I think i got a Virus
« on: September 23, 2018, 07:07:34 PM »
I`ve gotten microsoft update failures for about 3 weeks now, sorry I hope I didn`t compromise the site. I sent some pm`s too....
Every time I get updates, they say ``undoing changes`` at the end. Can anyone recommend a good course of action

My virus protection is bit defender, and updates for that have failed fro bout 3 weeks too. Just the other day I went to a youtube to mp3 site and downloaded something they offered to scan my computer. I think they called it a Microsoft update fix patch or something, which  I believed, and actually agreed it could make changes to my computer....oh Lord. I went back to the site after I installed it, and it was offering me adobe flash updates, so I think it was false. good thing is, my computer stopped just shutting down for the most part, no joke.

I wanna switch os to linux as well, but not really right now....
Any Help(question mark)

Thx

Try to work system Restore for an earlier time than you have uploaded that program.

Oh shit don't click those! These are always false. You definitely got malware from it. It's extremely unlikely that you will compromise the site, but now you should first try installing a free antivirus like Avast, scanning your computer and seeing if it can fix the issue. It probably will be able to, these scams don't typically use the most sophisticated malware around. If that doesn't work, you can buy a good antivirus or, better yet, ask an expert first.

If you have malware and you can't get rid of it try https://www.superantispyware.com/  I use the free one. It catches malware that Malwarebytes misses.

The best cure against viruses is common sense. You don’t even need an third party antivirus program. Windows Defender and Firewall are more than capable.

Yeah, I use Windows defender. I also use ublock origin which stops a lot of crap before I even see it.

I would use something more than just Windows Defender.

Avast is good, so is AVG for free Anti-Virus Software.

I would also recommend checking for Malware.  Not every Anti-Virus checks for or can remove it.

I use MalwareBytes for my personal computer.

https://www.malwarebytes.com/

As others have said, the best thing to do is follow common practice security standards:

1) Never download from a non-official source.

2) Never perform an update that doesn't come from official source site.  For example:  If you are getting a notification for Windows Update in anything outside of Windows Update, always check via the Windows Update utility built into Windows or navigate to the official website via the browser by typing the URL into the address bar.

3) Never use a link from an unknown source.  If you have suspicions about a link, copy the URL ink into notepad and look at it.  If it looks suspicious don't navigate to it.  If unsure navigate to the official parent site by yourself.

I theorise (largely uniformedly) that some of these virus' aren't  really doing anything harmful to my computer.

I meant uninformedly

1) Don't blame the OS. Sure, Windows seems like a big target for malware, and it is. But other OS's are susceptible to malware as well, and moving to another one doesn't fix the real issue.
2) The real issue is the end user ;) People click bad stuff. They are the weakest link in the security chain. Don't be like the people who click bad stuff. Be careful about the stuff you click.
3) You will still click bad stuff. Because you're a people. Get a decent AV. I like Sophos, but others have mentioned other options as well, and the great thing is that you can use many of them for free as a consumer. They update their definitions constantly, and have a proactive team of people playing double-agent on the internet to learn about new attacks before they explode.
4) Your AV isn't going to catch everything. So every once in a while, download a fresh, new, and different AV and use that to spot-check.

Be mindful of #4.  Some AVs will quarantine other AV Software as malware or a virus.

Thank you all. I gotta get a better idea of whats going on, there's some major probs. Like I said, my computer just turns off sometimes with a click noise....And I recall getting a msg bout me c drive corrupted, I think. Here's an example, on my main screen desktop I got no icons, just a bunch of shortcut (I think) icons for a buch of pix I put in a new folder about a month ago. And my pix always used to get swapped with internet avatars... sheesh, I don't know where to start with this thing.
I resisted update for like 2 yrs a couple of years ago. Because I didn't think they werenecessary, and it was pretty much fine until I started using my computer more. Besides it would give me limited options for installing updates, like now or 15 mins or some bs, I thought it was a virus. I've come to know and love the update, but now every time it try, did just now, it seems to load it all up and the undo the whole thing..

Oh yeah, Sophos is also good. I used to use it for my MacBook, I did occasionally get malware from torrents and Sophos was pretty effective in spotting them. But I also had Avast, just in case.

Yes, torrents... i'll try the sophos next, however the last ended me up with chrome installed on my computer, something I don't
