Bigger sun with sunset
« on: October 10, 2017, 12:58:01 PM »
Hi i am new here, i have i question for you flatearthers.

How do you explain that the sun appears bigger with sunset?
The answer on this from planet earth is, This is because the sun's image is refracted by the Earth's atmosphere.

If the earth is flat, would the sun not getting smaller, because it moves further away from us?

Yes and the flat earthers have no satisfactory explanation for it. They try:
  • Quote from: The FlatEarth Society Wiki
    Magnification of the Sun at Sunset
    Q. If the sun is disappearing to perspective, shouldn't it get smaller as it recedes?

    A. The sun remains the same size as it recedes into the distance due to a known magnification effect caused by the intense rays of light passing through the strata of the atmosphere.

    From: Magnification of the Sun at Sunset.
    But even when a solar filter is used, the angular size of the sun stays almost exactly constant.

    There is a keen Flat Earther, Matrix Decode who take good photos and videos. have a look at:

    Flat Earth - The Size Of The Sun, Matrix Decode
    ]
    Flat Earth - The Size Of The Moon, Matrix Decode
    where he concludes with: "The moon appears to remain the same size from 9.30 PM to 6 AM".

  • Then they try heavy refraction causing a lens effect due to the high water vapour content of the atmosphere.
    See
    ]
    Flat Earth and Atmospheric Magnification (short version), Rob Skiba
    and

    Does the atmosphere solve "the problem of sunsets" on a flat Earth? Rob Skiba

  • And some here claim "atmoplanic lensing" without really defining it. Presumably its something like the above effect.
See what you think!

I'm just going to quote my explanation since I'm getting sick of re writing it each time ;/
The sun and moon are further than in your diagrams. This is the best artist rendition I've seen to date of what our true earth looks like. Except water doesn't fall off the side of it and these are extremely thick and high walls of permafrost in the Antarctic that protect the disk earth from losing it's water. It is also unknown what is actually underneath these huge Antarctic ice walls, and is most likely something else that protects us. There is also a slight curve to the disk earth due to the footing of the elephants on the turtle which should be obvious since a shell is curved to begin with. Which I also mentioned in another thread. The sun and moon revolve around the disk but also alternate in height in back and forth cycles.

But I can't see how the Discworld helps in the question of a "Bigger sun with sunset".
Besides, the "Bigger sun with sunset" is just an illusion. See

They alternate in height through seasons and days while held in orbit around the turtle.

Might  work for Discworld, but not on the real world.

How do you explain that the sun appears bigger with sunset?

You probably won't get a scientifically persuasive answer form the flat earthers...  try this from a RE.

That the sun appears larger when it is on the horizon is simply an optical illusion. The brain thinks that objects on the horizon should be farther away than objects overhead; since the sun is the same apparent size in both places, the brain concludes that it's physically bigger when it's on the horizon, and thus tricks you into thinking that the angular diameter is greater than when it's overhead. This phenomenon is known as the Ponzo Illusion—and occurs for the Moon as well.

Example of Ponzo Illusion
The distant red line appears to be around twice the length
of the nearer red line when in actuality they're identical.
