Gleason's New Standard Map of the World
« on: January 22, 2017, 05:07:29 PM »
Just for the information of Flat Earthers.

I had been under the impression that "Gleason's map is the New Standard Map of the World" was simply a version of the
"North Polar Equidistant Azimuthal Projection of the Globe".

It is certainly based on it, but was specifically produced by Alex. Gleason as his Flat Earth map.

I have a copy and the text on it reads:
GLEASON’S
NEW STANDARD MAP OF THE WORLD
ON THE PROJECTION OF J. S. CHRISTOPHER,
MODERN COLLEGE, BLACKHEATH, ENGLAND
SCIENTIFICALLY AND PRACTICALLY CORRECT
AS “IT IS”

You will note that it says "ON THE PROJECTION OF J. S. CHRISTOPHER"
and is certainly a North Polar Equidistant Azimuthal Projection of the Globe.

I have recently found that Alex. Gleason was a civil engineer who most certainly believed in a Flat Earth and produced what we now call "Gleason's Map" as his version of the AEP map (as in Rowbotham's ENaG).

Alex. Gleason wrote a couple of books, "Is the Bible from Heaven" and "Is the Earth a Globe" that can be downloaded as one PDF scanned documet from:

And this is a link to a 4773 x 6794 pixel version of it:

But, I have no more information on "J. S. Christopher, Modern College, Blackheath, England" or of "Morden College".
Nevertheless, whatever his credentials, J. S. Christopher seems to have produced a quite accurate projection of the globe.

1892-new-standard-map-of-the-world

As far as I am concerned, all this does is to validate Gleason's Map as a Flat Earth map
                      - that was it's intention and it is really just a far more accurate version of the "Ice Ring" map that most people use.

I realize this thread has been dormant for some time, but here is some information  I recently obtained from Morden College in Blackheath,  England in an exchange of e-mails.:
"Modern" is a common mis-spelling for "Morden"
Morden College is a  "Collegiate Type  Institution" ,  but not in the sense of being a University or College.
Morden College was established in 1700 by Sir John Morden, a wealthy merchant,  as "A Charity Home for Retired Merchants who have lost tneir estates" for those merchants who had fallen on hard times.

Morden College said they searched their files and found the following information on "J.S. Christopher". :
J.(Joseph) S.(Streep) Christopher was a resident of Morden College until his death in the 1890's.
He was a retired merchant, apparently living in poverty until accepted for residency in Morden College.
Morden College could find no records for connections of Christopher with Gleason.
They could not find any connections with Christopher for map making.
Or any other special interests for that matter.
Christopher was listed as only a retired merchant, living under the conditions listed above in his application for residency.

It is interesting that Gleason labeled the map as  "the world as it is" and  "scientifically and practically correct" rather than mentioning or citing it as being based on the AEP.

Morden College continues today as a retirement home."For over 300 years".
It appears that present day residents cover a broader range than just the original requirements of "Retired Merchants who have lost their estates."

Perhaps Christopher, living in England, might have been a distant friend or distant relative of Gleason, living in America, who had an interest or hobby in maps besides his job as a merchant and shared his interest in the flat earth with Gleason ?
Christopher might have also been a follower of Rowbotham ?

I would have to go back over my notes for the particulars, but Morden College has a letter in their files from one the Trustees of Morden College which asks "Is there a resident at Morden College who believes that the earth is flat ? Surely not Mr.Christopher ? "

"Gleason's map" was patented, not as a map but as a time calculator, see Re: If the earth is flat, then why... « Reply #105 on: October 04, 2017, 12:19:17 PM »

And I am certain that the " 'the world as it is' and  'scientifically and practically correct' " refer to its use as a time calculator, not as any new map.

No question about it being patented as a time calculator, but the following do seem questionable.:
"New Standard Map Of The World"
"A Projection Of J.S. Christopher"
"Modern College, Black Heath, England"
Was he claiming all this was true, in addition to it being a time calculator ?

Yes, I think you've hit the nail on the head.

Alexander Gleason was certainly an ardent flat-earther and I have my suspicions that he had a ulterior motive in patenting the "map" as a time calculator. Imagine his reception at the patent office if he were to front up and try to patent a projection of the Globe thousands of years old as a new flat earth map!
Quote from: Wikipedia
Azimuthal equidistant projection
History

While it may have been used by ancient Egyptians for star maps in some holy books, the earliest text describing the azimuthal equidistant projection is an 11th-century work by al-Biruni.

The projection appears in many Renaissance maps, and Gerardus Mercator used it for an inset of the north polar regions in sheet 13 and legend 6 of his well-known 1569 map. In France and Russia this projection is named "Postel projection" after Guillaume Postel, who used it for a map in 1581. Many modern star chart planispheres use the polar azimuthal equidistant projection.
But, he could get away with patenting it as a time calculator.

Flat Earth: Book by Alex Gleason (Download PDF), Antarctic Warrior
And take a look at: 1893 Gleason Is the Bible from Heaven, is Earth A globe? Flat Earth zetetics
You can download it as 1893 Gleason Is the Bible from Heaven, is Earth A globe? - but it's probably 8.5 MB vasted space!

But it certainly looks as though it was intended as The Flat Earth Map to end all flat earth maps!

Alexander Gleason is another that conflates "Flat Earth" and "Scripture".

True. It was patented as a time calculator, but these are what I consider questionable.
"The New Standard MAP of the world." Doesn't he claim it to be a new map of the world ?
"A Projection of....." Why did he claim this instead of citing the North Polar AEP as the source of the map ?
"....... J.S. Christopher " Knowing what we know about J.S. Christopher (at least from information from Morden College), why did he claim this ?
".......Modern College, Blackheath, England"  Knowing what we know about Morden College in Blackheath, England why did he
use this ?

He patented it only as a "time calculator" only, so he could get away with the above because he wasn't claiming to be  patenting
 them ?
I'm still curious about "J.S. Christopher" and "Modern" College. LOL.

It would be interesting if some flat earther would contribute something relavent to and sensible to this subject.

The reasons for my  curiosity about "J.S.Christopher" and "Modern College"are .:

(1)We do do know that Alexander Gleason was a flat earth believer ; that he was a Civil Engineer ; that (I believe) he lived in Akron, Ohio in the United States.

(2)But we know little about J.S. Christopher, other than he was most likely a retired merchant, living in Morden College, a charity retirement home in the Blackheath section of London, England, in the United Kingdom.

(3)Nor do we know what connections J.S. Christopher had (if any) with Alexander Gleason nor Map Projections.

To rabinoz :
This may be another "relavent to what ?"  ;D .
And you can probably call it just an obsession of mine. ;D
But I am still curious about the connection on Gleason's map with " From a Projection of"  , "J.S. Christopher" , and "Modern College". ???

The only things I have come up with is this information from Morden College.:
"Modern" is a common mis-spelling of Morden.
Morden College is located in the Blackheath section of London, England and was established in 1700 by Sir John Morden (apparently a wealthy merchant himself) as a charity home for "retired merchants who have lost their estates" for those less fortunate as himself who had fallen on hard times through no fault of their own.
Morden College is still active as a retirement home "For over 300 years" and apparently is open to all now, not just ".....retired merchants who are single, widowers or  bachelors with a minimum age of 50........"
Joseph Streep Christopher was a resident of Morden College about the same time as Gleason's map.

Do you or any other readers of this post have any information or ideas about this ?
