In your brain, which in your case is incased in a very very minimal amount of cerebral fluid (explains alot), you view the exhaust gas as pushing out against something and blasting it's way through space.

However in reality, the exhaust gas does not "move" out of the  tail. The rocket is actually moving, the chemical reaction is not, for lack of better words. It is more of a pressure change than an explosion. This is why combustion areas and the upper crown is the most important, most researched, and most redesigned part of a rocket. With second being injection method.

In theory a rocket engine is more efficient in a vacuum than in an atmospheric condition.

No contradictions as long as you're using the right terminology.  The gasses don't become exhaust until after they leave the rocket engine and are free expand into the environment.  While the gasses are still within the rocket engine, they are still considered combustion gasses that are acting (pushing) against the inside of the combustion chamber and bell.  In fact, I think that I've been pretty consistent in referring them to combustion gasses while they are within the rocket engine.
