a lot is understood about gravity? ok, would you care to explain something as basic as what it is. 'a force that attracts mass to mass'. how? we understand friction in terms of catching, heat in terms of movement, if gravity's so well understood could you please explain something as basic as that? or maybe it is something else entirely.

Also, crossing the equator is NOT an argument for aether. That's about as logical as saying "I blink my eyes, this is evidence that rocks are sentient.".
