AXIS OF EVIL
« on: January 10, 2016, 09:02:29 AM »
Is anyone familiar with some studies conducted over the last fifty years incorporating data confirmed by three different satellites cobe wmap and most recently, planck.
Respected scientists  interpreting data are describing hotspots in the cosmic microwave background that indicate  a perfectly uniform (not random) spinning  universe at the exact centre of which sits a stationary earth, the findings have been dubbed the "axis of evil" by scholars who wish the data would go away because apparently it proves Copernicus was wrong and sets what is known about the earth back 500 years
Has anyone else heard about this "axis of evil" it sounds a bit interesting.

How could the CMB (cosmic microwave background) have anything to do with if the planet is spining. The CMB is radiation from soon after the big bang.

i have no idea thats why i asked if anyone else had heard of it,  i presume you have or you wouldn't have replied to my post, i'd be a bit interested to read what your views are regarding the implications of the so called axis of evil on the Copernican principle as a whole

To answer your questions directed to 'anyone': I've heard of them, and yes.

FE fantasists wont be able to use the proofs because satellites don't exist. however I look forward to laughing at this, got a link?

Have you got a link to somewhere that mentions it. I have heard that the CMB being uniform caused a problem, but that's because the CMB comes from 13 billion light years away, so special relativity says that infomation couldn't of traveled from one side of it to the other, so there is no way for it to be uniform. I don't see any link to the universe spining.

If anything the CMB proves that the earth is spining, if the earth was stationary the CMB would have to be routating around the earth instead, but because the CMB comes from 13 billion light years away it would be moving around a circle of 30 billion light years every day.

I've heard of it. I have no idea how it could possibly be tied to the rotation of the Earth.
There are a lot of possible explanations. Coincidence is entirely possible, as is different laws of physics holding on huge scales (like how quantim physics only hold on small). Plus it would be  explained by the existence of other universes: a point where ours 'collided' with another.
Link.

The only place I can see any mention of Copernicus would be here, and it's little more than a coincidence of shape. Skip to the end for the mention: the idea is that part of the structure resembles the orbit of the Earth around the Sun. That's probably meaningless: with all the map and all the things any aspect of it could show, mixed in with all the areas of science something like that would be possible...
However, if it is meaningful, it could only be so if the Earth does indeed rotate. Krauss mentions, light-heartedly, that this would make the Earth the figurative centre of the universe. You might have seen and misinterpreted the quote.

Misrepresented the quote? yeah thats probably what i must have done, my bad, thing is i didn't ask if id described the axis of evil correctly, i asked if anyone had heard about it, i wasn't really after a discussion thats why i posted it in Q&A, i only asked empirical his views on the implications of the axis of evil  on the Copernican principle because i was sure he didn't have any when all i really wanted to know was had he heard about it but i deduced he had not when he asked for a link. that will teach me to post questions in  Q&A.

It would have  been a shame to let a thread go waste but at least now its been moved to General everyone else who's never heard of the axis of evil can explain why it must be wrong then ask for a link.

I didn't say it must be wrong, I just said I couldn't see any connection between the CMB and the rotation of the planet.

So the CMB is more varied in one section of space than the rest. It is interesting, but I still don't see the link to the planets rotation.

There isn't, Delux has already said they were just misremembering a Krauss quote:

But when you look at CMB map, you also see that the structure that is observed, is in fact, in a weird way, correlated with the plane of the earth around the sun. Is this Copernicus coming back to haunt us? That's crazy. We're looking out at the whole universe. There's no way there should be a correlation of structure with our motion of the earth around the sun — the plane of the earth around the sun — the ecliptic. That would say we are truly the center of the universe.

I haven't heard of the "axis of evil"  but I have read the Smoot book on COBE,  and how they detected the movement of the earth from the doppler shift in the CMB.

If you are interested in the absolute movement of earth measured relative to the CMB you can look it up,   it's called the dipole anisotropy.

Stop gilding the pickle, you demisexual aromantic homoflexible snowflake.
