So Australia lifted its ban on Australians in India wanting to return home to be able to come home

A total of 80 out of the 10000 odd Australians in India arrived today. Another plane will do the trip again next week

There would have been more but if you test positive for covid, you must remain in the country with an over stretched and busted up health care system (so essentially are told to hope for the best or die on the street). So at this rate it should be several years before we finish getting them home anyway. Might as well be banned

Our borders aren't set to reopen to normal travel until the latter half of 2022 and that's only if the snails pace rollout of the vaccine (less than 3 million so far) is done and dusted by the end of this year. (unlikely given they keep shifting the goal posts). For some reason they want to wait around 6+ months before doing anything with our borders and travel

As the pessimist, I think this has less to do with actual health or reality, and more to do with Australia's Federal election to be held late in 2022. Our illustrious dropkick Prime Minister wont want any cases of covid to taint his chances so he is going to keep us locked up costing our economy hundreds of billions of dollars more than it need to

Sweden's king has said his country "failed" to save lives with its relatively relaxed approach to the coronavirus pandemic.
King Carl XVI Gustaf made the remarks as part of an annual TV review of the year with the royal family.
Sweden, which has never imposed a full lockdown, has seen nearly 350,000 cases and more than 7,800 deaths - a lot more than its Scandinavian neighbours.
Prime Minister Stefan Lofven said he agreed with the king's remarks.

Well yeah but did anyone serious expect the US not to completely fuck up their response to covid?  Even without Trump we're at a real disadvantage to handling a pandemic.  Sweden's supposed to be one of the smart countries that has their shit together.

Covid here in Oz and our response to it has saved more lives as it also crushed the spread of influenzas. So we saved lives there. Literally 0 people died during the winter from influenza.

I guess lock downs and travel restrictions also reduce risk of accidental death too.

Basically countries like Russia massively under counted their covid deaths (hardly a shock) where it looks like Germany might have over counted.  Though it gets more complicated than that: Germany might have had 81k deaths from covid, but reduced its deaths in other areas to such a degree that the net effect was only 52k.   This has happened in many places to a lesser or greater degree.

Nigel McMillan and his team from the Menzies Health Institute at Griffith University, alongside scientists from City of Hope research centre in the US, say the “next-generation” antiviral approach could stop the virus from replicating in the lungs.

Professor McMillan said stage 1 clinical trials revealed the antiviral treatment reduced the viral load in mice lungs by 99.99 per cent.

While traditional antivirals, such as Tamiflu and remdesivir, reduce symptoms and help people recover earlier, this new technology uses small interfering RNA (siRNA) to attack the virus’s genome directly, stopping the virus from replicating.

Lipid nanoparticles, designed at Griffith University and City of Hope, will be used as the drug delivery vehicle to deliver the siRNA to the lungs.

Professor McMillan said the treatment had proved incredibly effective in mice trials.

“Treatment with virus-specific siRNA reduces viral load by 99.99 per cent,” he said.

“These stealth nanoparticles can be delivered to a wide range of lung cells and silence viral genes.”

The nanoparticles are injected into the bloodstream and head straight for the lungs, going into “just about every lung cell”.

Hopefully these treatments don't have side effects that turn us all into zombies or anything

But having worked in a lab, I'm still skeptical. I know how much they like to fluff up and cherry pick data to look good. You hear so many promising things and then never hear about it again
