Confederate Flag in the Mississippi State flag

Vote and leave any comments here. I voted Yeeha! Its a part of history. The Civil War was about A LOT more than slavery, like States Rights, and the ability of a State to challenge unconstitutional power grabs by the Federal Government.  Slavery would have ultimately ended anyway. It was an impractical institution that held the South back, and most sensible Southerners knew that. As far as States Rights, one only has to see what the power-hungry Federal Government has managed to do, trampling all over the rights of the States in its quest for domination. Its a bloody disgrace.

Obama has been the worst in that regard, but Bush II wasn't much better. No State is safe from these power-hungry bastards.

EDIT:

Slight Orthographic correction to the poll. My apologies. The voting tally remains unchanged.

I find americans quite amusing in their state system.
I find that people identify sometimes more with being Texans, Californians or New Yorkers than they identify as Americans.
As an Australian, with our quite different state system, i find this quite interesting.

You say that the federal government is trampling all over the rights of the states.
But if I'm not mistaken, wasn't the whole point of the federal government to represent the States?

I cant remember any instances of the Washington government "trampling" on the rights of States.
They started the Civil war because South Carolina et. al. seceded and attacked Fort Sumter, did they not?

Sorry, my american history isn't great.
They are taking the hobbits to Isengard.

Well, as an Australian, I think that is the whole point. You don't quite get that our State system is designed originally to be like many small countries represented by a large, weak central government. In fact, under the Articles of Confederation that governed this country prior to the Constitution, the Central Government was kept VERY weak, so weak that indeed it could not function. It was deemed that something stronger was needed. The only problem is that how the Constitution has been interpreted has been totally to the abnegation of States Rights. And yes, most of us do identify more with our States than we do with the National Government.

And, EJ not withstanding, Lincoln was not looking to treat Negroes equally. In fact, he wanted to send all freed Negroes back to Africa.

But most people can't even tell you who was President at a certain time early in American history, because the offic was so much less relevant, because so much was don't at the Statehouse, before the National Government started taking all power from the States. I'm hoping that eventually that power will be returned, peacefully, of course.

Well, of course its immoral! But even by an economic standard is what I'm saying. Even if you were inclined, as some white slave owners were, to overlook the moral question, or to attempt to justify it on dubious appeals to the Bible or other moral appeals (the White Man's Burden, and that kind of crap), the system still could not be maintained, purely from an economic point of view.

Look, no one here, least of all me, is going to attempt to morally justify any kind of slavery, colour-based or otherwise. For that matter, even many slave owners themselves recognised the rank immorality of the institution. Washington freed all his slaves at his death, although that did not include his wife's slaves, because they were not his to free, but rather hers, given how property rights were looked at at the time in Virginia.

Slavery is a disgusting, filthy practice, whether its based on colour or anything else. And it should be noted, ANYTHING ELSE. Africans held each other as slaves LONG before Europeans ever got involved in the mess. People seem to forget that the first slaves that Europeans brought to America (and Europe itself) from Africa had been bought and paid for by Europeans from Africans. Africans who had defeated other Africans in war, captured those other Africans, and made slaves of them, and then sold them to others, including Europeans. The whole colour question didn't come up for about a century.

According to who's moral standards?  Slavery, in one form or another, has been around in many (if not most) cultures just about forever.  I think that if slaves are treated well enough, then the moral argument against slavery becomes a little tougher.

Yeah in a few towns there is such a large Pakistani population, it was seen as representative to fly that flag.

Not that much tougher though. Most of the reasons why people were enslaved were arbitrary. Even "free labor" isn't a good argument, because then why do these people have to do it for the rest of their lives? Why not have a community service system?

Actually, only four (later five) Union states allowed slavery.
Missouri, Kentucky, Maryland, Delaware and what would become West Virginia.

Northern states did have slaves, but only in the above five was it practiced at the time of the Civil War.

But Yaakov, isn't it better for the state as a whole to have a strong central government?

There I voted, Being from Mississippi, I figured my vote should be in there.  I am however not going to divulge which one I picked.  This issue was brought up several years ago and was voted down by the state's population, from all races living there.
There is a problem brewing in this country in the form of actual racism, people being overly sensitive to things that have nothing to do with race yet they want to claim it does, some who want to just bury their heads in the sand and hope it goes away, and those who are profiting off of the excited race relations.  The odd thing is that Mississippi, which is seen by others as teh most racist state in the union, is not.  There is much more harmony between the races in Mississippi and in the south than i normally see in other areas of the country.  The ones who like to claim everything is racist and the ones who actually say and do racist things are not really what you find in the South.  Southerners are more heavily mixed, population wise, than other states.  We have had to learn over time to respect each other and work together.  The same guy yu talked to at the store the other day is the same guy you will see tomorrow.  A person is a person and they should only be judged on what they personally do, not their ethnic background or any other superficial differences from you.  Their actions are the only thing that should ever have them treated any differently.
