RESOLVED: Forum VERY sluggish

Over the last couple of days the forum has become extremely sluggish.... sometimes taking 30 or more seconds just to load a thread..

Ive tested our internet connection, speeds are good, I'm using a brand new install on my laptop so I doubt it's at my end.. or at least I hope not.. anyway, all other sites are working as they normally do.

What OS and browser do you use?

Win 7 and Chrome, but also Explorer - both are running slow

It seems to be intermittent though...

Maybe it will clear itself...

Sometimes the server gets bogged down with all of the lurkers.  I don't seem to be having the same issues.

Do you have something running in the background?  Maybe a Chrome Extension or something that might be hogging your bandwidth?

Also, a speed test only shows you the burst speed, not the sustained speed. 

The forum was slow for me yesterday afternoon, but seems to be fine at the moment.

I'm running Windows 8 and AOL but haven't noticed any problems. Since I updated to Windows 8 if any thing it seems the response time has improved. Also just upgraded to a new laptop and it seems much faster on all things .

I just went back from win 8.1 to win 7 a couple of days ago..

I hated win 8!

It has some nice features, but overall what a wank.. especially for a laptop.. maybe its ok for a tablet..

The forum is now hanging for me as well.  Too bad Danial will not let technically proficient people try to troubleshoot the problem.

As to scepti I am assuming you are making the brash assumption that he has brain cells ?

There are 175 guests viewing the forum, earlier there were even more. That could be part of the problem.

Most of them are not real people. If they don't block them the problem will still be there.

Sorry, I have been using up all the bandwidth by uploading my porn.  I will stop so you people can read threads for a while.

How do you suggest the forum block them? They're not registered, and it's not a good idea to ban IP ranges.

Limit to what they can read on the site. If they want to read more they will have to register.

Guests are already limited to what they can read.  However, they still have access to 75% of the forums. 

It would not matter, though, if we limited them even more.  If they are going to read posts for 3 hours, it does not matter to them if they only have access to 3 of the sub-forums.  Guests like reading old posts.  Look at who is online and you will see that guests like to read posts that 4 or more years old.  They hardly read the new stuff.

Either way it is too much of something or not enough of something else. Slow is slow no matter how you explain it.

Seems to be running much faster today. 

I just had a couple of 504 Gateway errors, the same as it was doing to me yesterday when it was slow.  However, it has been quickerthis morning.
