I've tried taking this Cool Test a couple times, and keep failing.  I guess I'm just not cool.  Maybe you guys can do better.

I passed too.

TDN, it apparently dynamically generates the webpage and gives the cool people a different page from the uncool people. Here is what I get when I view the source:

While I doubt it is the case with this page, parsers for dynamic code can be set to parse HTML documents as well.

I would assume so.  In Apache it's set in the .htaccess file (like so).  I'm not familiar with IIS, so I couldn't tell you.

File extensions are socially constructed.  There is nothing absolute about ".htm" -- a computer can be made to treat such files as MPEGs or as EXEs if you like.

But they aren't.

Oh, and before I forget: Is there a way to stop Mac OS X from returning magi.local when trying to access through a domain name? Some of the visitors to my OS X server report that it incorrectly gives them the address magi.local when trying to access via the DNS name. I've tried using the virtual hosts, but it still does it, and I've also tried several bind settings. Still nothing.

Haven't you ever seen images like this one?

It is simply a .jpg image file, and yet any time a request is sent to access it, a script dynamically generates the image file and sends the dynamically generated image file to you. Dynamically generated webpages can work the same way: you type in url/page.htm, but instead of getting a static file called "page.htm" it automatically calls a script which dynamically generates the page for you.

The real question is how the dynamically generated page knows which accesses are from cool people.

Yeah, the image in my signature does that. The server treats it like a .php file so it is created dynamically.
