Moon phases
« on: March 05, 2017, 09:45:11 PM »
Hi everyone,

So I am new here but I have something I'd like to try. I've been reading that the moon phases are actually opposite in the northern hemisphere and the Southern Hemisphere and that websites are manipulated depending on your location in the world to show that the phases are the same all over the world. Is there anyone in the Southern part of the world that would be willing to test it out with me? For example - a full moon here in the north would be a new moon in the south and vice versa. Thanks everyone :)

I know you're looking for people in the Southern Hemisphere but just for the record I'm in the Northern Hemisphere looking at the moon right now and I can confirm that it matches its published phase of being slightly more than half full (waxing, which I can tell because the bright side is to the celestial west).

It would be very surprising if people in the Southern Hemisphere somehow failed to notice that the moon didn't match the phase that it's supposed to have, but I suppose it doesn't hurt to get confirmation.

Edited to add: it occurs to me that this confusion may have arisen in part because, although the phase of the moon does not vary with location, its orientation does, which can seem "opposite" when the moon is partially full (especially when it is half full). Right now it is waxing, which, as I said above, means the bright side is to the celestial west, but the direction of celestial west relative to up/down and left/right from the moon varies with latitude and longitude and time. For me, the moon is past its apex and approaching setting and I am in the Northern Hemisphere, so the bright side is down and to the right when looking at the moon. In the Southern Hemisphere near my longitude, it would be down and to the left. When the moon is rising, celestial west is upward from the moon.

I live in the Southern Hemisphere and know that this is not true. It's the same moon illuminated by the same sun.
No, moon phases in the Southern Hemisphere are exactly the same as in the Northern Hemisphere.
This a photo taken about 45 minutes ago to compare with the phase you see at present

March 06, 2017 16:29 EAST 8.3 days old, 60% Waxing Gibbous
It was still bright daylight, sunset won't be till 6:14 PM, so the contrast is not very high.

We see the moon inverted compared to in the Northern Hemisphere because we look north to see the moon but people on the Northern Hemisphere look south.

Edit: I noticed your addition after I posted. Yes, it's the same phase, and almost exactly the same face, but a different orientation.

Although the moon is in the east and the bright side is up and to the left, which is what would be expected in Australia on a round Earth as the moon is in the west and the bright side is down and to the right for me in San Francisco. I have to conclude that your photo is a fake because your caption says March 6, when it is still only 11:42 on March 5, as I type this.  :P

You should wind them occasionally.

Your clocks are the ones that are slow! It's your calendars that are too fast!

Also, now I that I double check, I notice that it's not March 5, but March 6, so I retract my claim about your photo being fake. I don't know why I thought it was March 5, I must have been confused.

Of course, we get the day when it is quite new and fresh, with only New Zealand getting it first.
A little country like that doesn't use up much of the day, but you don't get it till it's 20 hours old and almost worn out!
Just look at the skies in LA, no sunlight left in the day, in San Francisco, it is foggy most of the day and in Seattle, weather forecasts are easy, if it's not raining, it's either snowing or going to rain.

See, the day is all worn out before you even get a look at it.

No wonder there are so many Flat Earthers in the USA, they are so confused by the sun that they can't get its movement right.

You need to be careful, if you get much more confused with your worn out days and you might turn into a flat earther too, and we can't have that.

Besides, I like doughnuts.

Well, that's my theory and I'm stickin' to it - till a better offer comes along.

hey...you are all joking (including me at first) but I stumbled on this article this mornig:
http://www.bibliotecapleyades.net/tierra_hueca/esp_tierra_hueca_33.htm
or google simply "polar openings" or something
So we may have holes on our poles...
If this article is true...the Earth actually IS A LARGE DONUT.

Shalom and welcome to the forum.
The Bible doesn't support a flat earth.

Scripture, facts, science, stats, and logic is how I argue.
