The truth is that's a great picture of the moon passing the earth as taken from millions of miles away.   Can you explain what you are seeing that I'm obviously missing?

did you see how small the earth was while they were on the moon? also, there are videos out there that show that the earth as actually pasted on the sky.

I've seen those videos, and they are bogus,  whoever did them just didn't understand compression artifacts.   The earth is NOT pasted in the sky.

I don't know Rayzor...I'm not saying you are wrong, But I went and looked at a bunch of compression artifacts examples on google images and none of them looked like what your video showed. They all looked pasted on because the colors were much different.

And in every one they use a compressed jpeg image as "proof".  They never seem to go look at the uncompressed hi res images.

I'm no expert on this stuff. I watched Rayzor's video and the images looked like they were inserted or pasted in and I went to Google images and searched on compression artifacts and what I say didn't look like what Rayzor's video showed. They look a lot different to me.

The images from Apollo showing Earth have the Earth just the size it should be for the lens used.  The Earth should take up about 2 degrees from the moon and when you look at the field of view for the images that is just about what it takes up.  The images taken from millions of miles away are zoomed in and also show the Earth and Moon as they should with that lens.

Don't believe that a simple lens difference can affect the apparent size of objects in the frame?
The truck and barn in the following photo never move.  Only the lens changes. 


It should be obvious that the Earth can appear different sizes depending on the lens used.

All it proves is that "DarkSkyWatcher74" is either completely ignorant of perspective or is deliberately trying to deceive - take you pick!

I have shown below a photo taken from the Apollo8 command module orbiting the moon (a much better photo than in the video) and a frame from the video you showed.
Now in the left photo, the moon is only a few hundred kilometres away while the earth is about 396,000 km away^[1], so of course the earth looks much small that the moon.

In the right photo the moon is only about 604,000 (1,000,000 - 394,000 km) away while the earth is about 1,000,000 km away^[2], so the earth and moon look closer to the right proportions.


Someone in the position of "DarkSkyWatcher74" has an obligation to be correct. What he is doing in this video is slandering numerous people either through complete ignorance or straight or dishonesty!

Surely he has a "duty of care" to be correct and honest, and I am totally sick of these completely incorrect and misleading videos on Youtube!

[2]XX	for the DSCOVR EPIC photo the apparent size of moon is about atan(moon diam/distance) or about 0.33° and the apparent size of earth is about atan(earth diam/distance) or about 0.73° - about the ratio expected.

Distance from EPIC to the Moon: 1.5 million km - 384,400 km = 1.1 million km (to two significant figures; 1.5 million km is an approximation). Distance from EPIC to the Earth: 1.5 million km. Distances Moon:Earth 1.1:1.5 = about 3:4.

Accepted mean diameters of the earth and moon are 12,742 km and 3,476 km, respectively, so earth:moon = 12,742 km:3,476 km = 3.7:1

Since the Earth is almost 4 times larger (3.7 more accurately) but is about 4/3 times as far away, the apparent size of the Moon will be (4/3 X 1/3.7) = 0.36 times, about 10% more than 1/3, the size of the Earth from 1.5 million km away.

In the image, the Moon is a little over 1/3 the apparent diameter of the Earth, as expected. Please scale this from the screenshot from the video to verify this if you don't believe it. Use your own image from the video if you want.

If the astronaut is 2 meters tall but 100,000,000 times closer than the Earth, and the diameter of the Earth is 12,742 km, a 2-meter tall astronaut from almost 4 meters away would appear to be 2 m /12,742,000 m X 100,000,000 = about 16 times as tall as the apparent diameter of the Earth.
