You mean tides? Tides aren't caused by Earth's gravity in either model.

he kinds of equations that they have now are the kinds of equations you would get in an approximation scheme to some underlying theory, but nobody knows what the underlying theory is.

Don't you know that the Earth's gravity also has the ability to REPEL mass, too, because of its amazing fantasticitude? It's so amazingly magical that it can do whatever it wants and pushes tides up on a regular schedule, just to piss silly mortals off.
