Absolute Proof the Earth Rotates

In Griffith Park Observatory in Los Angeles, they have a pendulum exhibit in front. You can see the pendulum appear to slowly go in a circle because the Earth beneath it rotates. I went there, I saw it with my own 2 eyes. Not only that, but they have massive telescopes you can look through daily where you can see planets, stars and the moon.
"Free public telescopes are available each evening the Observatory is open and skies are clear. Knowledgeable telescope demonstrators are available to guide visitors in observing. "

I recommend you visit and look through the telescopes yourself.

Here is a video of the pendulum that clearly without a shadow of a doubt, demonstrates that the Earth rotates in a circle every 24 hours, everyday. I saw it when I first walked in. Then came back 2 hours later to see how the Earth rotated slightly and the pendulum was moved over. It moves over exactly perfectly to the same spot every day for 24 hour cycles. You see, this is not propaganda or brainwashing, this is called evidence!

Great example. Lets hope that can understand this: The pendulum will not change direction because it there is no force around it to do so. It works like a gyro. The display is rotating with the earth. It will rotated 15 degrees per hour.

Good, solid evidence. I want to hear the response of FE's.

Also if they don't trust this, they can do the experiment at home. Draw a type of sun dial on paper, hang a pendulum over it that swings without being forced, and come back every hour and see how the Earth rotates. As far as I understand, Flat Earthers all believe the Earth does not move. This blows that theory to pieces. I've also posted 2 videos of eclipses that seems to not make sense with their Flat Earth model as well. We just need to find a very easy simple way to demonstrate how the world is a sphere to them.

Foucalts Pendulum. Unfortunately it's already been posted here. And guess what? Many pages of flat earth drivel later it still wasn't accepted (read: understood).

Pendulums swing for a while and then stop.  What keeps this one swinging for ever?

Haha right away you call it fake right? You see what you do? Instead of learning anything and allowing your views to change and grow as a person, you search for the conspiracy and trickery. You cut yourself off from learning because all you see is someone trying to trick you. A pendulum that size will keep swinging. Why don't you try and understand what it is showing and how it works?

"some Foucault pendulums in museums incorporate an electromagnetic or other drive to keep the bob swinging; others are restarted regularly, sometimes with a launching ceremony as an added attraction."

Here is one in Paris:

California Academy of Sciences:

"The introduction of the Foucault pendulum in 1851 was the first simple proof of the rotation in an easy-to-see experiment. Today, Foucault pendulums are popular displays in science museums and universities."

Yet in 2014 you guys do not believe the Earth is a sphere and rotates.

"There are numerous Foucault pendulums around the world, mainly at universities, science museums and planetariums. The United Nations headquarters in New York City has one, while the largest Foucault pendulum in the world, Principia, is housed at the Oregon Convention Center."

Here you go:

"The 240-pound brass ball, suspended by a cable 40 feet long, swings in a constant direction while the Earth turns beneath it. The pendulum is mounted to a bearing in the rotunda ceiling that does not turn with the building as it rotates with the Earth. A ring magnet at the bearing gives a little tug on each swing of the pendulum to keep the pendulum in motion. As the day passes, the pendulum knocks over pegs set up in the pendulum pit and indicates the progress of rotation."

It is ok to admit you were wrong and to open your mind to learning facts.

So, they use electromagnets to make the pendulum swing continuously?  Couldn't these electromagnets also make it rotate ever so lightly?

Um... for what purpose? Let me guess: to perpetuate the lie that the earth is a sphere that rotates? Yep, makes perfect sense.

And your explanation for the pendulums that do not use electromagnets but also demonstrate the rotation of the earth is...? There are literally thousands of such examples, yet they all seem to rotate relative to the earth.

Try it for yourself and make your own pendulum. No electromagnets required.

From the description jer9999 cited, no, the electromagnets would not provide any torque to cause rotation.

What about pendulums swinging without electromagnetic assistance? They rotate too.

How long can a pendulum swing without an external force acting upon it?  Probably not very long.

Re: Absolute Proof the Earth Rotates

You can look up and see there is no motor and nothing is turning it. There is a berring that doesn't move with the building. This has been going on since 1851. The magnet only gives a slight push out and has nothing to do with it's turn. You can still probably do this at home, even if it doesn't last a whole day, if you can get it to swing for about 2 hours you can see how it rotates. If you are creative, you can find a way to have it swing a whole day and see. Why don't you make this at home and then you can finally get off this website and move on with your life back in the real world where we live on a spherical planet.

Do you accept JROA that this is proof the Earth rotates in a circle?

Here's one at the University of New South Wales (located in Sydney, Australia):

The Foucault pendulum

Quote
The Foucault Pendulum at the School of Physics of The University of New South Wales is a "hands-on" version. There is no electromagnetic drive but, because of its size once it is started it will swing for several hours.

edit: Just thought I should add that this one precesses about 9 per hour (for those too lazy to go an read the page themselves ;) ).

So one of you Flat Earthers can go there and swing it yourself then report to the rest of you that it does indeed show the Earth rotates.

"Visitors are invited to start it swinging in a plane that is accurately defined by a fixed vertical wire and a vertical line on the wall. (The pendulum takes seven minutes to precess one degree, but even smaller angles than this can be seen by sighting along the reference plane."

Also you can make one at home and look every 7 minutes to see it moved 1 degree. If you are spending your whole life on this Flat Earth theory, why not take that time and do this and you will then have your answer that the Flat Earth theory is not accuate?

I have already seen one of those pendulums at a museum I visited several years ago.  I stood there and watched it swing and never once did I see it rotate.

All of them at every museum demonstrates it rotates. What are you talking about? I looked at it, then went back 2 hours later and saw where it was swinging had moved. People have observed this since 1851 but amazingly it didn't demonstrate this only for you?

You can't just throw everything out. EVERYONE Can see it rotates. It goes 1 degree every 7 minutes. EVERYBODY CAN SEE THIS! It was too boring for you so you may as well just throw your hands up and accept the Earth is stable and does not rotate?

So basically no proof will be good enough for you as you say you won't reading posts or explanations and you won't take the time to understand anything because i is too boring for you?

So Flat Earth is somehow a convenience for you? It just makes it easier for you to handle for some reason?

How long would "a while" have been in this instance? And where was the pendulum located (latitude will do)?

Jer9999, I should point out that only pendulums at the same latitude as Sydney will rotate 1 per 7 minutes. The period of rotation is latitude dependent, and can be determined by dividing 23.9hrs by the sine of the latitude at which the pendulum is located. This will give the time for one full rotation. For example, at 20 latitude (North or South doesn't matter, that only affects which way it rotates, not how quickly) a pendulum will complete one rotation in 23.9/sine(20) = ~59hrs. At 50 latitude, it would be 31.2hrs.

Why does the pendulum have to swing if it's the Earth rotating under it? What is the purpose of the swing? Is it just to show that the circle under it changes movement?

There can be no other reason. Anyone want to answer this because I have a nice big question.

WOW! You guys never cease to astound me.

If the pendulum did not swing how could we measure it? By swinging it goes over marks on the side, as the Earth rotates, it keeps swinging the same way but the Earth moves, not the pendulum. So as the Earth moves it will hit different markers and this cycle will repeat every 24 hours or so depending where it is on the Earth. This is absolute proof the Earth rotates!

The pendulum needs to be moving relative to the earth in order to show the movement of the earth. If it were just hanging there, it would be moving with the earth, but not relative to it. The reason for this is that the Coriolis force is what makes the pendulum rotate, and the Coriolis force only affects something that is moving relative to the earth.

I just posted a number of posts with evidence not only why but how we know the Earth is round and how the Flat Earth theories make no sense. Still, they will continue to throw it all out and devote their lives to an idea that has ZERO evidence supporting it. They are not here to learn, they are here to promote their agenda and have no interest in understanding anything. They have made up their minds.
