I see the argument in his videos comments peddled out that covid is hardly killing anyone or putting people in hospital anymore - such as in WA which recently opened and has since welcomed tens of thousands of cases with very few hospital admissions

"Why should I get vaccinated? It doesn't stop the spread!". It is so weird to use this to justify not getting vaccinated. IMO, THIS is exactly why you should get vaccinated. You cant rely on others doing the right thing to avoid the eventual contact with the pathogen to your body anymore.

There is no dispute that it vastly reduces hospital admissions and death. The reason why Australia has been successful is because before states opened up to 'live' with covid, most states had over 90% fully vaccinated and close to 100% fully vaccinated for the elderly and most vulnerable.

I suppose we could compare Australia to Hong Kong. Both were largely covid zero so had a population with immune systems completely naive to sars cov2. Australia had a very good vaccination rate. Hong Kongs vaccinated rate was shit (like America)

Hong Kong has had a massive spike in death. Could have easily been Australia as our immune systems are totally naive where other countries have had their fair share of cases (such as America) and those (left alive) have some immunity. Not Hong Kong

As for me - still managed to avoid covid. Still get emails every week that such and such snotty kids in your childs year group at school tested positive etc. My oldest kid just got his 2nd dose last week. Youngest to get his 2nd dose next month. Neither of them have gotten sick

The lab, Valisure, last year detected benzene in hand sanitizers, sunscreens, deodorant, dry shampoos, conditioners, antiperspirants, deodorants, body sprays and anti-fungal treatments. The contamination has been most frequently detected in aerosol or spray products, some at levels the Food and Drug Administration characterized as “life-threatening”.

The findings suggest that benzene contamination is widespread and is probably in more products that have not yet been tested, said David Light, Valisure’s chief executive.

“Benzene really shouldn’t be there at all,” he said. “What we’re seeing is a fundamental problem in the manufacturing of a lot of consumer products.” To date, Valisure has tested 662 items and found the chemical in 180, or about 27%, of products.

Procter & Gamble, Bayer, CVS and Johnson & Johnson have issued voluntary recalls for widely distributed brands including Brut, Sure, Pantene, Herbal Essences, Old Spice, Secret, Tinactin, Lotrimin, Coppertone, Neutrogena and Aveeno. Among the recalled hand sanitizer brands are Art Naturals, Best Brands and Natural Wunderz.

Light pointed to “decades of research” that has found no safe levels of benzene exposure because it’s so toxic at very low levels. Don't forget the other reason to get vaccinated, as they are finding more and more serious long term effects even in people who had no symptoms.

He gets some bogan lady from Queensland, Australia who openly states she is not a statistician or science expert and just a concerned citizen. Basically she shows a bunch of graphs about numbers of deaths and insinuates that the vaccine has caused thousands of excess deaths. John furiously nods his head in agreement about how concerning it looks

For the bright people in the audience (of which none of Johns commenters seem to be) anyone who knows a little bit about anything would see that there is more to the story of comparing deaths from 2015 and again in 2021 and that only looking at the raw number is stupid

Australia not only has a growing population, (more than 2 million since 2015), it also has an aging population. When you factor this in, you realize there aren't any excess deaths above and beyond what you would expect. Honestly you would expect better from a guy whose worked in a hospital for decades but here he is just grabbing some openly admitting know nothing bogan from Australia's most bogan state that shows a bunch of graphs and forms a conclusion on her own anti vaccine bias.

Can you link to the video?  I'm curious.  Australia seems to have had +3.5% excess mortality for 2021, but overall had negative excess mortality during the pandemic  - one of the few countries to achieve this.

Wait...are they literally just looking at the raw number of deaths?  An excess mortality calculation uses a model to calculate the "expected deaths" - this factors in past mortality rates, the age of the population and makes seasonal adjustments (as more people tend to die in the winter).

It's over here pretty much. Well, people treat it like its over. I still wear a mask though. I'd say only 1 in 20 people are still wearing them. We all wore them when the city recorded double digit figures daily. Now we are recording thousands daily.

I actually like the mask. I'm not really fussed with this variant if I get it given my vaccination status. However a positive result would mean forced time off work which could cost me over a thousand bucks! I'd also hate to inadvertently give it to my friend who I like to see as he is on medication which suppresses his immune system.

But yeah I think the mask is great given it should also vastly reduce the amount of colds I get each year. Some years, I'd get them back to back for months. In 2020 and 2021 I didn't get bothered at all.

Also gives me a level of mystique . Ok I wouldn't go that far. But apparently women do find guys in masks more attractive lol

Well, OK.  What the woman says is absolutely fine - she very clearly states several times she isn't an expert and asks at the end for more knowledgeable people to look into it.  Nothing wrong with any of that.

And yes, you're right, when you adjust for age and population size, then there were lower excess deaths in 2021 compared to the 5 year mean.  Not the 5.7% increase she states, which is for crude figures.  Here it is:

Comprehensive research has confirmed that the drug ivermectin, formerly touted by some as a wonder drug against COVID-19, has no medical benefit in treating the disease.

The TOGETHER study was a major worldwide project involving a series of clinical trials designed to test the effectiveness of a range of drugs against COVID-19.


Co-author Craig Rayner, a scientist at drug development company Certara, said the researchers conducted a double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled trial of ivermectin involving 3515 COVID-19 patients at clinics in Brazil.

Dr Rayner said they found no clinical evidence that ivermectin had any effect on treating COVID-19 symptoms.

“We found that treatment with ivermectin did not reduce the need for medical admissions to hospital settings for COVID-19 patients,” he said.

“We examined it from multiple angles, multiple sub-group analyses, and ultimately, there is no suggestion of important clinical efficacy from ivermectin on COVID-19.”

The study used a dosage of 400 micrograms per kilogram of body weight – the highest dose of the drug considered medically justifiable.

Glenn Begley, an internationally respected biotechnology consultant who was not involved in the TOGETHER trial, said the work showed that ivermectin was not effective at treating COVID-19.

“This result isn’t really surprising … from an industry perspective, only one drug in a thousand ultimately crosses the finish line,” Professor Begley said.

Ivermectin first came to global prominence off the back of a study from Monash University in Melbourne that showed it could kill the SARS-CoV-2 virus in a petri dish at extremely high concentrations.

It was then taken up by a number of people in Australia and around the world, who claimed it was a “cure” for COVID-19, despite the lack of medical evidence for that.

In September last year, Nationals MP George Christensen emailed the head of the Therapeutic Goods Administration to personally challenge the agency’s bid to prevent ivermectin from being used to treat COVID-19.

And the Palmer United Party tried to tout drugs like ivermectin as COVID cures in advertisements that have been suppressed, many featuring former Liberal MP Craig Kelly, who defected to the party last year.

The TOGETHER trial looked at 11 potential therapies for COVID-19, including hydroxychloroquine and metformin.

They found two had good efficacy against COVID-19 symptoms – fluvoxamine, which was reported late last year, and pegylated interferon, which was reported this month.

Professor Begley said a number of other ivermectin studies were still underway around the world, and he believed that in light of the TOGETHER findings, they should now be halted.

“One would think that the ethics committees that approved those studied should review those studies in light of the emerging data,” he said.

“We have a situation now where to treat someone with ivermectin, you have to withhold a therapy you know is effective … I can’t see how such a study would be ethical.”

Ivermectin is primarily used in both humans and animals to treat parasitic infections, and the researchers said it could still play a minor role in patients with COVID-19 who were suffering from symptoms related to their parasitic infection.

But Dr Rayner said he hoped this research would put the issue of ivermectin as a COVID-19 treatment to bed once and for all.

“There are more than 80 randomised trials of ivermectin,” he said. “Meta-analyses with the low-quality and fraudulent studies removed have shown that ivermectin doesn’t have a treatment benefit,” he said.

“I think, overall, the body of knowledge does not support any use of ivermectin for treating COVID-19 at any stage of the disease.”

The research has been published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
