Would shadows disprove flat earth?
« on: February 02, 2016, 11:00:15 AM »
I tend towards spheroid earth but I'm open to the idea of flat earth if there's proof.  :)

At any rate, I was just thinking...when the sun is in the east, just rising, the shadows of trees and the like are longer and point to the west, and as the sun moves (yes I'm a geocentrist), the shadows get shorter, then start pointing to the east.

If the earth is flat and the sun acts like a spotlight, would it have the same effect on the shadows?  I would think not.

As far as I am aware, the FE doesn't even explain the observed movement of the sun over the sky without a whole lot of special pleading.

The light already needs to follow a very specific path when coming directly from the sun, and only then, and only in the morning/evening, in order to explain observations. I suppose once you have this many exceptions, you can explain the shadows just fine  ;)

There are a lot of issues with the behaviour of the Sun. Most FEers seem to appeal to alternative forms of light (bendy light is a cliche), so I wouldn't expect this to disprove anyone's model. I expect the same refraction that explains how the Sun sets bottom-up at the horizon rather than fades into the distance could be applied.
