Why does SMF allow a non-mod/admin user to delete their post after another reply to the thread has occurred?  Most other forums I've used prevent this.

Have you tried that? I know it looks like you can but once when I wasn't a mod I tried it and it didn't work.

I managed it back when i was keeping at 9999 posts. You can't delete threads you start, but I think that's about it.

This.

While I have no problem with being able to delete posts, it might be wise if a stub were left simply saying "Deleted by name at time/date."

On another site where I was a Mod,
deleted posts just became invisible to regular members.
They remained in full view for Mods.

I agree with Bullwinkle.

The reason you can't delete threads you start has to do with members that are no longer here, and those like them that might come later.

On the other hand, some permanence would be nice. We can add this to our backlog. Personally, this bugs me as a user to this site. If everyone feels that way, this is a non-starter. Let your voice be heard here in that case...

First thing is getting us on some new servers, and getting our shit deployable in an effortless way.

We cannot. Posts that are deleted are gone forever.
So it would be prudent for us to keep a copy of any post that might prove contentious.

Do you understand what permanently deleted means?
If you aren't quoted, it's gone.

If you predetermine your post is contentious, don't click POST.   ::)

I suppose. As a general policy though we rarely delete messages. We usually just move them to quarantine.

In my experience it is best to offer an idiot a choice.
It makes them feel proud and important.

You don't ask them what they want for lunch.
There is no telling what they will insist upon.

You offer a peanut butter and jelly or ham and cheese sandwich.

They feel they have made a choice and they get what you want them to have.

Forum members are the same children.
Give them choices, never an open ended question.

FYI, at the other forum it is configured such that all deleted posts land in quarantine first (whether by user or mod/admin). They can be permanently removed from there if desired, or restored by a moderator/admin. I think it is a an option an admin can toggle, but don't remember for sure.

That's been mentioned. I'm in favor of that. Mostly because it makes snipping spam out of good threads a lot easier.

That sounds a good system. In the rare case where a user claims that a post has "disappeared" the situation can be investigated.
One person here claimed exactly that but one has to trust the mods/admins and I assume that person did not even trust them ::).

If someone can't trust the admins on a site it's time to move on.

While people deleting posts and making older threads hard to read is unfortunate, I want to advocate for FES always having a way to make posts non-public, if not totally deleted. FES and FE'ers are often targeted by malicious actors, including but not limited to trolls, conspiracy agents, and crazies. It may become necessary for any prolific poster to obscure past posts for personal safety.

Plus it's not really feasible given that posts get quoted.

This happened recently (this month) and I did the necessary work.

That said, there are other good reasons to not want posts to be deleted. I'm not seeing folks deleting posts to obscure their argument or otherwise use it in a disruptive way. On the otherhand, perhaps some folks are.

If its a feature, I say we enable it for a bit and see how often folks delete stuff that shouldn't be deleted. It could be more work than worth to whomever has to empty the trash bin.
