Sales of Huawei tanked when Google kicked them out of the app store. A brand that was a real threat to the Apple and Samsung Power houses. No app store - no care to buy. Sure you can always use the internet to view the likes of YouTube and Gmail etc but the experience and interface is a real let down

Elon says all these things as if it's so easy to accomplish but it's clear he hasn't really thought about it. Or if he has, hes saying it to string along his fans into thinking he's a lot more influential and powerful than what he is. Hell never follow through and deliver a 'Musk' phone with its in house software, app store and most importantly, app support.

If Huawei wasn't blacklisted I would have bought one of those. But no google play store means my interest went to zero.

Mission accomplished Google. Bastards.   >:(

I seriously doubt Apple or Google will kick the Twitter app off their stores, but if they did, can't you just open twitter in a browser on your phone?
But that makes data harvesting so much harder.
You have to have the website open.
But with an app, they can collect data whenever they want.

Elon says all these things as if it's so easy to accomplish but it's clear he hasn't really thought about it. Or if he has, hes saying it to string along his fans into thinking he's a lot more influential and powerful than what he is.

https://techcrunch.com/2022/11/28/great-wall-of-porn-obscures-china-protest-news-on-twitter/

Quote
Search any major Chinese city on Twitter, and you will see a cascade of spam tweets showing porn, escort services, and gambling content that are published every few seconds, making it impossible to get any legitimate results.

There has been a “significant uptick” in these tweets over the last three days, according to a China-focused data analyst. The surge in such bot content coincides with an unprecedented wave of protests that have swept across major Chinese cities and universities over the weekend.

The demonstrations are largely a result of China’s zero-tolerance approach toward COVID-19, a rare show of defiance amongst the people. The country’s stringent COVID restrictions have led to prolonged lockdowns across the country, obstructing life, business, and manufacturing activities.

Protests erupted last week at Apple’s biggest iPhone factory in China as workers were roiled by delayed bonuses and concerns over COVID spread.

Discussion of the new nationwide protests is strictly censored on Chinese social media and protestors have turned to foreign platforms like Twitter and Telegram for communication. All major Western social networks are banned in China and access requires the use of VPNs, which are also nearly extinct in local app stores.

The bot content on Twitter, which is thought to be government-connected, makes it even harder for Chinese citizens to organize demonstrations. As part of his massive layoff plan, Elon Musk abruptly axed Twitter’s anti-propaganda staff. That’s a stark contrast to 2019 when Twitter took down around 1,000 accounts that it determined were part of a state-directed effort to undermine protests in Hong Kong.

Chinese-language location-based escort ads aren’t new on the social media platform, but the frequency at which they are obscuring searches of Chinese cities in the last few days is unusual, as the data analyst noted:

This is also true when I search for 上海 (Shanghai).

Note that these are just a small sample of the search results — go and search 北京/上海 and you'll see new spam tweets come up every few seconds. So the number of spam accounts is way larger than a few hundred. pic.twitter.com/FhtX6N2mZV

    — Air-Moving Device (@AirMovingDevice) November 28, 2022

Twitter “was aware” of the spam issue and “was working to resolve it,” The Washington Post reported on Sunday evening, ET. And so should Musk be paying heed to the problem, given the billionaire was clearly concerned about Twitter bots, which prompted him to temporarily put the acquisition deal on hold in May. Of course, the world is still waiting to see how he plans to fix the issue after removing the key teams responsible for battling misinformation.

Too bad he fired almost all of the people that could have helped remove this shite. For a guy that wanted to rid Twitter of bots it's a shame he just didn't issue the staff with a new directive instead.

Oh well. Maybe he likes Twitter as a dumpster fire. It's his now afterall

I see Elon claiming that Apple is threatening to pull the app.  I haven't seen any response from Apple.  It seems that Apple has mostly stopped advertising on Twitter which is understandable.

It kind of seems that this is Elon reacting very badly to losing advertiser revenue because he insisted on unbanning people that advertisers want nothing to do with.

I wonder why none of those journalists are reporting on Twitter finally deleting child sex abuse material? At least Newsweek gave Eliza Bleu an op-ed https://www.newsweek.com/while-blue-checks-whine-about-extremism-elon-musk-protecting-sexually-exploited-children-opinion-1761383

Archive https://archive.ph/AwHow

I also wonder how people on the left are suddenly in favor of monopolies (or duopolies) if it somehow harms Elon Musk. Google and Apple have too much control over the flow of information. They have the power to kill websites. I'm not going to cheer them on when they use their power against people I disagree with. They've already used it against people I do agree with (it happened on the fediverse in 2020). If someone besides Elon Musk had purchased Twitter, these same people would be happy that a stunt cost a pharmaceutical company to lose money on the stock market. These same people wouldn't be hoping for Google and Apple  to remove the Twitter app, and they never called for it to happen when they've known that Twitter was used for selling CSAM.

I am a big fan of decentralizing the internet. That's one of the reasons I still post on forums, it's the reason I joined the fedi, but the reaction to Elon Musk has made me want him to succeed. He is making the right people angry. They are showing their true colors, I just wish normies could see it for what it is.

You've grown so much.

The whole global economy is slowing down, probably going into recession.  Corporations are slashing their advertising budgets anyway and the first places they pull from are the ones they consider marginal, like twitter.  Musk has made twitter even more of a marginal bet for them.   Especially since he told them quite how many bots were on the network....

If China pressures Elon Musk with Tesla, how is that any different than what Apple is already doing?  I feel like we should be paying attention to all these things, but for some reason it's treated like it could be so much worse if Elon Musk does it.

About the cp thing, I can't find a source for that. I've heard it brought up a few times in a few places but I haven't seen a news source on it.

Apple didn't claim to make free speech their mission statement. Elon did.

We definitely should be watching how corporate America reacts. Apple's interests are aligned with the Chinese government. That's very concerning. If these protests turn into revolts we may see companies like Apple pressuring our government to take a blind eye to it all.

Okay, but I'm having trouble understanding why it would be so much worse if Elon caves to the Chinese govt. I know he says he's a "free speech absolutist" and I get that's a dumb thing to say, but people (even bazillionaires) say dumb shit.

I found this https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/news/elon-musks-says-the-issue-of-child-sexual-exploitation-content-on-twitter-is-priority-1/articleshow/95668308.cms

Insider found that Twitter had removed most of the content using these hashtags, but there were still some tweets requesting CSE content.

For obvious reasons no one is posting the hashtags. I would like to know why Twitter didn't do something about this when they had a bloated staff. Twitter also made it easier to report CSAM since Elon took over.

That's not a lot to go by.  I'm just speculating but I'm guessing that trying to suppress cp on any platform is a cat and mouse game.  There's a hashtag.  Twitter deletes it.  Then another way to get around it.  Then Twitter blocks that somehow, etc.  Maybe eventually we'll get some research demonstrating that under Elon cp has decreased on Twitter. That currently doesn't seem to exist.

To be clear I don't have a reason to think that Elon caved to China on anything Twitter related.  Hypothetically if he did though, Twitter is the goto for somewhat disconnected likeminded people to connect quickly.  Such a service is crucial at the start of any resistance movement.  I believe the arab spring demonstrated that.

In other news, that whole business with Apple threatening to pull Twitter from the app store.  https://www.politico.com/news/2022/11/30/musk-cook-twitter-apple-app-store-00071521
Not a thing apparently.  No one knows how Elon got that idea.  Apple isn't commenting, obviously.  Elon isn't commenting on it.  It was just an idea that somehow appeared inside Elon's head seemingly without any basis in reality.

CSAM is difficult to keep off these big social media platforms (it's the reason Tumblr banned porn). In the past, for some reason, Twitter made reporting cp difficult. They also ignored people reporting their own CSAM. The lawsuits are still ongoing, I think Elon is going to have to deal with those, too.

I'm trying to remember, but there's also an NYT article about a woman who begged to have the video of her being raped taken off Twitter. They ignored her requests, and only took the video down when asked about it by Nicholas Kristof for his article. I think the video was up for something like 6 years.

I guess what I'm getting at, is that Twitter does not have a good track record of dealing with this issue. Blaming Elon Musk for it is weird, because he is making it a priority, or at least he says he is. I trust the anti CSAM activists when they say the hashtags were cleared, and I wonder why the media aren't covering it. I suspect they don't want to upset their audience by saying anything that reflects positively on Elon Musk.

From Forbes yesterday:

If Child Protection Is Musk’s ‘Top Priority,’ Why Is It So Easy To Find Users Selling Images Of Nude Minors On Twitter?

The hot take is Elon fired everyone who worked this issue and that abhorrent content is still readily available even given current efforts.

I don't know what is true and what isn't, but at least Forbes is reporting on it. And also mentions how some have praised recent efforts to purge content, yet still casting a shadow as to how Elon isn't doing enough.

To possibly answer the headline question, probably because it's impossible to rid platforms of such content given twitter's scale. Does FB have this problem?

No, child porn was never legally on Twitter (or any platform). It is a problem that websites have to deal with.

The article is a bunch of statistics and charts. It talks about the millions of accts banned and content deleted from all the big platforms. I can't copy and paste all that.
I'm sorry. Am I to understand that when you have a boner you like to imagine punching the shit out of Tom Bishop? That's disgusting.

Oh, nevermind then.
Well, Child porn is popular on sites like that as adults manipulate children into sending pictures of themselves (mostly places like snapchat that delete images after being opened)
Bascially, if there are any children, there is 1 pedophile who will try to manipulate the children on the site to send nudes or meet up with them (the child will think it's a person their age) and then proceed to rape and murder them.
The world is a terrible place.

Yes, Facebook has the same problem. There are lots of articles about it, but this one talks about all of them https://www.comparitech.com/blog/vpn-privacy/child-abuse-online-statistics/

It's all very depressing. The internet was a mistake!

I agree, it is depressing. The Great Library of Alexandria 2.0 has turned into a cesspool.

I don't think it quite works like that.  There's sexual predation on websites like you've described but I don't think that's Twitter or Facebook's main problem which I think is people trying to distribute and share cp.

One of the difficulties with combatting it is that it isn't bot driven, it's usually these teams of perverts.  And they've gotten good at evading AI so it takes human moderation to deal with them effectively.

The issue, which has been pointed out, more politiely and less direcrly than I would have is that CSAM has been on Twitter, Facebook and YouTube for a long time.

You don't actually care about the CSAM on Twitter. You care that people being able to speak may undermine the false authority you have convinced yourself you have over the world.
