Confused
« on: June 01, 2018, 01:00:02 AM »
So if other planetary objects are observable as a sphere, what makes the earth flat? If these other objects are spherical, due to their mass and the existence of gravity, what makes the earth not spherical as well?

It's shape.

Why does a platypus lay eggs when all other mammals do not?

The echidna also lays eggs.

Yes, 2 species of echidna and 1 species of platypus. But no other mammals. Does that really change the point, though, that there can be exceptions to apparent rules based on observations?

Fair, but the overriding observation remains.

Yeah but when we are talking about the laws of physics, why are they broken for earth? What made the earth flat. I think that’s a pretty empty answer given to me.

Why do we assume the rules are broken for Earth?

If basketballs are round does it follow that the basketball court is round?

Well I'll explain. Every other object over a certain amount of mass that we have observed in the universe is consistent with the same spherical shape. So in our solar system, every other object with a large quantity of mass displays the EXACT same physical characteristic as the other.. except Earth? I don't see how that makes any sense? Somewhere along the lines, circumstances have to obey constants.

You're using such a trivial metaphor and if you want me to be nit picky such as yourself, I could easily go on to state that you're not even using correct references. First of all, the basketballs are round, and they are planets. Yes, all the basketballs are round. The basketball court is not round, no.. it is the universe. Please don't post useless answers.

I'm not gathering opponents here. I'm simply trying to understand. I come to the Q&A section to get answers, not debate. Yet all the answers are get.. are not really answers are they?

Think of it like a scatter diagram, there are often anomalies and in this instance, the Earth is that anomaly.

I would be one to argue we don't know what shapes the other so called planets are. We have not traveled to them. Nor do we have the ability to observe them in a way where we understand more about them. I could argue that the universe as we know it debunks the big bang theory. IF there was a big bang then in a frictionless environment, the universe would all spin in one direction. Yet they don't. There are many false laws that are not absolute. Just like gravity.

Actually it's the opposite of that.
