The joys of living in a farm town.
« on: May 23, 2017, 04:00:14 PM »
Saturday, 9:00pm:

Cat #1 runs in from the dog door with something in it's mouth.

House status is upgraded to possible mouse intrusion.

Cat #1 releases what was previously thought to be a mouse.

House status is upgraded to possible bird intrusion.

Cat #1 loses interest.  Cat #2 stairs ahead stupidly.  Cat #3 resumes the hunt.

Flying creature starts circling.

House status is upgraded to definite bat intrusion.

Cat #3 apprehends said bat and escorts it from the property.

Monday:

Consulted the vet.  Turns out there's a small risk of rabies.  So they have to be quarantined, for 45 days.  The quarantine zone is right outside of my home office.  I have a fun night ahead of me watching youtube videos of cats with rabies and studying the symptoms so I know what to look for.  It's very interesting and unsettling at the same time.

Wow...

I really have nothing further to say to that.

I was raised in shit kicker country off the lake, but we had no bats there. Though an occasional run in with rabies unfortunately, it's not pleasant.

Did cat 3 kill the bat? Might be easier to take it in and test it for rabies if you can. Be easier on you and your kitties

Hopefully the cats will be alright. I remember putting a bat I found on a tree in a jar when I was a kid and my mom freaked out about rabies, lol.
I'm sorry. Am I to understand that when you have a boner you like to imagine punching the shit out of Tom Bishop? That's disgusting.

Unfortunately cat #3 took off with the bat into the night where it was never seen again. The cats have this odd arrangement where they capture small critters and feed them to the border collie we have. I think they worship her as a God or something.

I'm not too worried. The cats were vaccinated but two of them had vaccinations that were out of date. Rabies deaths in North America are exceptionally rare. But still I'm going to have some very angry couped up cats for the next 6 weeks. If one of them starts walking funny then it's going to be a very dramatic day.

Hold on, what?

It's to identify the symptoms of rabies.  There's actually quite a lag between when you get bitten by something rabid and when it starts to show.  The virus doesn't do much in the blood stream.  It has to catch a nerve.  From there it slowly makes its way to the brain stem.  Slowly being the keyword.  It works out to be something like 3mm a day.  At that point symptoms start to show which is about the same time that it become contagious.

Yeah, it's just that it sounds pretty funny out of context. Actually, you're one of the best people here to quote out of context (look at my sig).
