With omicron transmissibility being as strong as it is, I don't think it's fair to say people who get infected are idiots. This latest variant is really REALLY good at finding new hosts.

My stepbrother remains asymptomatic. But a positive PCR test is a positive PCR test so now we have to all do the quarantine and testing thing.

Why go out and buy food? I'm sure America is developed enough to buy online from grocery stores and home deliver.

Omicron sure is a bastard.

Canberra has gone from single digit case numbers a day to triple digits. After the scale of Christmas and New Years gatherings are realised, we will have thousands in a day. Oh well. We're pretty much all vaccinated. No one is in ICU or requires ventilation despite the thousands currently infected.

That's probably because the vaxx is doing some work and making them get mild covid.

Agreed. While stats might say they have 'covid', the reality is almost all of them will probably shake it off without getting the actual disease. Infection sure but disease, no

I'm talking about regular grocery shopping. Why go out for that if you dont have to? Delivery for the groceries for me is $4. No obligation to tip in this country. They do the shopping and drop it off at your door. Sure beats driving to and from the shops and sharing the airspace with covid infected mouth breathers

I thought Omicron could be infectious 2 or 3 days before you develop symptoms. Kabool is trying to spread the corone!

I hope you didn't catch it, boydster. Hopefully if you did, it will be the mild or asymptomatic version since you've been vaccinated.

the CIL was attending antivasker festivals.
the SIL asked if it was ok to visit her unmasked and well, it wa ssummer, they were visting at the cottage i said ya should be safe enough.
and sure as shit on the facebook we see this dumbass sitting hugging on an outside couch and CIL holding SIL's 6mo baby.

Great recommendation, Crouton, I will check out Space Squid Game for sure.

As far as how exposed my household is feeling, I kind of think we're going to be fine. My dad wasn't around my stepbrother very much, and stepbro had only been visiting them for a few days. So when my dad came over, he would have been only 2-3 days since exposure, and then he was only here for like 10-15 minutes before he left and while we were sitting closer than 6' apart, it wasn't much closer.

However, my son is there and he was definitely hanging out with THE INFECTED ONE playing video games and stuff until probably very early in the morning. He's triple-dosed on his vaccine. Stepbrother is triple dosed, but only got his 3rd dose on Tuesday last week so it hadn't taken full effect for him yet.

I'm probably irrationally overconfident that it's the omicron version of the bug since it's so prevalent right now and seems pretty adept at causing breakthrough cases. But I'm hopeful it's the new one because it seems to be "safer" in terms of sending fewer people to the ICU. Especially vaccinated people.

Hopefully all will be mild if anything at all.

As for the space squid game, Silent Sea, I'm on episode four. It's basically a mash-up of Alien/Aliens, Contagion with a dystopian underpinning akin to what caused Waterworld to become water world. I't not great, by any means. But, it's pretty good for hunkering down time and just to see what sci-fi/dystopian horror trope they will chuck into the mix next.

Also I'm digging 'Station 11'. Infinitely better than the above, but very dark and relevant. I think that's on HBO Max.

Just to put some much needed perspective on the vaccine and myocarditis

Myocarditis risk from the vaccine is 1-2 in every 100K doses given (according to TGA Australia)

But whats the risk of myocarditis from an actual sars cov2 infection?

https://www.newscientist.com/article/mg25133462-800-myocarditis-is-more-common-after-covid-19-infection-than-vaccination/
Quote
HEART inflammation triggered by some covid-19 vaccines has been a concern, especially in younger people, but a preliminary study suggests that in those most affected, it is six times more likely to occur after a coronavirus infection than after vaccination.

Chances are, if you get myocarditis from a vaccine, you were sure as shit going to get it from the full blown viral infection. Myocarditis is also often easily resolved on its own, even without treatment. But imagine if you were battling covid at the time? Your prognosis would not be as good

But why are we only hearing about myocarditis now? Is it unique to covid vaccines? Well despite being classed as rare, it occurs much more often then you'd think

https://www.myocarditisfoundation.org/about-myocarditis/
Quote
Myocarditis is classified as a rare disease but is estimated to affect thousands of adults and children in the U.S. and around the world each year. 3.1 million cases of myocarditis were diagnosed in 2017 (statistics posted in Lancet, November 2018).

3.1 million. Years before covid existed

We vaccinate entire populations in short order. So chances are you are going to have more than a few pop up with myocarditis whether they had the vaccine or not.

It is odd people balk at a vaccine with its uber low risk profile but dismiss the orders of magnitude higher risk of not just serious and permanent internal damage but DEATH from covid.

Other style vaccines such as AstraZenica have also had myocarditis attributed to them
https://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/965000
Quote

The first large population study to investigate the association between different COVID-19 vaccines types and cardiac effects and adverse events shows a small increase in the risk for acute myocarditis with both the mRNA-based vaccines and — in what may a first in the literature — an adenovirus-vector vaccine.

The excess risk was seen following the first dose of the ChAdOc1 (AstraZeneca/Oxford), the adenovirus-based vaccine, and the mRNA-based BNT162b2 (Pfizer/BioNTech). It was observed after first and second doses of the mRNA-1273 (Moderna) vaccine

It looks like it's not the 'vaccine' that is damaging people, it's the immune response. You can get your immune response from a vaccine which has no working virus or you can get your immune response from a full blown infection replicating out of control and fucking up your internals likely leading to early cancer, stroke or heart attacks post infection.

Perspective.... Go get some

https://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/uk-news/new-variant-southern-france-found-22631670

A new mutant strain coming out of France but obviously lets pin in on some Cameroonian

Quote
A new variant is worrying scientists following an outbreak in southern France.

Twelve patients in the region have so far tested positive for the strain, which showed an 'atypical combination', reports the Express.

The index case had returned from travelling to Cameroon, suggesting it may have originated in the African country.

In a preprint paper, that is yet to be peer-reviewed, experts from a French government-back programme said they had identified '46 mutations' in the variant.

The variant has been given the name B.1.640.2 and was first detected by experts at the IHU Mediterranee Infection in Marseille.

The new variant in Covid-19 patients from Forcalquier, in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence region, was announced last month.

While new variants discovered all the time, it does not necessarily mean they will be more dangerous than Delta or Alpha.

What makes a variant more well-known and dangerous is its ability to multiply because of the number of mutations it has in relation to the original virus, like Omicron.

In the new preprint paper, dated December 29, scientists said: "SARS-CoV-2 variants have become a major virological, epidemiological and clinical concern, particularly with regard to the risk of escape from vaccine-induced immunity."

Update on the boydster clan. My son, father, and stepmother all took antigen rapid tests on Sunday. They were all negative. Obviously, that's a good thing, but my concern there is that the antigen tests tend to be really effective at diagnosing symptomatic people, and much less-awesome when it comes to diagnosing asymptomatic people, so my boy is staying with grandpa until Wednesday for now.

We haven't taken any tests ourselves yet, we are just staying isolated for now. No symptoms to report or anything at this time. I have a feeling we're going to end up remaining unCOVIDified with this particular incident. Fingers are crossed.

Space Cowgirl, hopefully your stepfather is able to keep his distance. Sucks that it has been mostly staff members, that makes it harder to avoid since it's kind of their job to get up in your business.
