It's a cynical theory but it does seem to fit the facts and explain some very odd behavior.
One year into this administration and if you strip away Trump's embarrassing behavior and culture war nonsense then not a whole lot has changed. We still have massive tax cuts for the rich. We still have a border policy that's cruel and simultaneously ineffective. The democrats passed covid relief. Trump also passed covid relief.
There's an infrastructure bill. It's good I guess. But if we set the standard of governing at not giving kids lead poisoning then it's hard to be excited by it.
Then there's this social infrastructure or whatever they call it bill that I'm pretty sure is now dead since progressives gave up their only leverage because they were spooked by Virginia.
Judging by these last few years the main substantive difference between the two parties is that currently the Republicans want to erode democracy enough to keep winning.
