning on that.

Having watched the first one  - the "story so far" bit left me totally baffled.  Was just watching it thinking "who?  what? why?  eh?".  Then again, season 1 was pretty baffling at the the time and that was 2 years ago.

It's a weird show : it is so flawed it should be rubbish, but there is something very likable and entertaining about it.  I think Henry Cavill is a big part of that, it's like he was born for that role.

I accept that the witcher is crap and go from there. It has a lot of fun parts. I too was baffled by the first season. I didn't realize until close to the end of it that one of the storylines precedes the other by something like 20 years.

I like the freaky monster of the week thing they do. It doesn't even matter if I can't remember what the over all story is when there's a flying cat monster and a hog man. Kinda reminds me of early X-Files in a way.

The younger Radovanovic pleaded guilty to two charges of not complying with electronic registration, one count of not complying with directions and one count of not wearing a face mask in a taxi.

Just getting caught up on things. Sorry to hear you got the VID, JimmyTheCrab, hopefully it continues not being super serious. The timelines in season 1 of The Witcher were a fucking mess, I can't imagine someone watching that and having absolutely no exposure to the story beforehand. It was a confusing mess even with a little bit of background. But it was a lot of fun to watch still and I am excited to watch Season 2. Probably going to happen during the last week of the year while I'm on vacation. You'll hopefully be back to 100% by then.

Interesting preliminary findings about Omicron...

Most of the World’s Vaccines Likely Won’t Prevent Infection From Omicron

They do seem to offer significant protection against severe illness, but the consequences of rapidly spreading infection worry many public health experts.

All vaccines still seem to provide a significant degree of protection against serious illness from Omicron, which is the most crucial goal. But only the Pfizer and Moderna shots, when reinforced by a booster, appear to have initial success at stopping infections, and these vaccines are unavailable in most of the world.

The other shots — including those from AstraZeneca, Johnson & Johnson and vaccines manufactured in China and Russia — do little to nothing to stop the spread of Omicron, early research shows. And because most countries have built their inoculation programs around these vaccines, the gap could have a profound impact on the course of the pandemic.

...Omicron so far appears less lethal than the Delta variant.

I'm hoping the last bit remains true.

I wonder if the media will distinguish between people in the hospital with covid and people in the hospital because of covid. I think most hospitals administer a covid test to all patients, so it could look like the hospitals are flooded with covid patients when they were there for something else.
