All right, just a nice simple question...
« on: January 09, 2007, 10:37:48 AM »
Just what would make you want to believe the Earth is flat? I mean there is absoultely no evidence for it, yet there is so much evidence for it being round. The idea of a consipracy from the government is ridiculous. In fact, who are "the government"? Do you think this is the same for every country in the world? Also, even when somebody provides evidence for the Earth's shape being flat, the responses are poor, like for example any picture of Earth being round is unreliable. Where are the pictures of it being flat then? Am I also right in assuming nobody has ever travelled through, or even been to the Pacific Ocean between Australia and America? They don't travel the long way, you see.

Don't get me wrong, the idea of a flat Earth seems much cooler, but it's just a silly *virtually disproved imagination. I don't mean to appear arrogant, but I find it hilarious myself people honestly believe it is flat.

*Using the word "disproving" in the most pedantic way possible. It can't be proved for definite the shape of the Earth, but there's no reason to think it is flat.

There's plenty of reason to think it's flat; it looks flat. So if you want me to believe something different than the evidence of my own eyes, you will have to show me some way I can verify the Earth's shape for myself. Think about it; what experiment can I possibly perform that would determine the shape of the world?

So you believe only what you see? What about optical illusions? And why insistence of doing experiments yourself? Which ones have you done to prove the Earth is flat?

Yeah what have you done to prove its flat????

Opening your eyes isnt good enough sorry man you must have some reason to belive it other than you dont belive its round. I dont even know if you belive in FE but you replyed.

Hang on...but Ive read so many times on here that the reason that its seen as Round, or horizons, various things like that, are all optical illusions.

So are you going to tell me that the incredibly damming evidence that the Earth is "flat" is because "It looks flat"?

No, I don't have to have some reason to believe it. You are the one making a positive claim, beyond what I can verify myself. You must therefore back it up, with evidence I can verify for myself. I have no way of determining whether NASA photos are faked or not; therefore they do not count as evidence.

We cannnot verify all information.  If we did that, progress would grind to a halt as all scientists rediscovered every principle known to man.  I understand what you are saying, yet there must be a point where we must rely upon other sources of knowledge.  To think that thousands of scientists are wrong, unless based on a better argument than "It looks flat", is quite frankly ridiculous.

By your argument, are you sure Japan is real?  Have you ever been there yourself?  What about Paris?  Even me?  If you believe only what you can verify yourself, you're going to be very ignorant indeed.

oh thats gooood...i like that; I guess the only thing i would say is that we have laws in nature and laws in science. apples fall to the ground, water contains hydrogen, and Brittney Spears is a slut but i don't know if the "Round Earth" is a law or a theory. Could some one clarify.
still, i have a thought in my brain that maybe all the "laws" are actually just theories and the majority want you to believe that nothing can go against the law. BUT~ if thats true then why do people go to jail if they are not against the law? Hmm... someone please clarify.

Yeah i totaly understand that, most people just post pictures and thats that eh haha. Na i belive the earth is round due to the whole lunar eclipse thing, had to dig around to find it but nothing else out there makes half as much sence.

Another question...

When a lunar eclipse occurs, the moon moves through the Earth's shadow. The shadow is round and the only object that always projects a round shadow is a sphere.

The flat Earth is also round.  And flat.  Like a coin.  However, that doesn't describe a lunar eclipse; very true, very true.

This is assuming it is actually Earth's shadow that eclipses the Moon. In FE, it is a dark disk that obscures the Moon occasionally.

Lol i love how FErs just invented a "dark disk" as soon as someone asked why lunar eclipses happen?

Well..... to be fair, thats not too different to what real scientists do,
when they can't account for most of the mass in the universe.

More to the point, why do you think physicists believe there is dark matter

I dont know as i am not a physicist but i think it has something to do with holding the universe together.

Something along those lines
