##### Tides...
« on: January 16, 2007, 10:12:58 AM »
In the FAQ it says tides occur becuase the whole lot tilts, blah blah blah.

Have I missed something, or has this failed to recognise that it is high tide on both sides of the earth at the same time, the side closest to the moon, and the side furthest from the moon.

This is because the earth and moon both have a fairly strong gravitational field, so the earth does infact orbit the moon, to a small degree. The common centre of mass is inside the earth, but not quite at the centre. The result of this is that the high tide on the moon side of the earth is because the effect of the moons gravity on the earth is stronger than the centripetal force of the earth orbiting its off-centre centre of mass, and the high tide on the opposite side of the earth is becase the centripetal force is greater than the moons gravity, so you get a high tide there as well.

How does this work with FE theory?

They yell until they are red & blue for people to read the FAQ(hey that rhymes), & when they do & very easily disprove something like you have, they either say the FAQ is out of date, come up with some utter bs theory or just blame the conspiracy.
It's a no win situation as REers have to rely on proven science (which FEers pick & chose what to agree with) which can't be changed whereas FEers have the privilege of being able to change science to suit themselves.
Basically it's a soccer game where the RE team have one person on the field and the rest of the team are devoted to moving the goal posts around.

Actually, we threw out the tides from tilting theory a while ago. Erasmus came up with a much better explanation of tides being caused by Earth vibrating. I don't remember the exact details, but I'll try to find the thread for you.

Edit: Aha! here it is: http://theflatearthsociety.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=5919

I also have some good ideas about how we could explain things. I will PM you with some cool ideas that will make FE look a little better.

Why bother with a PM? If you post them here everybody can comment on them, and give suggestions on how to make them better.

He might be afraid of being wrong. lol

No offense, just making an observation that I see from the general populous of "FE"'s here.

Exactly. What happens if he's wrong and I don't realize it? Then we'd be all embarassed.

There is nothing wrong with being wrong if your goal is the truth.

Then if your "FE enhancing thoughts" are wrong, you just made FE look that much worse anyway, and gives it more reason not to believe it.
