Most ridiculous thing a FEer has said to prove a flat earth
« on: October 30, 2017, 04:12:05 PM »
I recently had somewhat of a debate with a flat earther and he claimed he performed an experiment in which he proved the earth was flat to  himself and therefore could use the same experiment to prove it to others.  So, here it goes.

This individual, we will call him "Mike" for this post, claimed he took a 100lb test fishing line 1 mile in length across a glass still like.  Each end of the fishing line was attached to a piece of rebar which was pounded 1 foot into SAND.  According to him he put each end of the fishing line 8 inches above the water.  He claims to have had that line so tight that there was zero sag in the middle which he was able to allegedly confirm by getting into a ROWBOAT and measuring the line at 8 inches above the water and somehow not disturb the water or the boat to get an accurate measurement.  He claims that because he was able to measure 8 inches on each end and 8 inches in the middle that this proves that the earth is flat.  My argument to him is that there is no way that 1 mile of string would not sag, i dont care how tight you get it because of this little thing call gravity.  Second, because he used rebar into SAND, there is no way that the rebar would be solid enough to put tension of any kind of this line.  Third, he later had to admit that the measurement he actually got in the middle was not 8 inches but less and that he rounded up to 8.  I asked him to provide a video of his experiment and post it up on youtube but as you might have guessed, he has posted no such video.  No doubt this is not the wackiest thing heard from a FEer, but I think for entertainment purposes it would be fun to hear what other ridiculously crazy things that a FEer has said in an attempt to prove a flat earth.

I think for entertainment purposes it would be fun to hear what other ridiculously crazy things that a FEer has said in an attempt to prove a flat earth.

There's a book which is basically a compilation of insane FE pronouncements.
It's called "Earth Not A Globe" by Samuel Rowbotham.

Over the years Tom Bishop  has claimed to have repeat all of the experiments in Earth not a Globe. Which is strange because he has also claimed to have preformed material st, some, and a few of them as well. He can never make up his mind.

Sceptitank claims to have preformed a laser experiment the prove the earth is flat. He will not post any evidence from the experiment though. He prefers just to piss his pants when you ask.

Here's an improvement on that idea, although Rabinoz says there is still way too much room for error. Fasten a floating fishline to solid anchor points below the surface of a swamp or some very still body of water. Stretch it very tight and measure the distance between the submerged line and the surface of the water. If the earth is flat, the distance should be less in the middle. If it's round the distance should be more.

Easy answer. Mike is lying and has never done any experiment like that!

So sorry, it would be a nice experiment, but you simply cannot stretch anything tight enough over such a long distance.

As far as I know, apart from carbon fibre, the fibre with the best strength/weight ratio is Dyneema - The world's strongest fiber.

You can buy in many forms such as rope for the sheets on sailing boats from places like Brisbane Ropes & Splicing, Dyneema.
It is very hard to believe,
but even an 0.02" dia Dyneema fishing line stretched with a tension of 100 lbs (near its breaking strength of 110 lbs) has a sag of 4' 6" over a 1 mile span.
And the Globe has a bulge of only 2" over a mile, that is each end is only 2" below the centre!

The diameter of the line makes no difference, as the weight and strength increase at the same rate. The Globe is huge!

The sag was calculated by, SpaceAge Control, Displacement Cable Sag Error Calculator

Such a pity, but the Globe really has very little curvature.

But if you used a near neutral buoyancy line underwater there wouldn't be 9.8N/Kg force on it like there is with a suspended line.

Even in fresh water the ideal sag is still about 2.8", but the slightest bit of current would deflect the cable.
Maybe you could put it in a one-mile long transparent tube.

Of, course essentially this sort of thing has been done, though accidentally with gamma rays.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
But, while few question it, some might forget the earth's being a Globe to their peril, as in this little very relevant anecdote:
Quote
There was one particularly amusing part of this bomb test experiment involving a dozen two-mile-long vacuum pipelines necessary to accurately view the device from far enough away to save the recording equipment from the expected blast.

“When six of us young physicists arrived in Bikini several months before the test, but after an immense effort by thousands working for the contractor Holmes and Narver, we found that the gamma rays from a radioactive test source wouldn’t pass through the vacuum pipelines for a distance of two miles.

After a few of the “juvenile young scientists” straightened one pipe line using a special telescope, Colgate recalls being awakened that night by another still younger engineer, who showed him the corrections.

“I took one look, calculated the geometry, and said out loud so everyone in the tent could hear, ‘Oh my God, they forgot that the earth is round!’ ” he said.

For gamma rays to get through, the pipes had to be straight, not level with the ground. The next day at a management meeting, Colgate reassured everyone that there would be no recriminations, but at the end he joked,

“The one thing we young scientists would like is a small correction . . . . . . ”

From: Meet Dr. Stirling Colgate, Iconic Tech President
Yes, the 2 miles of carefully "levelled" pipe was "locally levelled", but not straight. In 2 miles there is a "bulge" of 8 inches. Not much, but enough to stop the gamma rays from reaching the target.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

I know this topic has been discussed on this site ad nauseum but, one of the best thing that FEers do is DENY.  Nonstop flights to/from citys in the southern hemisphere is one of the easiest ways to prove the earth is in fact round.  When discussing this with some FEers, they simply deny these flights even exist.  Or, maybe a specially configured 747 that can fly 2.5 mach, or maybe all the passengers were drugged, or maybe the flights exist and then minutes before departure time the flight is always cancelled.  When round earthers have you cornered...DENIAL is the second best thing to the truth.

When I first started looking into flat earth claims, I came across a video by some guy talking about souther hemisphere flights. So fella opens a flight booking site and searches for flights from Sydney to Santiago. A list of flights pop up and at the top of the list are some direct flights. Fella goes "here we see some direct flights from Sydney to Santiago. I don't believe these flights exist. I think they are just there to throw us off bla bla bla" or some such. Can you just imagine? Didn't try to see if the flight exists or not. Didn't try to make a booking himself. Worse, a few posts in the comments section were from people who said they had taken those flights themselves and the fella just goes "LIAR. SHILL. AGENT OF THE OPPRESSOR" . That is the flat earth movement for you. As long as a fact does not rhyme with their "beliefs" and it is a belief, it must be a lie. It must be denied. And those that espose those facts are evil. Go through the post on memes on this forum and see what flat earthers really think of those who do not go along with their nonsense.

I know someone that wanted to do this, and assuming the line has 0 sag, it should be 2 inches closer to the ground in the middle, if it's equal distance to the ground across, it's flat, if it's farther away from the ground at the center, it's concave.

I know someone that wanted to do this, and assuming the line has 0 sag, it should be 2 inches closer to the ground in the middle, if it's equal distance to the ground across, it's flat, if it's farther away from the ground at the center, it's concave.

Keep in mind he said he stretched this line over a MILE... and he somehow was able to insure there was zero drop in the middle... Sounds like a hot pile of something that a Bull left behind...
I thought it was a good concept, but didn't think anyone has been able to do it.
Good concept ,  but too many "if's" involved to make it practical or possible IMHO.
It might work "if" every thing was perfect.
Using a laser beam instead of the fishing line ?

it is clear that nobody can do this setup for a simple reason: a material does not exist that you can stretch that there is not drop.

you don't let roundies post in your "FE's Only" Thread

I could only imagine the party in there  (I'm doing this as hard as I can)  ::)

I don't have an "FE's Only" Thread.
I'm sorry. Am I to understand that when you have a boner you like to imagine punching the shit out of Tom Bishop? That's disgusting.

I have had conversations with Mr. Bishop on tfes.org.  This man will say whatever it is he feels like he needs to say, regardless of how asinine it may be, to deflect from any factual argument being presented against his pseudoscience.  The end result is that he always runs away from the conversation, and then engages in the next one as if the previous one never happened.  He is either a scam artist or is suffering from severe delusions.

You do realise a much better item to use, rather than a string, is a laser beam? No dip there.

If he claimed that, then he was telling a blatant lie!

I don't have an "FE's Only" Thread.
But there is the Flat Earth Believers Forum where only "Flat Earth Believers" like:
JRoweSkeptic, İntikam, AltSpace, Tom Bishop, Marciano and sandokhan can post.

And I imagine that you could post there if you wished.

I can post anywhere.

Anyway, you don't have to imagine what is posted in that section of the forum, you can read it yourself. You all know that not much goes on there.
