Mars One - The Latest Scam?
« on: March 20, 2015, 09:56:53 AM »
I'm sure most members have seen the allegations about Mars One being a scam:

http://metro.co.uk/2015/03/18/is-the-mars-one-mission-the-biggest-hoax-in-history-5109527/

http://www.mars-one.com/about-mars-one/team/bas-lansdorp:

Quote
Bas Lansdorp has never been one to let bold ventures intimidate him. A born entrepreneur, he sees potential and opportunity where others shy away. Gifted with an articulate vision and genuine enthusiasm, he moves people with his passion for science and the human mission to Mars.

Lansdorp received his Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Twente University in 2003. For five years Lansdorp worked at Delft University of Technology and in 2008 founded Ampyx Power in order to develop a new, viable method of generating wind energy. Lansdorp sold his majority interest in Ampyx in 2011 in order to launch Mars One, Lansdorp's dream for many years.

“Since we started Mars One in March 2011, we received support from scientists, engineers, businessmen and –women and aeropace companies from all over the world. The announcement of our plan in May 2012 resulted in the engagement of the general public, and the support from sponsors and investors. To see our mission evolve this way feels like my dream is becoming a reality."

Could there be other scams regarding space exploration, or is this the only one?

Fully agree, hoppy. I wonder what the believers make of this, though. They probably just want to ignore it. Once one "mission" is suggested (and hopefully proved) to be a scam, they might consider if other "missions" could have been scammed. We will see, eh?

No, none of those were scams because they happened. Mars One is a project which hasn't happened yet, no different to the FE Antarctic Expedition, which is also an obvious scam.

Here is another one I'm calling out as being a scam:

http://www.lunarmissionone.com/

Quote
Welcome to Lunar Mission One, the most inspirational Moon project since the Apollo landings. The Mission will be delivered by Lunar Missions Ltd and is supported by some of the most prominent bodies and institutions in science, education and space, including technical advisors, RAL Space (who were most recently involved in developing instrumentation for the Rosetta Philae Lander).

They'll start coming thick and fast over the next few years.

Believers: They need your money. Give as much as you can!

Why do you think it's a scam?  Try to base your answer on evidence, rather than sneering.  Go on, I know you can do it!

Here is another one I'm calling out as being a scam:

http://www.lunarmissionone.com/

Why do you think it's a scam?  Try to base your answer on evidence, rather than sneering.  Go on, I know you can do it!

http://launch.lunarmissionone.com/index.php/lunar-mission-one/introduction:

Quote
Lunar Mission One has three main aims

1.    To use pioneering robotic technology to significantly further our understanding of the origins and evolution of the Moon and the Earth, and to pave the way for future lunar missions
2.    To launch a global education project to inspire a new generation of children and young people around the world to get excited about space, science, engineering and technology
3.    To create a comprehensive record of the history of humankind and the biosphere of the Earth

1. Pioneering robotic technology? Tell me more:
Quote
The mission will use pioneering technology to drill down to a depth of at least 20m – 10 times deeper than has ever been drilled before – and potentially as deep as 100m. By doing this, we will access lunar rock dating back up to 4.5 billion years to discover the geological composition of the Moon, the ancient relationship it shares with our planet and the effects of asteroid bombardment. Ultimately, the project will improve scientific understanding of the early solar system, the formation of our planet and the Moon, and the conditions that initiated life on Earth.

Do they have any evidence of this "pioneering technology"? A demonstration on Earth would be suitable. Or is that just scientific sounding marketing? They seem to have no idea what depth they will be able to drill, either. I wonder why.

2. Global Indoctrination.

3. What complete bollocks! From drilling a few holes?

Will that do crab?

What do you believers in all these space adventures have to say to this:

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/7.872510-Mars-One-Finalist-Its-All-a-Scam:

Quote
I've often said. before they can build a base on the moon, they need to build a self-sustaining colony on the ocean floor. At least a thousand feet down. Yeah I know space and the ocean are two fairly different environments but the methods and problems are comprable. You have to creat a sealed, air tight, pressurized enclosure capoable of withstanding a variety of stresses. Find a way to generate, store and recycle oxygen water and food for the long term, and keep people from going batshit insane for the same period.

It'll be cheaper, easier and less harmful than trying to develop the techniques in space.. for starters there's a whole slew of problems caused be low-micro gravity. Weakening of the bones, heart, muscles and blood vessels for starters.. Then there's the bacteria. Yeah apparently in low gravity, Virii fungi and bacteria basically go super saiyan.. while the human immune system conversely gets a little weaker.

I fully agree with this post. So, why has it never been done???

Edit: I quoted verbatim so there are grammatical, spelling, and other errors.

No, I said with evidence.  All you've done is your usual sneering argument from incredulity.

Even if their plans aren't realistic that doesn't show a scam - for that you must demonstrate is that they are taking money ostensibly for one thing, and using it for another.  If they take money for sending a robotic mission to the moon and spend it on holidays in the Cayman Isles that would be a scam - you haven't demonstrated any such thing.

I'll keep open minded for the time being.

Pretty obvious - because nobody has ever done it before.

You are the ones posting this thread saying that these people are feeble minded.  Yet where is your evidence?  I made an argument that the ones you specifically mentioned in this thread are most likely not feeble minded since they have jobs that require them to actually think.

So do you have any sort of argument other than from incredulity?
Because basically your argument boils down to
"I don't think space travel is possible, therefore, this must be a scam"

When people raise money they do something right? They're like "hey will you pledge ten dollars for every mile I run to donate to cancer research?" They're not like hey will you pledge money for me to research cancer on my computer? Or pledge money for every hour I sit at home.

This is a big challenge. Do people want to contribute millions of dollars for people to go live on the bottom of the ocean? No. That's a waste and a stupid idea.

Do people want to contribute money for the first planetary pioneers in history? Yes, that sounds really cool.
