Mum, girl friend and two sisters, all hard to buy for.

Clothes are a no no (I can guarantee I'll get it wrong, I've been moaned at many many times)

Perfume (same reason as above)

Jewelry (see above)

Things for hobbies (They don't have any. I bought an easel for my girl friend a few years ago, it's still in the loft unused)

Asking other girls for advice (I did this once and bought some smelly bath things. They've never been used and I got moaned at)

Asking what they want and trying to get some hints from them (They don't even know what they want so how the hell should I know?)

Seriously it's a bloody nightmare

Girlfriend - Take her somewhere romantic. that's investing both your time and money.
Sisters - Send them to me.
Mother-  Send her to Markjo.

A very merry christmas will be had by all.

Surprising other people isn't. Thankfully my family has adopted a policy to not buy gifts for each other on Christmas, as it makes the whole ordeal significantly less terrible.
Super Blanko. I made an agreement with my family when I was about 11-12 that basically dealt with all random social shit that annoyed me, for example:
  • I'm not obliged to remember their birthdays/namedays, they're not obliged to remember mine.
  • Gifts are never obligatory or expected, and they usually have little to do with special occasions.
  • Money is an acceptable (and often default) gift.
Seriously, I don't feel like I'm missing out on any fun. If I find something hilarious/useful I want to give someone, I'll just get it for them the moment I see it. Why wait? Why force myself to think of something appropriate for <day x>?

Some people should stop being scrooges!!

My gf isn't that hard to buy for, I don't get an ear full if it's not quite right. My Mum on the other hand is a nightmare.

Buying a dvd tv series thing was a good idea. I think I might buy my mum a true ghost stories dvd, she likes that kind of stuff, but I know what she'll say "What did you get me that for, I can see it on TV when it comes out!"

My sisters and mum would eat you both alive. You wouldn't have a chance.

I'm terrible at buying gifts for people. I usually resort to chocolate or booze.

White goods are always a win. I have bought my girlfriend quite a few kitchen appliances, she grumbles at first, but I know she is gonna use it a lot and get the most out of it.

lol @ Squevil's kitchen joke.

Also, I thought my family was pretty meh about holdays and birthdays until I read PPlanet's post.  If we don't get clothes for each other, then it's straight up money, or the occasional gift card.  Birthdays are pretty played down at my house.

Nah I don't believe in marriage. A child and mortgage is a binding contract :)

I try and get good gifts. I have actually bought Eva kitching appliances before but I would get her shoes or something too. I bought her a washing machine and a juicer in the past. Last year I got her a coffee machine too.
Perfume is a safe option though but depends on the ladies tastes. If its somebody you are close too massage credits go a long way along with a foot rub. Or a spa day if your budget is good.

Nothing wrong with that.  As they say, candy is dandy but liquor is quicker.
Then again, there's no reason that you can't do both at once:

Girls are easy.  Just find out what they're obsessed with (ie turtles, they all have something stupid they're obsessed with, and get them something to do with that.

Gift giving also involves a certain amount of empathy and thoughtfulness.  Two things that a lot of guys aren't necessarily known for.

Damn, you should win an award in the gift giving arts.
