SMF Patch or Update??
« on: August 26, 2018, 01:18:10 PM »
Is SMF going to be updated?  The 2.0.15 patch has been out for almost a year.

I ask because I'm hoping the ridiculous notifications about posting within the last 30 seconds or duplicate post (when clearly the post isn't duplicate because it never actually posted) are fixed.

If not going to patch, are you guys looking into an alternative forum management system.  It wouldn't be hard to transition between, most forums allow you to export data and have similar DB sets so data can be used in another forum system.

The 30 second delay is intentional. Its a spam thing. If you're getting it even when you've waited 30 seconds then that's a bug.

I don't know for certain that this new version fixes that though. Does it mention it in the changelog?

I understand the delay, but I tend to get it when my last post wasn't 30 seconds ago.

From the SMF Website in regards to the patch.

I don't quite see any items that seem related to the 30 second bug.  Maybe I'm missing something.  Maybe boydster has some input on the matter.

I'm curious as to how prevalent this bug is.  I know myself and boydster have experienced it.

It may not be covered in the Patch, but it is best practice to keep up to date, especially when a security issue is found.  You don't want anyone to just hack the Admin account and change people's forum polls.

I get the same problems sometimes. I may have done a Preview just before, as you do.
And following "notifications about posting within the last 30 seconds" comes the "duplicate post (when clearly the post isn't duplicate because it never actually posted)" message.

We are a conservative society. Please do not mention such modern things. you are going to cause quite a stir among. And you know JD is busy with his young wife. Such things like download just causes waste of time.

Honesly, you don't want JD to do a download of the database and migrate it. Last time he lost at least 2 weeks of posts because he downloaded the database and then sat on it for some time.

He fixed it, though, no?  We lost 2 weeks for 24 hours or something like that.  Sorry he is not perfect, like Parsifal and Pizzaplanet.

His first reaction to it was basically "oh well". I came back, I don't care that much about it anymore. But it was an awful migration job and makes me weary of him doing another database migration.

Yeah, this pretty much.  It's not like hitting update in Chrome.  It's just as likely to break stuff as it is to fix stuff.

I feel that a better path towards fixing this 30 second issue is making changing permissions so that people with more than 100 or maybe 500 posts don't have that limit.

Well, we did catch him changing the version number without actually updating the software last time. At this point, who knows what's going on! You could still be running 2.0.6 for all we know

Yes. You murdered every single person on wise's list, including those marked as safe.

However, I don't see how this pertains to the fact that you're running a very old version of SMF.

To answer the serious concern, I'll try to get to it this weekend but obviously my worries are elsewhere forum wise. I never 'purposefully changed the version number', but it was saying the wrong version multiple times due to some smf shitiness and my own error.

Honesly, you don't want JD to do a download of the database and migrate it. Last time he lost at least 2 weeks of posts because he downloaded the database and then sat on it for some time.
I'm not sure of the history here, since I've slept a few times since then.

I now have a system developed to migrate the database seamlessly to as many environments as we want within a short period of time. It is not in production yet but I'm hoping to continue to make great strides this weekend. This proved difficult on earlier hosts due to the size of our database as well as the date of the data causing differences in encodings and what not across our long history as we migrated from platform to platform and version to version over many years and many different schemas, encodings, bbcode versions...; Also the time it would take the team and mostly myself in the past to perform such changes played a large part; my automation efforts are stoping this from ever being an issue again. On related notes, Boydster is working on a migration for a test environment that will help with our goals of anybody contributing whenever they want without breaking everything while they do it.

I don't want to be the person that has the final say here - its all of our homes, and we all should be able to take care of it if we should care to. I'm working with other members on a discrete plan to make this happen. I don't think some silly council of elders is the right path.

Nice to see you Duck Dodgers.

People really must have posted some gold those two weeks for it to be brought up what? Five years later? We've migrated to new hosts multiple times since then.

In the past we looked for solutions that could be managed by one person if everyone was hit by a bus. This lead to several poor host decisions that lead to outages that lead to outcries! I want this to be run by everyone, but lets still be smart about it.
