How do North South magnets work?

So basically the question explains itself. But I was wondering this because it would make sense that the earth would be round sense earth has "in a round-earth mind" a north and south pole.

Are you claiming that magnets would not work on a flat Earth?  I don't follow you.  Perhaps you could explain?
