Well, it's basically the same as with clothes, body ideals and everything else. Whatever the main stream beauty ideal is, lot's of people will try to reach it (often just to realize that the beauty ideal has already changed and/or that it does not make them any happier).

In my opinion is ethically questionable to perform any not medically needed operations, because there are lot's of possible complications/risks with every operation, but whatever.

But being males, no one dares give a shit or outraged when it gets done for religious or 'cosmetic' reasons. I find the circumcision of boys to be just as abhorrent as the circumcision of girls. But the fact no one gives a shit when mutilation happens to us as babies must be part of this 'male privilege' I hear so much about!

There are lots of people who get their boys circumcised because they think they're supposed to, like medically necessary. My mom did not know that it was promoted in the US by Kellogg to stop boys from masturbating. She thought it was for better health.  Now that we have the internet, and information like that is easily accessed maybe unnecessary operations on babies will go out of fashion.

I think there are a few health benefits as well.

I mean, it's a flap of skin that makes it harder to clean and stuff, and there's pretty much no difference in pleasure etc from what I've read when people have had adult circumcisions. I don't see the big deal. Just makes it look nicer and keeps it cleaner. Plus there are some weird problems you can develop with foreskin which I would rather not have, no mater what the chances. I'm glad I'm circumcised.

The big deal is that it's (and was routinely) done to babies who were given no choice. They are robbed of the right to choose and consent what happens to their body. The whole infection thing and hygiene thing is mostly a myth. Whether or not other people report and say 'I feel no difference' is beside the point. It is a violation. It is also alarming when developed countries put their ideals onto developing countries. Yes, we have medical professionals and sterilised and purpose built instruments that minimises the risk of infection, amputation or death. Not so lucky for a 3rd world country where they may use a rusty knife based on some false ideology in a 1st world country

I can remember when I was circumcised. It's really not that big of deal. I didn't like the pain but it didn't last long and I really liked the attention from the doctors and nurses. Over all it was a positive experience. I agree that if it can't be done in a clean facility with proper equipment it shouldn't be done at all. For me it had nothing to do with religion.
