Are most Flat Earthers Christians?
« on: July 26, 2015, 02:56:16 PM »
I am trying to understand why someone would believe that the earth is flat in this day and age.  Is it from a bible passage?

They are mostly trolling, but the series ones are here to make themselves feel special.
The only real religious nut here is iWitness.

No.  I think most of us are athieets or agnostic.  But what difference does ones religion make when analyzing the facts?

I can pretty much guarantee most Christians are not flat earthers.
I'm no rocket scientist, but at least I know the Earth is round, Man went to the Moon, and air exists.

Ok -  still trying to understand why anyone, Christian or Athiest would believe in this so-called theory.  If this is true, that the earth is indeed flat, then why the cover-up?  Why would would governments and agencies such as NASA what to hide a flat earth theory?  Does not make any sense.

We've been saying that for a long time.

Sorry mate, from the US.

I am not sure how many of you here can verify through personal evidence of a round earth but I sure can.  At least I would say I qualify as a witness to a round earth.  Here is my qualification:

1.  I was a KC-135R flight crewmember in the Air Force for 9 years.  During this time period, I have flown up to 49,900 feet.  The reason why we did not fly any higher was due to FAA flight regs which prohibits any aircraft to fly higher than 50K feet without proper pressured suits or cabins.  At this altitude, 49K, not only is the sky darker (less blue and more black) but you can clearly see the curvature of the earth.  You just can't see it as well when flying at 35k like most airlines fly at.

NASA owns a KC-135T model named "vomet comet" which is padded with protective material for gravitity testing.  They used to fly astronauts and configure the aircraft to experience "zero Gs".  I was fortunate to fly two mission where I experienced "zero Gs" for 20-30 seconds.  I literally did flips in the back of the aircraft.  Yes Gravity is real.

2.  In my previous job, I worked for the Missile Defense Agency where I watched from a command center a kill vehicle which launched from a rocket and flew along the stratosphere until it disintegrated - not by design but due to vehicle traveling about 17.5K miles per hour.  Yes the earth does rotate that fast.

3.  I currently work for NASA, in the human space flight division.  I have witness 4 Soyuz rocket launches go into space carring Russian and US astronauts.  I have also worked with a Canadian company called Urthecast helping them technically with a live camera mounted on the ISS.  You can see live pictures 24 hours a day through Urthecast.  Plus, nasa.gov and NASA TV shows live pictures of the ISS and earth daily.   Yes, you can clearly see a round earth

I thought 911 deniers where insane but to believe the earth is flat just boggles the mind.

So what are you here for?
You appear to know the truth from your own eyes so why are you here?
Are you here to understand why people believe in a flat Earth, from which you can easily get answers to from the many topics posted over the years.
Or
Are you here to basically add to the attempted ridicule and intimidation techniques employed by like-minded people?

If you want my input on you, I'd say you're doing your global friends a bad turn by spewing what you're spewing.
I've flown to 49,000 feet in the same craft as you and saw the Earth as flat.
I've witnessed rockets go into the air and land in the ocean which were supposed to be going into space. I witnessed 5 of these.

Am I telling lies?

The only reason why I came to this forum was due to my brother-n-law.  He's a Christian and told me if I ever heard of the flat earth theory.  He said it was based on a biblical passages (4 corners of the earth).  Well now I see that there is athesist who also believe in this.  Not sure why, but ok.

Now about my qualification - sure I could be lying but why would like make up something so shallow, I mean I should have said I was a U-2 pilot who flew 90,000 feet up and saw the moon up close or I should said I was one of the Apollo astronants who flew 4 Saturn mission.  Funny, my username I chose is "boomer".  Wonder why?  Because I was a boom operator on a KC-135 tanker aircraft.  As for working for NASA, I am going to do something unique.  Next month I will be flying down to Baikonur, Kazkhstan to see the next Soyuz rocket launch who will be carrying 3 astronants to the ISS.  I'll get a chance to come within 25 feet of the rocket a few days before it launches.  I am going to hold up a sign that says "round earth" with the Russian Soyuz rocket in the background.   So look for my post in about 5 weeks.

Would you be able to set up a camera that films uncut footage beginning with the astronauts entering the rocket until launch and the rocket disappearing in the sky. Most flat earthers say that public launch events uses miniature rockets and deny the scale to the rest of the environment and the crew entering. This would prove to them that the launches are not faked.

I think it would be easier to set up a camera near the launches and then later review the video, set up the scales and calculate the acceleration of the rocket to see if they reach space.

He probably doesn't want your input on him, but, nah... no worries, scepti. He's fine. Spewing is what you do.

It seems to me he's sharing his own observations (that's very Zetetic, remember?)

Uh huh.  ::)

boomer, if you've lurked here much you're probably familiar with our friend and prolific poser poster sceptimatic. We can add these empty claims to "I spent six months in Antarctica" (which he then spent pages and pages denying he said) and "I have 13 academic credentials" (which he tries to deny he said). Then there are the money, cars, houses, cameras, models, and laser experiments, too.

Quote
Am I telling lies?
Most likely.

Anyway, back to boomer's original question, several proponents of the flat-earth idea cite biblical passages as reasons for their claims, but by no means all of them. It seems likely that many, if not most, of the non-biblical pro-flat-earth posters are involved just as an exercise in "what if" and don't really believe it. Some, however, really do seem to think they're on to something that nearly everyone else in the world has missed, which makes them feel smarter than the average bear. It takes all kinds to make a world.

Awesome! Expect comments like the standard "obviously fake" after you post it.

Nothing will "prove" the launches are not faked to people whose attitude is "my mind is made up, don't confuse me with the facts." They'll claim the whole video was created in Photoshop(!) or something.

Unfortunately no.  The astronauts are in quarantine two weeks before the launch, so they do not bring any sickness to other astronauts on the ISS.  The immediate families of the astronauts are allowed to see them leading up to the launch and on launch day.  The only time I get to see them is during the fairwell ceremony just before they ride the bus to the rocket.  Even then I can only get 20 feet away.  As for the launch, I am with the astronauts families.  The pad is 7/10 of a mile away, enough to feel the vibration and the power of the rocket lifting off.  Pretty amazing!  Right after the launch, we watch a video feed of the ISS, which we can see the approaching vehicle (space capsule) coming to dock on the ISS.  Once the hatch is open, we allow the astrsnants and families to talk, which is quite unique as there is about a 5 second delay and an echo.  For someone to think that this is all fake is out of their minds.  We have proven we had made it to space and to the moon.  If this was all fake, why are we still doing it?  Doesn't make any sense for one to fake something for so long.  Look how big NASA is - go to one of their centers.  Why waste 18 billion dollars an all this effort each year to fool the world.

I am trying to understand why someone would believe that the earth is flat in this day and age.  Is it from a bible passage?

There was a similar question I asked sometime back but to no answer from Flat earthers. It went like ... If A be the set of all Flat earthers and B be the set of all Theists.

Is A a proper subset of B ?          ( No distinction done for agnostic and gnostic in the definition of B )

Disregarding the dome, the essential flatness of the earth's surface is required by verses like Daniel 4:10-11. In Daniel, the king “saw a tree of great height at the centre of the earth...reaching with its top to the sky and visible to the earth's farthest bounds.” If the earth were flat, a sufficiently tall tree would be visible to “the earth's farthest bounds,” but this is impossible on a spherical earth. Likewise, in describing the temptation of Jesus by Satan, Matthew 4:8 says, “Once again, the devil took him to a very high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world [cosmos] in their glory.” Obviously, this would be possible only if the earth were flat. The same is true of Revelation 1:7: “Behold, he is coming with the clouds! Every eye shall see him...”

https://www.lhup.edu/~dsimanek/febible.htm

I also find it humorous that this view of the flat Earth disagrees with the Flat Earth Society explanation of horizons, since they have yet to find a sufficiently high mountain that can see all the Earth, but instead claim that light disperses in the atmosphere after a certain distance, creating a horizon (which couldn't possibly be explained by the Earth's curvature).

First off tappet has no clue about what he is saying.  The OP said he has read the bible and wanted to know the verse or verses that may contain flat Earth and said in the Hebrew version it doesn't say this.  I am sure a sane person would understand that he is asking for a verse from one of the religious minded FE supporters so he could verify what that verse says in the older version.

As for the bible, if you take every word literally, you will find that it is completely full of contradictions.  If you read it as a whole then you can see the overall message will not be contradictory.  Many people have an issue that they cannot take things as a whole, they like to nitpick small things.  Much like the FE supporters cannot fathom things like one set of observed effects that could be explained by different initiators, i.e. the horizon, yet when you look at other things they match up together.  The puzzle pieces are all there and we show you how they fit together nicely, yet FE guys want to stare at each piece individually and ignore the others.  I think its a cannot see the forest for the tress type thing there.

Sorry, not from Oklahoma.

The fight song of Oklahoma University is "Boomer Sooner."
Stick close , very close , to your P.C.and never go to sea
And you all may be Rulers of The Flat Earth Society

Look out your window , see what you shall see
And you all may be Rulers of The Flat Earth Society

Chorus:
Yes ! Never, never, never,  ever go to sea !

I think it would be safe to say that most Christians are not Flat Earthers.

That is in no way even close to the topic, retard.  Why would you even post that, much less double post for no apparent reason?
