You need a finely tuned bullshit detector and a skeptical attitude,  some things are obvious lies and easily dismissed,  some things are half truths,  and contain a plausible combination of lies and truth.  Then there are things that are true, but misrepresented or heavily spun to favour some predetermined bias.
