NASA Engages the Public to Discover New Uses for Out-of-this-World Technologies

What do you make of this? NASA's sharing its patents and capabilities with the public to generate new ideas.

Publicity stunt? Ways to generate income? Ways to further the public thought that NASA are all-powerful and we are lowly minions?

If NASA specializes in photo manipulation and isn't as capable as they claim, then where did all these patents come from? Are they just made up?

what is NASA capable of? What claims are outright lies?

Here is an article where you will find informative links

well i think that depends on what you think nasa is, if you think nasa is not a giant monster conspiracy churning out machine like me I think its rather a cool idea, crowdsourcing can have amazing results in the way certain technologies develop

The telescopes NASA runs at educational institutions are presumably legit. The one patent they demonstrated in the link is related to image stabilization technology in telescopes to study solar flares.

They are only releasing 40 patents to the public. Surely the world's leading space agency, creator of many propulsion technologies, communication technologies, life support technologies, robotics technologies, with space ships which have sent men to the moon and robots to mars would have more than 40 patents.

Your opinion depends on my opinion?

Yes, Tom, some sources I found say more than 6000 patents. Is that what your point was? That an organization as capable as they claim should be more inventive than 40 patents?

I'm not sure I like NASA's patent methods. They get funding from tax-payers and then sometimes they auction off their patents? What would they worry about if their patents were in the public domain?

Perhaps this is their solution to that, idk.

I'm not trying to be an ass but I realize it comes off that way. Sometimes I take things very literally and overlook the data when it is fluffed with other stuff that doesn't make sense to me.  I do understand that people's opinions will differ depending on how they view NASA. That's why I made this thread. Everyone views NASA differently so I was looking for opinions on what this means to the members of this forum.

Anyway, when you used 'you' as in a general you I thought you meant me.

Please forgive me and this post was just me trying to explain my last post.

Called a return on investment.  A sale is money for the government, which is owned by the people.  So its like holding stock in a company and having that company be successful.

Oh! I see how that could be ambiguous now, my bad haha, yeah I didn't mean you as in you but you in the general sense

Well, yes, their website clearly specifies you need to buy a licence for their stuff. Perhaps NASA is trying to become the new big patent troll.

Seems like the same ploy that's been played all along, only this time they are making it public to spread the word to would be scientists to put all their time, effort and money into something ground breaking, to have it stolen off of them, masked as an invention that didn't improve on one that they miraculously invented beforehand and blah blah blah.

NASA is always hiding something or molding something to fit into their machinations. I used to be starry-eyed about them, but after working alongside them I can't help but distrust their motives and their methods.
Discovery has always been second on the agenda to making money for them.

I could patent a comb for snakes. It wouldn't be very useful. I suspect NASA know this about their own patents.

They even said they are releasing them to the public to generate ideas. In other words NASA can't think of anything. These technologies are useless. NASA, in their rush to be patent trolls, patent things things that are totally worthless just in case someone else finds them useful.

The Patent and Trademark Office is supposed to weed out crap patents that won't be any good, and they're notorious for doing an extremely thorough job.  If what you're saying is true, they're almost certainly in on it.

I hope that you're being sarcastic because the patent office is so overwhelmed and understaffed that a lot of nonsense patents slip through.

On the contrary, the few examples of silly patents that are commonly circulated are notable precisely because they usually get rejected.  If one organization is registering thousands of garbage patents, it's quite likely that we're dealing with corruption in the PTO.

Maybe because they don't want the technology to launch ICBMs in the hands of your everyday citizen.  Did you ever think of that?

Based on the article, we would be overrun with average citizens with the technology to:

This is truly devastating news.
